    吾之三愿

    Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.
    I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy—ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of my life for a few hours for this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness—that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what—at last—I have found.
    With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine…A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.
    Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.
    This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.

    威廉·布莱克是十九世纪英国浪漫派诗人，主要诗作有诗集《天真之歌》、《经验之歌》等。 早期作品简洁明快，中后期作品趋向玄妙晦涩，充满神秘色彩。本诗选自《天真之歌》。

    　　春天来了，万物复苏。这表现在动物的活动上：鸟儿欢腾，公鸡鸣叫，云雀在天上翻飞，夜莺在山谷间歌唱；也表现在孩子们的活动上：欢蹦乱跳，笑语喧哗，跟小动物一块儿玩耍。

    　　这首诗的三节像三个变焦电影镜头：由远而近依次是山谷树林、村庄农舍，然后聚焦在一个与羊羔相戏的儿童身上。意象鲜明、具体、生动，趣味盎然。而诗以儿童的口吻写出，反映了孩子们对春天的感受。诗行由片语和短句组成，注意押韵和反复，几近童谣，轻松自然，琅琅上口，读来颇有春天气息扑面而来的新鲜感。

    Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born.

    One day the child asked god, “they tell me you are going to send me to earth tomorrow but how am I going to lie there being so small and helpless?”

    God replied, “Among the many angels, I have chosen one for you. She will be waiting for you and will take care of you.”

    “But”, said the child, “Tell me –here in heaven I don’t do anything else but sing and smile. That is what I need to be happy!”

    God said, “Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day. And you will feel your angel’s love and be happy.”

    “And”, said the child.,“ how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me , if I don’t know the language that men talk?”

     

    “That is easy”, said god, “your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak.”

    The child looked up at god saying , “and what am I going to do when I want to talk to you ?”

     

    God smiled at the child saying, “ your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray.”

    The child said, “I’ve heard on earth there are bad men. Who will protect me?”

    God put his arm around the child ,saying, “your angel will defend you, even if it means risking life!”

    The child looked sad, saying , “but I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore.”

    God hugged the child , “your angel will always talk to your about me and will teach you the way to come back to me ,even though I will always be next to you.”

    At that moment there was much peace in heaven , but voices from earth could already be heared.

    The child ,in a hurry, asked softly, “ oh god , if I am about to leave now please tell me my angel’s name !”

     

    God replied, “your angel’s name is of no importance----you will simple call her MOM!”

    前言：我们的生活离不开周围许多不知名的人，没有他们，我们的生活将寸步难行。小男孩的无声之举教会我们，每个人都应该带着感恩的心度过平凡的每一天。

    In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.

    “How much is an ice cream sundae?”

    “Fifty cents,” replied the waitress.

    The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied a number of coins in it.

    “How much is a dish of plain ice cream?” he inquired. Some people were now waiting for a table and the waitress was a bit impatient.

    “Thirty-five cents,” she said brusquely.

    The little boy again counted the coins. “I’ll have the plain ice cream,” he said.

          The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and departed.

    When the waitress came back, she began wiping down the table and then swallowed hard at what she saw. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies -----her tip.
