(U.N. Day for Women's Rights and International Peace)或“三八”妇女节,是全世界劳动妇女团结战斗的光辉节日。

International Women's Day (8 March) is an occasion marked by women's groups around the world. This date is also commemorated at the United Nations and is designated in many countries as a national holiday. When women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.

International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. In ancient Greece, Lysistrata initiated a sexual strike against men in order to end war; during the French Revolution, Parisian women calling for "liberty, equality, fraternity" marched on Versailles to demand women's suffrage.

The idea of an International Women's Day first arose at the turn of the century, which in the industrialized world was a period of expansion and turbulence, booming population growth and radical ideologies. Following is a brief chronology of the most important events:

      1909

In accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America, the first National Woman's Day was observed across the United States on 28 February. Women continued to celebrate it on the last Sunday of that month through 1913.

      1910

The Socialist International, meeting in Copenhagen, established a Women's Day, international in character, to honour the movement for women's rights and to assist in achieving universal suffrage for women. The proposal was greeted with unanimous approval by the conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, which included the first three women elected to the Finnish parliament. No fixed date was selected for the observance.

      1911

As a result of the decision taken at Copenhagen the previous year, International Women's Day was marked for the first time (19 March) in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, where more than one million women and men attended rallies. In addition to the right to vote and to hold public office, they demanded the right to work, to vocational training and to an end to discrimination on the job.

Less than a week later, on 25 March, the tragic Triangle Fire in New York City took the lives of more than 140 working girls, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. This event had a significant impact on labour legislation in the United States, and the working conditions leading up to the disaster were invoked during subsequent observances of International Women's Day.

      1913-1914

As part of the peace movement brewing on the eve of World War I, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday in February 1913. Elsewhere in Europe, on or around 8 March of the following year, women held rallies either to protest the war or to express solidarity with their sisters.

      1917

With 2 million Russian soldiers dead in the war, Russian women again chose the last Sunday in February to strike for "bread and peace". Political leaders opposed the timing of the strike, but the women went on anyway. The rest is history: Four days later the Czar was forced to abdicate and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote. That historic Sunday fell on 23 February on the Julian calendar then in use in Russia, but on 8 March on the Gregorian calendar in use elsewhere.

Since those early years, International Women's Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. The growing international women's movement, which has been strengthened by four global United Nations women's conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point for coordinated efforts to demand women's rights and participation in the political and economic process. Increasingly, International Women's Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of women's rights.

The Role of the United NationsFew causes promoted by the United Nations have generated more intense and widespread support than the campaign to promote and protect the equal rights of women. The Charter of the United Nations, signed in San Francisco in 1945, was the first international agreement to proclaim gender equality as a fundamental human right. Since then, the Organization has helped create a historic legacy of internationally agreed strategies, standards, programmes and goals to advance the status of women worldwide.

Over the years, United Nations action for the advancement of women has taken four clear directions: promotion of legal measures; mobilization of public opinion and international action; training and research, including the compilation of gender desegregated statistics; and direct assistance to disadvantaged groups. Today a central organizing principle of the work of the United Nations is that no enduring solution to society's most threatening social, economic and political problems can be found without the full participation, and the full empowerment, of the world's women.

Determination paid off. Electricity was partly or fully restored to 164 snow-stricken counties, including Chenzhou city in Hunan Province, after workers reconnected local power lines to the national grid on Wednesday. Portable generators allowed other people to carry on the annual practice of watching the Spring Festival evening gala on China Central Television (CCTV) on Wednesday night.

An epic -- "Warm 2008" -- praising disaster-relief efforts, was penned by leading poets to boost national morale. It was expressively recited and movingly performed by famous artists, TV anchors and entertainment stars.

She starred at a fund-raising gala.

    2007-12-13 08:41:02

Saint Lucia's Day is a Swedish traditional holiday. On December 13th,one of the shortest, darkest days in the long and cold winter,Sweden celebrates the holiday,in honor of Saint Lucia, the Queen of Lights.

On the day, girls in Sweden dress up as Santa Lucia wearing a white dress and a crown of candles. Boys carry a candle and wear a kind of white pyjama. They wear hats that are pointy with golden stars on them.

In Sweden people do not wear candles anymore because before girls caught their hair on fire very often. Today they use modern candles with batteries in them.

After lunch most schools close on Santa Lucia day around noon. It is a national holiday of Sweden. In big cities in Sweden there are beauty contests where some women dress up as Santa Lucia and the judges and the people vote for the Santa Lucia of the year. There are also special foods for Lucia's Day like spicy gingerbread biscuits. In schools people sing Santa Lucia's song.

      As To Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia was a saint because of her kindness and her love. She was an Italian Christian who lived in Sicily in the 4th century. Some people believe she once visited Sweden.

The way she became a saint was that a man loved her but Lucia didn't like him. Lucia's mother asked her to marry the man but she refused,so the man said he would burn her.But Lucia prayed to God to have the power to survive the fire. Because of her kindness her wish was granted. The man then got a sword and stuck it into Lucia's throat.

There is also another story for her being a saint which goes like this.

Saint Lucia was a very kind person and a man loved her very much but she didn't like him. The thing the man loved most about Saint Lucia was her eyes. Then she gave him her eyes. But a miracle happened, she grew back her eyes and this time they were even more beautiful than ever. The man asked for those eyes but she refused,so the man killed her with a knife into her heart.

      Song for Santa Lucia

The night goes with weighty step round yard and round earth. The sun's departure leaves the woods brooding. There in our dark house, appears with lighted candles Saint Lucia,Saint Lucia.

The night goes great and mute. Now one hears its wings in every silent room murmuring as if from wings. Look at our threshold. There she stands white-clad with lights in her hair Saint Lucia,Saint Lucia.

The darkness shall soon depart from the earth's valleys thus she speaks a wonderful word to us.The day shall rise anew from the rosy sky. Saint Lucia,Saint Lucia.

      Happy Saint Lucia's Day!

    在西方国家,每年的10月31日,有个“Halloween”,辞典解释为“The eve of All Saints'Day”,中文译作:“万圣节之夜”。

    "Halloween"

    很多民族都在万圣节前夜有庆典聚会,这又被叫做“All Hallow E'en”、“The Eve of All Hallows”、“Hallow e'en”,或者“The eve of All Saintas'Day”。

Precautions must be taken on this night of enchantment.

On Halloween, journeys must be finished before sunset.

A piece of bread crossed with salt (holy bread with witch- repellent salt) was carried in the pockets of travellers to keep them safe.

Apples, nuts and candles figured prominently in many of the superstitions practised at Hallowe'en

      Hazel Nuts

Girls placed hazel nuts along the front of the fire grate, each one to symbolize one of her suitors. She could then find out who her future husband would be by chanting, 'If you love me, pop and fly; if you hate me, burn and die.'

People believed that the Devil was a nut-gatherer. At Halloween, nuts were used as magic charms.

      Apples

      1) If you slice an apple through the equator (to reveal the five-pointed star within) and then eat it by candlelight before a mirror, your future spouse will appear over your shoulder.

      2) Peel an apple, making sure the peeling comes off in one long strand and then throw it over your shoulder. The shape it lands in will be the initial of your beloved.

      3) If you place an apple under your pillow you will dream of your future husband.

      Candles

Take a candle and look into a mirror whilst combing your hair or eating an apple. Your future husband will appear peeking over your shoulder.
