(Father's Day)

How did it start?

1 In America, Father's Day does not fall in August. And it wasn't created by a proud parent, either. While Mother's Day in the U.S. was started by a mother, Father's Day was actually started by a daughter, Sonora Dodd.

2 Dodd's mother died while giving birth to her sixth child. Dodd's father, William Smart, a Civil War 1)veteran, 2)raised Sonora and the five other kids by himself on a farm in eastern Washington state.
1) veteran (n.)
All of my uncles are veterans.
2) raise (v.) 扶养
My mom raised me all by herself.

3 After Dodd became an 1)adult, she 2)realized the many 3)sacrifices her father had made to raise the family. His birthday was in June, so she wanted to make a holiday to honor him that month. She held the first Father's Day 4)celebration on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. The celebration soon 5)caught on around the country.
1) adult (n.) 成人
Why do adults act like children sometimes?
2) realize (v.)
I didn't realize how smart she was until I had spoken with her.
3) sacrifice (n.)
She made a huge sacrifice so that her husband might succeed.
4) celebration (n.)
This celebration will last all night long.
5) catch on (v.)
This new song is beginning to catch on across America.

4 In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day, but it didn't become 1)official until 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson 2)declared the third Sunday of June as Father's Day.
1) official (a.)
This is the official acceptance letter from my university.
2) declare (v.)
Don't believe anything the president declares.

5 These days, when children can't visit their fathers or take them out to dinner, they send a 1)greeting card. 2)Ties, flowers and cookies are also popular gifts. And while such companies may be 3)grateful for the extra business, fathers everywhere are the real winners.
1) greeting card (n.)
Please send your grandfather a greeting card.
2) tie (n.) 领带
