WIn an attempt to influence the members of the international Olympic committee on their choice of venue for the games in the year 2004, the organizers of Manchester's bid have already drawn up an itinerary and schedule of events. A copy has been leaked and is reproduced below.
OPENING CEREMONY
The Olympic flame will be ignited by a petrol bomb thrown by a native of the city (preferably from the Moss Side area), wearing the traditional balaclava. The flame will be contained in a large chip van situated on the roof of the stadium.
THE EVENTS
In previous Olympic games, Manchester's competitors have not been particularly successful. In order to redress the balance, some of the events have been altered slightly to the advantage of local 'Manchester' athletes.
100 METERS SPRINT
Competitors will have to hold a video recorder and microwave oven (one in each arm) and on the sound of the starting pistol, a police dog will be released from a cage 10 yards behind the athletes.
100 METERS HURDLES
As above but with added obstacles (i.e. car bonnets, hedges, gardens, fences walls etc.)
HAMMER
Competitors in this event may choose the type of hammer they wish to use (claw, sledge etc.) the winner will be the one who can cause the most grievous bodily harm to members of the public within the time allowed.
FENCING
Entrants will be asked to dispose of as much stolen silver and jewelry as possible in 5 minutes.
SHOOTING
A strong challenge is expected from the local men in this event. The first target will be a moving police van. In the second round, competitors will aim at a post office clerk bank teller or Securicor style wages delivery man.
BOXING
Entry to the boxing will be restricted to husband and wife teams, and will take place on a Friday night. The husband will be given 15 pints of lager while the wife will be told not to make him any tea when he gets home. The bout will then commence.
CYCLING TIME TRIALS
Competitors will be asked to break into the University bike shed and take an expensive mountain bike owned by some mummy's boy from the country on his first trip away from home. All against the clock
CYCLING PURSUIT
As above but the bike will be owned by a visiting member of the Australian rugby team, who will witness the theft.
MODERN PENTATHLON
Amended to include mugging, breaking and entering, flashing, joy riding and arson.
THE MARATHON
A safe route has yet to be decided , but the competitors will be issued with sharp sticks and bags with which to pick up litter on their way round the course.
SWIMMING
Competitors will be thrown off the bridge over the ship canal. The first three survivors back, will decide the medals
MEN'S 50KM WALK
Unfortunately this will have to be cancelled as the police cannot guarantee the safety of anyone walking the streets of
Manchester.
THE CLOSING CEREMONY
Entertainment will include formation rave dancing by members of the Salford Health in the Community anti-drug campaigners, synchronized rock throwing and music by the Stockport Community Choir. The Olympic flame will be extinguished by someone dropping an old washing machine onto it from the top floor of the block of flats next to the stadium. The stadium will be then boarded up before the local athletes break into it and remove all the copper piping and the central heating boiler.

It's Christmas Eve. I was looking outside the window. It was so beautiful, the city, the lights, the streets, the firework.
Remembering once when I was young, I had no idea about Christmas because after all, it is a western celebration. When I was walking pass one of the churches in the city, a young man stopped me and said, “Hi, little girl, did you know anything about Jesus?”
I was with my mom, and we talked to each other for a while. And then, we got to know that, Christmas is all about the birth of Jesus, and hence became one of the greatest days for the Christians. That was how I learnt about Christmas, and I also remembered that young man's name was Micky.
A few years later, last night, were again, Christmas. I then become a high school student, and walking in a city which is so beautiful within the arriving of Santa. And when I once again pass that church, I was thinking, is that “Micky” still there?
Saturday night, it was quite cold. I stood in front of the church, and heard someone was singing. I walked into the church, and guess what?
There Micky is, playing piano, and singing the Christmas songs with the children from the neighborhood. How beautiful is that!
I smiled, and thinking, although the snow would never come to our city, it is still a wonderful Christmas

He may be still young, but look out world! He may surprise you! If you ask around, many would say that the music world has a new leader - the real king is Jay chou. As a child, Jay chou was never too good at academic subjects, and when he didn't get into any college, a lot of people predicted that he won't have much potential in life. His mom always worried about his future, but he never did. "I knew I still had music to depend on. For everything else, I've had too much confidence, but it is for my musical talent that I'm so sure of myself," he recalls. Growing up in a single-parent family, Jay lived a solitary childhood. Without many friends, he had a hobby of daydreaming, fantasizing into his world of music.
So how did Jay get into music? At the age of three, he started learning to play the piano. He recalls his mother being very strict, to make sure he practiced sufficiently. Later, he learned to play the cello. Today, both are two instruments that he plays with superior dexterity.
With all the musical talent, it isn't surprising that Jay started out as a songwriter. Since the age of sixteen, he has been writing songs for many of the most popular singers. Today, he has already written for some of the most popular Asian singers, including Coco Lee, Jacky Wu, Valen Hsu, Power Station, etc.
It was only in 2000 that Jay released his own debut album "Jay", with the main style being R & B / rap. Singer/actress Vivian Hsu wrote the lyrics to three of the songs in the album: Cute Woman, Istanbul, and Tornado. Jay's soft and smooth voice is especially soothing and serene, making this first album an immediate hit. Each song in the album has its own, different style, and skillfully, Jay used his voice to suit each song's character.
Lyrics are an element that cannot be neglected. Lyrics of Jay's songs all have a unique touch. In his song "Dad, I am Back", the subject is a broken family. "I heard that after war, there is peace. Why do I always see my dad beating my mom? Since I was young, you told me to learn from you, use you as a model. So much pretense. Mom always said be good, listen to your father. How do you expect me to be like you!" Then, in his song "End of the World", we see a different aspect of him. "Wanting to smile, to disguise the fallen tears. Gently nod, admit the fear of darkness. I just need, you to be at my side for a while. And you, won't bestow a small bit of sympathy."
Ultimately, it is Jay's talent that has brought him to fame. His first two albums were nearly created all by himself - songwriting, producing, harmonizing, etc. In his concerts, it is not unusual to see him play the accompaniment as well as sing at the same time onstage, while his fans cheer wildly from below.
This year, in 2002, Jay has won awards from all over the world. In China, he has won the most prestigious annual Channel V award for Best Male Singer. Today, he is often regarded as the best Asian male singer, and the reputation earned him a title of "Small King of R & B"
