                                               Way Back Home

The Chinese lunar new year is coming, and spring festival rush has annually kicked off.

However, news has it that ten of thousands of passengers are kept in railway station, due to the snow storm sweeping across China, especially the northern regions.

Instead of snowing in Guangdong, it’s drizzling everyday, and the temperature has hit the rock bottom since winter, in some places it’s even hitting freezing zero degree. Worse still, the cold air and snow will dwell for another a few days as is reported.

Due to the tough weather, lots of freeways from south to north have been forced to cut off by the authority, like JingZhu freeway (from Beijing to Zhuhai in Guangdong), thousands of cars, trucks, and buses are plugged on the road causing a traffic jam for days. The government has to send lots of people to help, as well as plenty food, water and medicine. Now most of the vehicles and people on the road have been channel off to different places, waiting for the day when snow stops and the road works again.

What is more focused by the media is sea of people kept in Guangzhou railway station, most of them migrant workers heading home for spring festival. Those with tickets, have to return the ticket and wait till the railway traffic works again, and those without tickets, stay there to take a chance.

It’s crowed with people in every corner of the station square, as the official suggests, there are more than 200 thousands passengers kept in GZ railway station alone everyday, let alone those in other passenger stations.

This causes many problems, in public security and health, bringing unprecedented great challenges in management to our government, also to our society.

We are delighted to see, many enterprises are joining the government to fight against this disaster, by donating money, materials and commodities to those people in need.

Regardless the reaction of our government and some other organizations, we need to reconsider and revalue the spring festival in China.

So this set us thinking, is it worthwhile to go all the way for a reunion at this annual “rush hour”?
