Robin Hood
2008-8-20
5.Rescuing a Friend
The Sheriff's anger grew as the days passed. He decided that the only way to capture Robin Hood was by force. He sent three hundred men from his army to Sherwood Forest. They were to bring Robin Hood back even if he were dead.
Robin was not happy to hear this news.He knew that many people could be hurt if a battle occurred. He had only killed one man his entire life and he had regretted it.He never wanted to kill another man as long as he lived.
For a week,Robin and his men stayed hidden in the forest. They managed to keep hidden from the Sheriff's men the entire time. The Sheriff's men were getting angry. They were tired of hunting through the forest every day.
On the eighth day, some of the Sheriff's men went to the inn.Robin knew this was the perfect time to discover their plans. Many of his men volunteered(自願) to spy on them but Robin picked Will Stutely. Will was the sneakiest man Robin have ever know.
Will disguised himself as a friar and went to the inn.He knew the innkeeper would tell him what was going on.As he reached the inn,he saw the sherif's men drinking. He decided to wait to speak to the innkeeper when it was safe to talk to him.
Will sat in a corner and waited for the men to leave. He was glad that no one had noticed him.The innkeeper's cat sat on the floor next to Will.As he reached to pet it,the hood of his cloak fell away.Quickly, will replaced the hood but it was too late. One of the Sheriff's guards recognized him. Before he could run,the men jumped on will and beat him. They knocked him unconscious and dragged him away.
The innkeeper's daughter,Maken, ran to tell Robin.
"Will Stutely has been captured"she cried,"They will hang him tomorrow in Nottingham."
"Not if i can help it"sand Robin and he quickly called his men.
That night the men made a plan to rescue Will. Each of the men promise their life to save their brave friend.
The next day,Robin's men met outside of Nottingham. Each man went to the town in a disguise. There,Robin's men tried to blend in with the people in the crowd. This way their presence would not be discovered.
"Remember" said Robin as they neared the town,"Harm on one unless you must."
After that, the man separated and joined in with the crowd of towms people.

4.Robin Fools the Sheriff
when the Sheriff found what had happened,he was very angry. He declared that the tinker would be hanged for treason when he was caught. Then he locked himself in his room. And he stayed there for days.During this time,he made a plan to capture Robin Hood.
"Robin Hood cannot resist a good contest,"thought the Sheriff."So,that will be the best way to capture him."
The Sheriff came out from his room and announced that a contest would take place. The best archer would be awarded a golden arrow. He knew that Robin would come to win the arrow. When he did,the Sheriff would arrest him.And Robin would be hanged.
When Robin Hood heard the announcement,he was excited.
"I will easily win that golden arrow."he told his men.
"But Robin."said David of Doncaster,"the contest is a trick to capture you."
"Why do you say that?"asked Robin.
"I was warned by Eadom.the innkeeper,"he replied.
"Well,if that's the true,I am definitely entering the contest,"said Robin."I will show the Sheriff a few tricks of my own."
So Robin and his men began working on disguises. Some pretended to be beggars while others pretended they were friars.Soon, all of Robin's men had disguised themseves. They were ready to make their way to the contest in Nottingham.
The place where the contest was held was brightly decorated.Robin flew everywhere in the breeze.Hundreds of people had come to watch the contest.Everywhere the Sheriff looked,he could see people, but none looked like Robin Hood.
He watched as the archers came forward but he still saw no sign of the famous outlaw. The contest began and one by one the archers were defeated.B the final round, only three archers left. The Sheriff recognized two of them but the third was a strange. The stranger was wearing a torn red cloak. He also had a patch over his left eye.
"That stranger resembles Robin Hood"thought the Sheriff."But his hair was dark and he is blind in one eye."Many people were surprised when they saw the stranger preparing to shoot. They wondered how a man with one eye could correctly aim his bow.But the man's aim was perfect. His arrow hit the target directly in the center.
The Sheriff stepped forward to present the man with his prize."That was an excellent shot,"the Sheriff said to the stranger."Better than Robin Hood have done,i believe."
"Thank you, kind sir."the man replied proudly.
"I'd be honored if you would join me."the sheriff offered."Perhaps together we could capture the coward Robin Hood.He was too afraid to show himself today."
"Thank you for your offer,Sheriff, but i must decline," said the strange."I already serve in an honorable position."
Later,as Robin Hood's men gathered around a fire, the stranger showed them his arrow. Then he removed the patch from his left eye.The stranger was Robin Hood himself.
"I hate that the Sheriff thinks me a coward,"he said, laughing.
"Don't worry,"said Little John."Will and i sent the Sheriff a message."
As the Sheriff was eating,an arow flew through the window and into the dining hall.Tied to the arrow was a letter for the Sheriff.
"You have awarded Robin Hood the golden arrow."the Sheriff read."Enjoy your meal and think twice before calling me a coward."
Angrily, the Sheriff crumpled the note and threw it into the fire.

3.The Ballad Singer
Two hundred pounds were offered as a reward for his capture. The greedy Sheriff of Nottingham was eager to capture Robin Hood. The Sheriff vowed to himself that he would win the money.
He asked the people of Nittingham to help him serve Robin Hood's arrest warrant. But the sheriff did not know that Robin had a group of loyal men.He did not know tha Robin Hood was their beloved leader.
The townspeople,on the other hand, knew all about Robin Hood's men. They knew that if anyone tried to serve the warrrant, they would be beaten terribly.Because of this, all of the townsmen refused to help the sheriff.
In the nearby town of Banbury, however, the sheriff found his help. The brave tinker who worked there was not afraid of Robin and his men.He gladly offered to serve the warrant to Robin Hood.Relieved to have found his help, the Sheriff gave the tinker the warrant.
During this time,Robin Hood had traveled to Nottingham. He had wanted to see what the Sheriff had been up to.AS he walked down the road, the thiker came walking toward him.
"Good morning,sir"Robin called out.
"Hello, young man"replied the tinker."what are you doing on this fine day?"
"I'm heading to the inn"said Robin Hood,"Do you care to join me for a drink?"
The tinker gladly accepted Robin's offer. The two walked along together.
"So,do you have any interesting news to tell?"asked Robin.
"Well,"said the tinker."I'm on a mission for the Sheriff."
"Is that so?"asked Robin,"what kind of mission?"
"I am supposed to serve a warrant to the outlaw,Robin Hood."
"Do you have the warrant?'asked Robin.
"It's here in this sack,"the tinker replied.
"Then be careful."warned Robin."Robin Hood is a sneaky man.He has been known to play a few tricks."
"I am not worried about Robin Hood's tricks,"said the tinker."But just to be safe, can you tell me what he looks like?"That way i can be careful and watch for him."
"That's a good idea."said Robin.trying not to laugh."You are smart to be watching for him.Robin Hood is about the same height as i.in fact ,we're the same age and both of us have blue ayes."
"Thank you."said the tinker."I'll be watching for him."
"Watch carefully,"said Robin."You never know when he'll appear."
By this time they had reacher the inn.Robin and his men had spent much time at the inn. They especially liked it in winter when the Forest was full of snow.
The innkeeper recognized Robin but knew not to say so.Instead the acted as if he were a new customer.
Robin ordered drinks for both himself and the tinker. The tinker downed his greedily but Robin only pretended to drink.
As the tinker became drunk,he began to sing.Robin enyoyed listening to the balled he sang.Soon, the tinker laid his head on the table.Within minutes.he had fallen fast asleep.
Robin slipped the warrant out of the tinker's bag and headed for the door.He winked at the innkeeper who waved as he left.
The next day,Robin waited for the tinker. He knew the man would be coming back to find him.
Sure enough,he saw the tinker walking toward him.He could tell that the man was angry at having been fooled. When Robin saw the mad look upon the man's face,he began to laugh.
"You won't laugh when the Sheriff has you."the tinnker called.
"The Sheriff will not have me today."said Robin Hood.
He took out his born and called to his men.Little John appeared with several of Robin's men.
"What is it.Robin Hood?"Little John asked.
"This man plans to serve me a warrant,if i am arrested, you know i will be hanged."
"Let's hang him,instead,"said Little John,laughing.
"I don't think we should."said Robin to his men.
"Why not?"asked John."He woulld let you be hanged."
"He's a brave man."replied Robin."and i like him.He's funny and hi's really not a bad man at all."
"Join us."Robin Hood offered the tinker."You can sing balleds for us.I love to hear you sing."
The tinker could not help but like Robin Hood.He thought for a minute and then he agreed. The tinker was now one of the Robin Hood's men.

Robin Hood
1.The Outlaws in the Forest
Long ago in England, lived a famous outlaw named Robin Hood.Robin Hood lived in Sherwood Forest with one hundred fifty of his loyal friends. He and his men were known throughout England for their kindness.Even though he was on outlaw,he never harmed the people of the country.
Robin Hood had more skill with a bow and arrow than the king’s finest archers.Once, before he became an outlaw,he decided to enter a contest to prove his skill. The contest was held by the Sheriff of Nottingham. The man who was the best with his bow and arrow would win a prize. The prize was a large barrel of ale.
Young Robin Hood was eager to join the contest for he knew that he was the best archer in all the land. But that was not the only reason he wanted to enter. He knew that the beautiful Maid Marion would be there.Robin Hood hoped to impress Marion with his skill.
Robin took his finest bow,his best arrows, and set off through the forest. He thought happily of Maid Marion as he walked.
Soon,he saw a group of the king’s men dressed all in green. The men were sitting under a large tree. They were eating lunch. One of the men waved at Robin and asked him where he was going.
“I’m on my way to Nottingham”Robin replied.”Nottingham?’’asked the man”What business do you have there?”
“I’m going to enter the Sheriff’s archery contest”said Robin.
The king’s man though this was funny.”How old are you?” asked one of the men.
“Barely eighteen”said Robin.”But I’m excellent with a bow”
“You’re still a baby”replied the man.”Do you really think you can possibly win?”
Robin’s feelings were hurt by the men’s teasing. As the men continued to laugh at him.Robin became angry.
“I’ll bet I can shoot the best one of them”sadi Robin, pointing to a herd of deer.
“That deer?”said the man.”He’s sixty yards away”
“I can easily shoot him from here”said Robin
“You are on then”.answered the man.”Let’s see what you can do”
Carefully,Robin strung his bow,Next,he picked the straightest arrow he could find. When he was ready,Robin aimed carefully and fired his arrow. The deer fell down, instantly dead.
But the king’s men were not impressed. They were bitter at having lost a bet to such a young man.
Robin realized that the men were not going to keep the bet.Without saying a word,he turned and walked away.
Before he had gotten far,one of the men called out to him.
“You’ve killed one of the king’s deer,boy.”
Before he realized what was happening,an arrow shot past his head barely missing him.Without thinking,Robin turned and fired an arrow in return. The man whom he had made the bet with fell dead.
Robin turned and ran quickly into to the forest. He was angry and upset because he had killed a man.Robin had never wanted to hurt anyone.Even though he was protecting himself,he felt terrible about the murder.
Robin never returned to his home.He decided to live in the forest with the other outlaws. The Sheriff of the Nottingham became Robin Hood’s worst enemy. He swore that he would capture Robin Hood and execute him.
A year passed and Robin Hood was not found. He had hidded himself well in his new home.During his year in the forest,Robin met many other outlaws. Many were outlaws because they had stolen food for their srarving families. Some had been farmers whose lands were taken.
Robin’s kindness was noticed by everyone he met.Because he was so kind and fair, these men chose him to be their leader.
Robin and his men never harmed the poor people that lived around them. But they always took from the rich who had treated them unfairly. These friendly outlaws used what they took to help the poor people of the country.Anyone who needed their help could count on Robin and his men.Soon, the stories of Robin Hood and his men spread all over England. It seemed that everyone knew a story about Robin and his men.
2.Little John Fights Robin Hood
One morning Robin Hood and his men woke to find that it was a beautiful day. They walked down to the brook to wash themseves.
"What a wonderful day for adventure"Robin said to his friends as they washed.
"It is a lovely day, indeed"replied his friend Will Stutely.
"That settles it"said Robin,"I'm off to find some fun"
"Shall we go along?"asked will.
"There is no need, but listen for me to call.If i blow upon the horn three times, you should come to help"
"We will be listening"Will promised.
Robin walked through Sherwood Forest but he didn't see anything interesting.Nor did he encounter anything adventure. He continued to walk. Finally,Robin came to a narrow bridge. There was only enough room for one man at a time to cross on it.As Robin stepped onto the bridge,he noticed someone coming from the other side.
The tall man had come to the bridge at the same time as Robin. Both men thought they had the right to cross first.
"I was here first,so i will be the first to cross"said Robin.
"I was here before you.So let me pass"answered the man.
The man was much taller than Robin. And he had better build, too.Still Robin did not plan to let the man cross the bridge before him.
"I'll challenge you to a contest"said Robin cheerfully.
"What kind of contest?"asked the tall stranger.
"Let us meet in the center and fighe with staffs. The man who falls into the water first is the loser."
"That's a fine idea,"said the stranger,"but you don't have a staff."
"Wait and i will cut one."said Robin and the stranger agreed.
Robin found a thick limb that had fallen to the ground. He cut a staff from it and met the man in the center of the bridge. Both men handled theri weapons with skill. They fought until they were exhausted and both men had been injured.Still, they continued to fight.
The stranger smacked Robin on top of the head. This made Robin angry and he swung his stick. As he did,the stranger knocked Robin into the water. He laughed cheerfully as Robin fell.
Robin, too, thought his fall was funny. He sat in the water, laughing at himself.Slowly,ha made his way to the bank of the river. There he took out his horn and blew on ti three times.
Soon,Robin's loyaal friends appeared. They were led by Will.
"This man knocked me in the river"Robbin told Will.laughing as he said it.
The men were angry to hear that their leader had been knocked off the bridge. They decided to make the stranger pay for the way treated Robin. But the stranger fought them bravely.
"Stop"shouted Robin."Leave him alone"
"But he should be punished"said one of the men
"No" said Robin,"it was a fair fight".Then he turned to the stranger and asked,"Will you join me and my men?"
"I may"answered the stranger,"If one of your men can beat me in a contest"
"Another contest,"said Robin, smiling."What is your bet?"
"If someone here is a better archer than i ,i will join."said the man.
"The we shall see"said Robin."Fire away"
The stranger borrowed a bow from one of Robin's men.He aimed at the mark eight yards away.He fired the arrow and it hit the mark directly in the center.Even Robin Hood's own men were impressed by the stranger's skill.
"That was a very good shot"admitted Robin."Now it is my turn, though."
Robin aimed at the same mark the stranger had used.He fired and his arrow split the stranger's arrow in two.
"Wow!"said the stranger when he saw Robin's shot."That was incredible. You have won the bet.I am gladly at your service."
"What is your name?"asked will Stutely
"My name, sir,is John Little"the stranger replied.
Will thought is was funny that such a big man be named Little
"I'm going to call you little John"said Will.
Little JOhn did not like his name being made fun of.Still,it was hard to be angry at such happy men.Soon,he found himself laughing along with them. So,from that day forward John Little was known as Little JOhn.
