  • To everyone

    2008-01-10 13:50:34

Hi there! Long time no see, and what’s up? Many new friends here, and I say,”hello, how are you?” But you guys can NOT say,”Fine, thank you, and you?” Why? Do you know? Who can tell me? Because that is a question, and it has many answers. If you failed your exam, you could respond, ”Too bad” or “Unlucky,” because that IS how you ARE.

Today I’ll introduce an English Grammar website to you, which is very good. The address is: http://dailygrammar.com/index.shtml” - You can click “Lesson Archive” on the left, and study from the beginning. If you want to spend a little time on it and not give up halfway, I suggest that you can sign up, which is free. You will receive an email exercise from them everyday. You just need 5 minutes to finish it. Convenient, and easy. Also you can improve your English reading. Please try it!

Best wishes and happy new year!

  • Patience, Persistence and Perspiration

    2007-06-14 02:05:28

It's impossible to discuss work without weaving attitude into the subject.  Thomas Edison is a classic example of how attitude relates to work. While being questioned by a young reporter about an invention he had been working on for a long time, he revealed one of  the secrets of his greatness. The young reporter asked,"Mr. Edison, how does it feel to have failed 10,000 times in your present venture?" Edison replied,"Young man, since you are just getting started in life, I will give you a thought  that  should benefit you in the future. I have not failed anything 10,000 times. I have successfully found 10,000 ways that will not work."

Edison estimated that he actually performed over 14,000 experiments in the process of inventing and perfecting the incandescent light. He successfully found a lot of ways that wouldn't work, but he kept at it until he found one way that would. He proved that the only difference between the big shot and the little shot is the big shot is simply a little shot who kept shooting.

  • Idioms and Proverbs

    2007-04-05 16:46:29

If you say, “The cat's out of the bag” instead of “The secret is given away,” you're using an idiom. The meaning of an idiom is different from the actual meaning of the words used. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a proverb. Proverbs are old but familiar sayings that usually give advice. Both idioms and proverbs are part of our daily speech. Many are very old and have interesting histories.

    Today,I give you two examples.

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

This proverb comes from the ancient Romans, who believed the apple had magical powers to cure illness. In fact, apples are filled with vitamin C, protein, pectin, natural sugars, copper, and iron. They do promote health.

    “Strike while the iron’s hot.”

When you do this, you’re taking advantage of a good opportunity. Blacksmiths must shape iron into objects during the brief time it’s red-hot.

  • Bob 的照片

    2007-03-10 00:28:42

    2006年2月,Bob成为我们家中的一员,这些是他刚出生不久的照片

    今天,他一岁了.

  • Bob

    2007-03-09 22:53:27

Bob is a dog, he is my dog. He is a pug dog. I love him and he loves me.

Since he came into our family, I began to like every dog. My fiancé said this would happen, but I didn’t believe him. I didn’t like dogs at all since I got bitten when I was small. But now I can’t imagine life without our Bob. Just like some women who didn’t used to like kids but after they had their own babies, they began to like all kids. Bob is our “Bobber”, he is so funny and interesting. For me, he is not just a dog, he is at least half person.

He always gets up earlier than me in the morning. Much earlier - sigh. The first thing he does, of course, is poop and pee. If I don’t wake up after his poop’s done, he will harrumph in my face. That means: “Mom, I’m finished, please wipe my ass.” After a vigorous wipe, he becomes a happy dog again and runs away with his curly tail, which makes a perfect circle on his butt, wagging furiously.

       What a Bob!

Another happy thing for Bob, and funny thing for us, is his eating. People like every kind of delicious food and so does Bob. He likes meat, crackers, Pringles, candies and milk and mashed potatoes. When he eats, especially meat, he always devours it ravenously. What a glutton! Just like Bajie eats ginseng fruits and doesn’t know what the flavour is. Sometimes when I feed him, I like to tease him. I dangle the food in the air and Bob stands up expectantly on his two feet. He is quite a dancer! Looking at me eagerly, he starts barking at me in his adorable, rough, gravelly voice if I continue to tease him. Every now and then he pirouettes on the floor like Fred Astaire till he gets the food. Bob is my first pet dog. I don’t know about other dogs, whether they have the same habits or not, but my fiancé has had many, many dogs. He says Bob is completely unique. For instance, peppers. Bob likes peppers very much. He likes the round ones called bell peppers. My fiancé laughs at him, and says “Bob, you are one of a kind!”

       What a funny Bob!

He seldom goes out so he is not used to other dogs. Even those who are smaller than him can test his courage. My fiancé calls him a “pussy!” One day, when I came back home, a little dog, part Chihuahua (from Mexico), followed me. He was so tiny and cute, he was not much bigger than a rat! We let him in and put him on the sofa outside of our door. We wanted him to be familiar with the environment, so we played with him and petted him until he was quite comfy with us. Then we brought out the Bobber, since we wanted him to start being comfortable around other dogs. I was afraid Bob might be jealous and they would fight each other. The two dogs began to bark, and growl ferociously. That Chihuahua was just one third the size of Bob, but he was very brave and barked loudly. He was not afraid of Bob at all. As for Bob, he was brave too, with my fiancé’s protection, woofing fiercely from his arms. But without protection? His tail was not a wagging circle any more. Just like a sneaky mouse, Bob ran away quietly. It was like a tank running away from a QQ! You just had to laugh! Eventually they seemed to become more friendly, and Bob even tried a sniff or two of Chihuahua butt! Wow, good play was going on! Of course, then the little dog chased him off again!

    What a pussy Bob! -sigh

  • 一撮毛

    2007-03-08 23:49:22

    ... ...

  • The 2:20 To Boston

    2007-03-06 18:50:25

John Jones was in New York City. He wanted to go to Boston, so he went to the airport and bought a ticket. Having a few minutes to spare, he walked over to some scales, stepped on them, inserted a coin and down came his fortune:"Your name is John Jones, you weigh 188 pounds and you are going to catch the 2:20 to Boston." He was astounded because all of the information was correct. He figured this must be a trick, so he stepped back on the scales, inserted another coin and down came his fortune:"Your name is still John Jones, you still weigh 188 pounds and you are still going to catch the 2:20 to Boston." Now he was more puzzled than ever. Sensing a trick, he decided to "fool" whoever or whatever was responsible. He went into the men's room and changed clothes. Once again he stepped on the scales, inserted his coin and down came his fortune:"Your name is still John Jones, you still weigh 188 pounds-- but you just missed the 2:20 to Boston."
