  • Kungfu Panda

    2008-06-10 19:44:21

Wohoo, Kungfu panda is coming already !! We have heard a lot of hype about it. And we have Jackie Chan (成龙) and Lucy Liu (刘玉玲)dubbing for the movie.

Released in North America on Jun 6, Kungfu Panda now can be watched on YOUKU.com, without subtitles. See, the bulky panda on the cover is really alive and kicking, right, he knows martial arts (Kungfu).

He is called Po, who loves kungfu and always dreams of being a hero with matchless kungfu. However his father (a goose) wants him to inherit his family noodle business. So one day he earmarked himself as the dragon warrior whose mission is to protect the hometown from the evil Leopard, Tai Lung. Convinced by the master's master Wu Gui, master Shi fu no longer doubts Po, instead he finds great potentials in him and teachs him Kungfu with bread as treat, which is a great incentive to him. And it turns out that it works !  Now he is among his idols -- Tigeress, Viper, Monkey, Crane and Mantis.

With exellent Kungfu, Po then struts his stuff and defeats Tai Lung, making him a real dragon warrior.

Without very complicated plot, the story is quite easy to undersand. Well, a bulky panda becomes a savior, sounds kind of absurd. However it just mirrors the heroism deep down in American.

Panda, Chinese national treasure, now has been on screen as a cartoon image. It reminds me of a photo earlier last year, " a panda climbing on the empire state building" which was entitled " American's fear of China".  Interesting !!

Check out those links for the flick.

  • Goodbye, gangsters

    2008-06-01 23:02:34

To be honest I don't like movies of this kind, somehow I finished this movie at the cost of a shut-eye this afternoon.

The HK movie "Goodbye, gangsters" (再见古惑仔)shot in 2007 seemed like a an end to the series of movies " gansters" that was once a hit in 1990s.

There's no doubt that the " gangsters" series has a very negative impact on the growing-ups in China, even Asia. The violence scenes and brutel gangster behavīors, individualism and heroism hightlighted, just encouraged the youth to follow, which in turn encouraged lots of social problems, campus violence, drugs, gamble, even prostitution.

The authority seemed to have realized its hazard and have been doing sth to make things up. "Goodbye, gangsters" is just a part of the action, following the last feature 九龙冰室 star-roled by 郑伊健。

So this time is a show time for 陈小春, to have a transformation of image, from a real gangster to a regreted gangster.

As a public character, an artist has his social responsibility to bring the public more positive entertainments, to help children and youngsters build up right values. What's more, one should do everything he can to make up for what he did wrong, so does an artist.

The movie again left me pondering if it's really so hard for a gangster to morph into a good guy. Yes, it seems that they are not always given chances to make some changes, once a gangster, always a gangster... And it's like their fate that they can never escape that they always end up caught killing someone for revenge, or dying hard...

I don't think it's good. Whatsoever the movie has to show the audience that people are always given chances to correct after the mistakes they made. That means movies as a public voice that has a profound influence on a wide range of audience, it should take its responsibility to teach people the right things.

General speaking, it's not overstated that the movie is still a great success despite the bloody violence scenes going too far.

  • Old TV dramas

    2008-05-17 12:20:00

Youku is a very cool website where you can’t miss almost what you want, and don’t have to wait longer than that on Tudou or some other video websites before it works smoothly. So it’s not exaggerated to call it YouTube in China. I had a great time reviewing and reminiscing to the happy old days.

I gotta be out of mind spending hours looking for the old operas shot in the early 1990s that was once on Pearl-river channel, as well as their theme songs. All my memory about TV amusement was cartoon at the dusk and soap opera in the evening because TV programs were not available before sunset.

Cantonese tend to watch TV shows in Cantonese, produced in GD or HK, and the corny dramas once on “soap opera” from 9 pm to 10 pm was the highlight of the day, most of them featuring Martial Art, sometimes love stories showing us a spectacular HK. On the list were 天蚕变,鹿鼎记,情满珠江(canton-produced…. The others from Taiwan were 包青天,新白娘子传奇(legend of the white snake, and a lot more beyond I can list.

Do those names ring a bell to you?

  • They can hear you, kid

    2008-04-13 10:55:03

A man met a woman under the moon light for the first time when he was on the square sitting alone, listening to the music from the distance.

The man said" I always talked to the moon when I was a child, felt like a fool, talking to myself"

Woman:" no, not to yourself, here I am"

Man look into the eyes of the woman...

Woman:" what are u looking at?"

    Man:" you"

    Then, they kissed.

Yep, that’s the most romantic scene in the movie “August Rush”, check it out, you can't miss it. I think it looks a little random to kiss someone in first meeting, but that's just the beauty of love, magic, amazing, and overwhelming... all come so natural, without any assuming storyline to make you feel unreal. However it feels unreal, cuz it comes off as fairytale, linked and guided by music, the prince and princess finally met, in the witness of the moon. They had the most amazing night in their lifetime, though following which was a long time of 12 years apart.

She had his son. However it took her 12 years to know their son Evan Taylor (he made his name August rush) was still alive.

August is a music whiz, inheriting the cells from his parents who both are musician. He is sensitive to every little sound that comes to him, he plays by ear, he loves music more than food, and he makes his living by playing guitar on the street and makes his way back home with music in his concert.

The movie was like a musical tracked with lots of beautiful music that you can’t resist loving it, can’t help watching it for the second time just to review that audiovisual fun. Makes you think that music is really something, invisible but existing for real.

August:” Where do you think it comes from, what I heard?”

Sir:” It comes all around, comes through some of us, you can feel it.”

August:” But why someone can hear it.”

Sir:” Only some of them are listening.”

August:” So my parents can hear it?”

Yes, they can hear you, kid.

    The city was his home

    play by ear

    music pulled them together again

    can't forget the flaming eyes
