Ambition
Joseph Epstein, a famous American writer, once said, " We decide what is important and what is trivial in life. In the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about." He gives due weight to the role of ambition in our life, but he ignores the fact that ambition alone cannot form or change a person's destiny.(反驳对方观点前,先肯定其合理之处) To fulfill ambition and "make us significant", we also need to be hard-working, persistent, and courageour.
First of all, if you have know clearly what you want your life to be, it is hard work that carries you there. Take myself for example. I was born and grew up in a mountain village where many parents were illiterate and few children could go to first-class high schools, let alone enter college. Dissatisfied with living a farmer' life, I always dreamed of going to university and seeing the outside world. During the 12 years of schooling before college, I spent most of my time learning and worked harder than any classmate. Now, when I enjoy the fruits of my labor, I believe more firmly that "hard work" makes perfect(改自Practice makes perfect熟能生巧).
Besides hard work, it takes persistence to travel on the path to your dream place. Numerous stories of success tell us that there is no royal road to great accomplishment(改自there is no royal road to learning学无坦途). Thomas Edison experimented and failed hundreds of times before inventing the light bulb. Abraham Lincoln lost dozens of political elections before becoming president of the US. Whatever your ambition is, the way to achieve it is not always even. To get where you want, you sometimes have to be able to face setbacks, overcome obstacles, and above all never give up.
In many other cases, it takes courage to do what you aspire to. Darwin would not have publicized his The Evolution of Species if he had been afraid to fight against his times. Amelia Earhart would not have become a pilot and realized her ambition to fly across the Atlantic Ocean if she had lacked the courage to defy social conventions. As these examples have illlustrated, if you have a strong faint in what you choose to do and in what you want to achieve, you must be strong enough to stick to it despite sneers, oppositions, and social pressure.
I agree with Joseph Epstein that we can shape our own destiny, but as the above has shown, I am not convinced that ambition alone can make it happen. To turn our dreams into reality, we need to work hard, persevere and be brave.
