    When we two parted(Byron)

    When we two parted
    In silence and tears,
    Half broken-hearted
    To sever for years,
Pale grew thy cheek and cold,
    Colder thy kiss;
    Truly that hour foretold
    Sorrow to this!

    The dew of the morning
    Sunk chill on my brow-
    It felt like the warning
    Of what I feel now.
    Thy vows are all broken,
    And light is thy fame:
    I hear thy name spoken,
    And share in its shame.

    They name thee before me,
    A knell to mine ear;
    A shudder comes o’er me-
    Why wert thou so dear?
They know not I knew thee
    Who knew thee too well:
long, long shall I rue thee,
    Too deeply to tell.

    In secret we met-
    In silence I grieve,
    That thy heart could forget,
    Thy spirit deceive.
    If I should meet thee
    After ling year,
    How should I greet thee?
    With silence and tears.

I wandered lonely as a cloud (Wordsworth)

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high over vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
    A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine,
And twinkle on the milky way.
    They stretched in never-ending line
    Along the margin of a bay;
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
    Out-did the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay,
    In such a jocund company;
    I gazed--and gazed--but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought.

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
    Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
    And dances with the daffodils.

    A red,red rose(Burns)

    o my luve's like a red,red rose

      that's newly spring in june:

o my luve's like the melodie

      that's sweetly play'd tune.

as fair art thou,my bonnie lass.

so deep in luve am i:

and i will luve thee still,my dear,

      till a'the seas gang dry.

till a'the seas gang dry,my dear,

      and the rocks melt wi'the sun;

o i will luve thee still, my dear,

while the sands o'life shall run.

and fare thee week,my onlu luve!

      and fare thee awhile!

and i will come again,my luve,

      tho'it were ten thousand mile.

  • songs and poems

    2007-10-06 22:35:45

Why read, and sometimes even write poetry? That question is not difficult to answer if we change the word poetry to songs.

I sing when i feel good. When i sing my favourite songs,i feel even better.Sometimes when i am listening to music ang to the song words,i feel that it was written for me.A good song always makes me feel something. There songs that i sing in my head between classes and songs that i want to sing when the school bell rings by the end of the day.

They are like bright and warm colours in the middle of greys and shades.I like songs about love and friendship. The extraordinary thing is,my feelings are more special when i sing my favourite  songs in English.

I also like reading.I used to avoid poetry until an e-pal told i should recite poems and not look up the meaning of the words.Poetry uses many difficult words and idioms, but the best thing is to just  forget about them.In the beginning i feel quite strange. Now i always lock the door.Reading aloud gives you a strange feeling, but when you have some practice and fall into the rhythm, the rhyme and the sounds of the words,it is really a special experience.

I started with small poems, but now i think i most like long poems.I have different feelings with different poems. When i have had a bad day at school,i read Keats and forget eaerything. When i am sad i read Wordsworth by the light of a candle. When the poem is finished,i close the book and my sadness is gone.

  • Mid Autumn

    2007-09-23 20:56:27

    (From China Daily)
    Mid-Autumn Festival
The 15th day of the 8th lunar month

The joyous Mid-Autumn Festival was celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth moon, around the time of the autumn equinox(秋分). Many referred to it simply as the "Fifteenth of the Eighth Moon".

This day was also considered as a harvest festival since fruits, vegetables and grain had been harvested by this time and food was abundant. Food offerings were placed on an altar set up in the courtyard. Apples, pears, peaches, grapes, pomegranates(石榴), melons, oranges and pomelos(柚子) might be seen. Special foods for the festival included moon cakes, cooked taro(芋头)and water caltrope(菱角), a type of water chestnut resembling black buffalo horns. Some people insisted that cooked taro be included because at the time of creation, taro was the first food discovered at night in the moonlight. Of all these foods, it could not be omitted from the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The round moon cakes, measuring about three inches in diameter and one and a half inches in thickness, resembled Western fruitcakes in taste and consistency. These cakes were made with melon seeds(西瓜子), lotus seeds(莲籽), almonds(杏仁), minced meats, bean paste, orange peels and lard(猪油). A golden yolk(蛋黄) from a salted duck egg was placed at the center of each cake, and the golden brown crust was decorated with symbols of the festival. Traditionally, thirteen moon cakes were piled in a pyramid to symbolize the thirteen moons of a "complete year," that is, twelve moons plus one intercalary(闰月的) moon.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional festivity for both the Han and minority nationalities. The custom of worshipping the moon can be traced back as far as the ancient Xia and Shang Dynasties (2000 B.C.-1066 B.C.). In the Zhou Dynasty(1066 B.C.-221 B.C.), people hold ceremonies to greet winter and worship the moon whenever the Mid-Autumn Festival sets in. It becomes very prevalent in the Tang Dynasty(618-907 A.D.) that people enjoy and worship the full moon. In the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279 A.D.), however, people send round moon cakes to their relatives as gifts in expression of their best wishes of family reunion. When it becomes dark, they look up at the full silver moon or go sightseeing on lakes to celebrate the festival. Since the Ming (1368-1644 A.D. ) and Qing Dynasties (1644-1911A.D.), the custom of Mid-Autumn Festival celebration becomes unprecedented popular. Together with the celebration there appear some special customs in different parts of the country, such as burning incense(熏香), planting Mid-Autumn trees, lighting lanterns on towers and fire dragon dances. However, the custom of playing under the moon is not so popular as it used to be nowadays, but it is not less popular to enjoy the bright silver moon. Whenever the festival sets in, people will look up at the full silver moon, drinking wine to celebrate their happy life or thinking of their relatives and friends far from home, and extending all of their best wishes to them.

    Moon Cakes

There is this story about the moon-cake. during the Yuan dynasty (A.D. 1280-1368) China was ruled by the Mongolian people. Leaders from the preceding Sung dynasty (A.D. 960-1280) were unhappy at submitting to the foreign rule, and set how to coordinate the rebellion without being discovered. The leaders of the rebellion, knowing that the Moon Festival was drawing near, ordered the making of special cakes. Backed into each moon cake was a message with the outline of the attack. On the night of the Moon Festival, the rebels successfully attached and overthrew the government. Today, moon cakes are eaten to commemorate this legend and was called the Moon Cake.

For generations, moon cakes have been made with sweet fillings of nuts, mashed red beans, lotus-seed paste or Chinese dates(枣子), wrapped in a pastry. Sometimes a cooked egg yolk can be found in the middle of the rich tasting dessert. People compare moon cakes to the plum pudding and fruit cakes which are served in the English holiday seasons.

Nowadays, there are hundreds varieties of moon cakes on sale a month before the arrival of Moon Festival.
(Happy Mid- Autumn Day,everyone. If you can not go home,be remember to make phone calls home~~)

  • one's own point of view

    2007-08-22 16:39:32

The UNO solicited children all over the worldfor an answer to the question:Please give your own point of view on the grain shortage of other countries. The result was no answer from any child of any country.

The reason was found as follows.

Children from Africa didn't know what it was by "grain";those from Europe had no idea of "shortage";those from Latin America got puzzled about "please".American teenagers knew nothing about "other countries".The problem with Asians was "your point of view"--something alion to them.

It is a joke, but not a funny one.

  • GAP

    2007-08-21 19:01:46

I am now tutoring two students. In the morning,i go to a very rich family, living in a high -21th- floor house, the child has everything that he wants, like piano, trumpet, etc~in the afternoon, you know,a poor family,i mean finacially, they live in a middle-mountain cave(窑洞),very high also, the child even doesn't have a tape recorder!he says he wants to own one,for he needs it for his english studies! They other day,i offered him my walkman(i was trying to be kind but not,you know, hurt his dignity.god knows,i haven't touched it for quite a long time!!),he refused, saying that he just borrowed it for three days, and the way he treated it made my eyes watered, true!

i don't live in a very rich family, still i am shocked at this gap,a real gap around me,sometimes i just try to think, but that just makes me puzzled and sad more, and i am trying to do something i could,i know it is not enough, but i am trying、、、

Best wishes for the both, they two are all eager to learn, that is good, and who knows what the gap would change to be.

It is nearly two weeks since i got back from Wuxi.Yeah, when i had the idea of "going out for a while",i just cannot stop thinking of that,i could focus on nothing. So on a monday morning,at about 10,i began to pack, actually nothing else but a backpack, when i reached the station,it was nealy eleven ,i said to my roommate who saw me off,"if i can stiil get a sitting-ticket,i am doomed to go."you know the train leaves at eleven fifty! And guess what,i got it!Then i made a phone call to my friend(she works in Wuxi),"i am going to see you,i will arrive in Wuxi tomorrow morning at this time, and it took me quite a long time to convince her~~~then i set off with the train, beginning a thrilling journey.

She had to work(it would great if she was working at nights that week but who knows.)I travelled alone, taking a map with me,taking off bus, walking~~~~a great one, unforgettable one.

i am now a tutor, yesterday i had three students, but today only two left, and it doesn't  feel good really.I quit one of the students,i use "quit" since i could not find a better word!

I have tutored him for quite a long time, but sadly there is no obvious improvement till now,you know what i mean, anyway.Maybe i am too strict with him,but i have met many students in the last three years, but it turned out to be that he is the most "difficult" one. He was cooperative during classes most of the time, yet i can not exactly find the effective way for both of us,to get better results. When i asked for advice,my teacher said,"how can it be? you know him so well, both the strong and weak points~~don't worry, take it easy and be patient~~" Well, knowing him so well may be the problem!how can i take it easy?how can i be persistant?etc. The anwsers are so hard to give,i am really worried about him,he did not take the important exam  in july, but chose to study for another year, another junior-three -year so that he may be able to attend a good senior high school,he has his aim,it is a prestigeous one.Actually i don't think it worthwhile,he got too much pressure upon himself, what is it that a so-called good school actually is like??After getting into a senior school,he then has to work harder and strive(struggle)for a good university,an endless journey,i know learning is a long journey for all of us, but his attitude~~these two days,i got very tired when having lessons for him,not physically you know.i felt depressed ,sad ,urh,i don't know why,and it occoured to me that i can find another teacher for him,and it may help, new teacher, new ways~~and i did,i recommended one of my classmates,i know i am not a responsible teacher in this way,but i do hope it will work.Something getting better but not worse. He seemed to be hurt when i came up with the idea,no preparations at all~~forgive me!That is why i refer myselfa total loser, and i begin to be afraid of teaching now, worst of all ,this september i will begin my filed work,God,i look forward for it,and at the same time,i do not want to face it!!long long way to go,and so much to learn.

  • free soon

    2007-07-16 20:49:10

we had the exam for translation theory and practice this afternoon, the teacher covered the text books(notes mostly) only, and that's really disappointed me,i thought she may prepare something more hard or "advanced",when i scaned the paper firstly,:boring!~~~we have two more:advanced english(tomorrow morning) and British literature the day after tomorrow, then i will free.

these days, many many visitors came here, college students or sightseer, this city is a good one to learn revolutonary spirits~~yesterday i got to know another Japanese friend,he is a friend of our teacher of Japanese,he is over 70,yet trying to make reasearch programms, for his job, tomorrow he will go to Hu Kou Waterfall, but my exam will end at 12 ,it is apity i may not go with them~~it is about two years ago  since the last time i went there,i truely want to help him,to take notes,an interpreter ~~anyway, wish he has a good time, perhaps i may go ~~~`i really want to go out,to get something fresh~~~~

by 19th,we will free,i may not go back home,since 30 of us are required to take training-class ,for the evaluation this september, and i will try to make the vocation a happy and full one~~

best wishes for all of you, cool days~~`

  • A story

    2007-07-13 13:02:43

One day a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people live.

They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?”

        “It was great, Dad.”

“Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked

         “Oh, yeah,” said the son.

“So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father.

The son answered: “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them.

        The boy’s father was speechless.

Then his son added, “Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are.”

Isn’t perspective a wonderful thing? Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about we don’t have.

Appreciate every single thing you have, especially your friends.

the anwers of the test are here, check it~~~

If you choose A,the best comfort for you is love when you suffer a setback or a failure.Therefor it is a must for you to find a true sweetheart and only in this way can you realize your dream of success.

If you choose B,you are an optimist and you are sure to overcome any obstacles. What you need are some bosom friends to pour out your bitterness and sufferings.

If you choose C,you are one who relieves pressure and worries by using fantasies, which can solve the problems only of the present, not the future. So it is quite necessary for you to temper yourself through frustration and reality.

If you choose D,you are the person who likes to busy himself almost all the time.Work takes  up almost of your time. What you earnestly need is to improve interpersonal relationships with others and try your utmost to be more sociable.

Does these make sense? For me,they do! i chose B, though sometimes i am not that optimistic~~~ i always try to be and try to persuade people around me to be so as well~~i do have one or two friends to pour my bitterness ~~anyway, hope you not get much pressure, especially which you put upon youself!Good days~
