  • The best way to enlarge one's vocabulary

    2007-11-25

One must grasp a sizeable vocabulary if he wants to be an efficient reader . One cann't read efficiently if he is too much limited in vocabulary . for how well he understands and appreciates what he reads is largely determinded by his knowing of a large number of words .

There are various ways for one to enrich his vocabulary . he can read English newspaper , magazines , and stories , and learn words in use . He can also watch English TV , listen to radio programs , or even take with native speakers . when he meets with some new words , he can refer to the dictionary, which usually supplies adequate information about the words he want to know.

But perhaps the best way is to learn words in context , The term context means the surrounding words that are directly connected to a given word and that add to its meaning. Therefore ,One can arrive at the meaning of an unknown word in context by relating it to the meaning of the words that stand around it .This proves to be a much better way. for a word standing by itself in a list does not offer clues to its meaning as does a word used in a sentence

  • Speaking well is the key to success in life

    2007-9-20

Herewith it is a good article which is about Speaking skill, i just copy it from KAIEN Enlish Training Center, let's enjoy it.

I've never met a successful person who was a poor communicator. If you speak fluently and convincingly, people admire and respect you. They will listen to you, follow you, work for you. Good communication skills are the basis of leadership and the most important skills of all if you want to be successful in life. Let me tell you a story that illustrates this point.

Some years ago, there was an experiment in the UK. People were asked to listen to a series of recordings of speakers with different accents and pronunciations. Some of the speakers spoke confidently and well, others did not. The listeners could not see the people on the recordings and they had never met them. Afterwards, the listeners were asked to choose the speakers they thought were more intelligent, more successful, more honest, and more beautiful. In almost every case, the listeners chose the people who spoke well. Good speaking skills give people a very good impression.

Think about it. Language is the medium of education. In schools and universities, the articulate students get higher scores. Are they more intelligent? Who knows? As far as people are concerned, the way you speak defines who you are. It's obvious.

Language is the medium of social interaction. It influences how we are judged by others, how we make friends, how we 'speak up' and assert ourselves. Children who learn from their parents the value of reading and speaking become more articulate and more successful. People who speak well get better jobs and get more promotion. Can you imagine a business or political leader who cannot speak well? Of course not.

Now imagine how valuable it would be to have excellent communicatiuon skills in English! In fact, it's not that difficult. I can show you how.

For 20 years I have taught people to speak English. I've made it my life's work to learn everything I can about how people learn it. My experience bears out exactly what I've said in the preceding paragraphs: people who are good at language, and who are taught well at language do better in life materially, intellectually, and in terms of self-expression.

On this website I will share with you some of the things I've learned. Feel free to read the articles. If you really want to know more, however, I think you will need to come to see me. You need to practice. Welcome to Kai En, the experts in spoken English.

  • Be careful what you say!

    2007-8-14

Hello friends, maybe everyone had an experience of job interview, herewith it is a good material about job interview which comes Kaien English Learning Center.Hope it can take to you some directions. Hope you like it.
Eight things that you should never say at a job interview

    1. "What does your company do?"
Never ask such a question. You are supposed to know about the company when you go for an interview. Do the research beforehand - visit their website, and look for other sources of information. Only a very careless person would apply to work for a company without knowing anything about them. Employers do not want to hire careless people.

    2. "I don't know much about the job."
You must be very clear on what the job involves and what the employer needs. You must also be clear on why the employer should choose you. If you know what he is looking for, you can give him a reason to hire you.

    3. "I'm looking for a new job because my last one was too busy and too stressful."
Even if your last job was really busy, you should not say that. It suggests that you are looking for an easy life. Do not give the impression that you cannot take any stress. Dealing with stress is a matter of attitude, effort, and experience. Anyone can learn to deal with stress and a heavy workload if he tries. By saying you cannot accept some degree of stress you are saying that you are lacking in these areas. Show that you are willing to take a challenge.

    4. "I've applied for this job because I can learn English here."
This suggests that you will concentrate on practicing English, rather than getting the job done. It is good to show ambition and the desire to learn. However, you must emphasize what you will do for the employer, not what you will do for yourself.

    5. "When can I get a raise?"
Do not focus too much on what you get out of the job. It is not good to suggest that the money is the only issue of concern to you. If the pay and conditions are not good enough you don't have to take the job. Don't try to bargain with the employer.

    6. "I was the captain of the basketball team."
This is fine if it is true. In my experience almost everyone I've ever interviewed is a former captain of a basketball team. Clearly there are a lot of basketball teams in China, so it may not be of great relevance. Also, don't say that you have certain hobbies (classical music, for example) unless it is true. You may think these make you look good, but if you are asked about them and know nothing then it can certainly make you look bad.

    7. "I'd like to work here because it is close to my house."
The employer will wonder what that has to do with him. He will also think that if you find another job that is even closer to your home that you will just change jobs. Don't give the impression that you are looking for the most convenient, short-term arrangement.

    8. "I don't have any questions."
Try to show some enthusiasm for the job. If you go through a whole interview without asking any questions it suggests that you do not want to learn.

  • Self- directed learning

    2007-8-10

In the last week, i took one course about Performence Improvment in our company's university. By one week study, i found out there is a concept that is about Self-directed learning is very popular in now days. What is self-directed learning? I think it is someone who determine his or her own content, set his or her own objects, and decide how well he or she want to learn the material. As everyone knows, the traditinoal course is sitting in the classroom where the instructor tries to meet everyone's needs and usurally fails. So, the self-directed learning and the traditional training are totally different. The SDL is good for us to develope our personal career such as job-related skills.
