Coffee, tea linked to lower risk of kidney cancer

Coffee and tea lovers may have a slightly reduced risk of developing kidney cancer, research hints.
The findings, based on an analysis of 13 previous studies, suggest that coffee and tea may be protective against kidney cancer, while milk, soda and juice seem to have no effect one way or the other. Across the studies, people who drank three or more cups of coffee a day were 16 per cent less likely to develop kidney cancer than those who averaged less than a cup per day. And those who sipped just one cup of tea each day had a 15 per cent lower risk of the disease than non-drinkers. The findings appear in the International Journal of Cancer. While the study cannot show that coffee or tea directly lower kidney cancer risk, there are reasons why the beverages could be beneficial, according to the researchers, led by Dr Jung Eun Lee of Harvard Medical School in Boston. For example, they explain, coffee and tea may increase the body's sensitivity to the blood-sugar-regulating hormone insulin, and researchers say that insulin levels determine whether the kidney is healthy or gets sick. Coffee and tea also contain antioxidant compounds that may help protect cells in the kidney from cancer-promoting damage, the researchers point out. For their study, the investigators combined the results of 13 long-term studies that included a total of 530,469 women and 244,483 men. Each study collected information on participants' diets at the outset and then followed them for seven to 20 years. Coffee and tea consumption were linked to a lower risk of kidney cancer even when the researchers accounted for a number of factors known to affect people's risk of the disease – such as obesity, smoking and high blood pressure. "Our results suggest that coffee and tea consumption may be associated with a modestly lower risk of (kidney) cancer, whereas intakes of milk, juice and soda were not associated with risk," Lee's team writes.

Edwin Maher is seen in a news studio of the CCTV International in this file photo. [Agencies]
Living in China is like riding a speeding train, which knows where it's going, but keeps the passengers wondering what's around the next bend. Edwin Maher sees himself as one such passenger. "Four years on, I still find living in China just as exciting as the day I first arrived."
Maher came to China by chance. He picked up China Radio International while searching his short-wave radio in Melbourne, Australia, one day in 2003. On an impulse, he sent off an e-mail outlining his four decades' experience as a broadcast journalist. A few days later, he was offered a job in Beijing as voice coach. "It was a turning point in my life," says Maher.
It did not take much time for another turning point to come. An Australian news copy editor at China Central Television's English Channel (CCTV-9) recognized him in a Beijing hotel. Maher worked for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) for nearly 20 years. He is a well-known and respected weatherman and news anchor at home. This copy editor told his boss: "It was Edwin Maher! I watched him while growing up."
Maher got an offer from CCTV-9, which was then undergoing a major facelift. Maher's debut as the first Western news anchor on China's state broadcaster in March 2004, made him a focus of attention.
Recently, he was in the spotlight again, winning the Friendship Award, the highest honor that a foreigner can receive from the Chinese government. There are half a million overseas talents providing expertise on the nation's development all across the country. Fifty of them, including Maher, were the lucky ones to be recognized by the Chinese government this year.
The award ceremony brought Maher to the Great Hall of the People for meetings with China's State leaders. His favorite is Premier Wen Jiabao who appears almost everyday in the news that Maher presents. He says Wen conveys a lot of charisma and charm on the screen and wonders how he is in real life.
When Wen walked up to him and greeted him in English: "Congratulations and nice to meet you", Maher replied with a gesture to make sure Wen understood what he meant: "I really like your smile." This very brief encounter left Maher with the impression of Wen as a "very natural and friendly man".
"That was the highlight for me," says Maher.
Maher's four years in China include many unexpected highlights which to him are the unknown bends on a speeding train. He sees China as that speeding train, surfing uncharted waters. Since Maher's arrival in Beijing, China has been persistently telling the world that it wants its fast economic engine to maintain its momentum in a way that is different from the West.
As the speeding train from the East rushes into an international system established and maintained by the West, the world wonders what a self-claimed "different China" will bring in the long run. China too does not know "what's around the next bend". Maher's unexpected highlights reflect China's efforts to maintain its uniqueness while integrating into the world system. A good illustration of this is Maher becoming the first Western news anchor on China's state broadcaster.
It was a bold step for CCTV-9 to hire Maher as a news anchor three years ago. CCTV-9 was officially launched on September 25, 2000, and promoted itself as "Your Window on China". Its management team had planned to introduce native English speakers to anchor the newscasts before the official launch.
"We considered employing American-born Chinese or British-born Chinese. Of course, Western faces were not excluded," says Sheng Yilai, director of CCTV's Overseas Program Center. "However, it was not approved."
The whole idea behind CCTV-9 was to break Western monopoly on international news and provide a Chinese perspective on international affairs. Was then, a Western anchor appropriate? However, growing consensus was reached quickly that China should have its voice heard internationally in a practical way.
"CCTV-9 should be able to produce considerable international influence in five years. CCTV should be able to compete with CNN and BBC in 10 years," said Xu Guangchun, then minister of the State Administration of Radio Film and Television in 2001.
To compete in the international media arena, CCTV-9 underwent a series of expansions and facelifts. In 2004, the station changed its tagline from "Your Window on China" to "Your Window on China and the World". The most remarkable change of that facelift was Edwin Maher. CCTV believes that hiring overseas talent was a step forward in raising the professional standards of the channel.
Maher referred to his previous employer ABC, which he regards as his second home, to illustrate the point that there is criticism of the national broadcaster in every country. ABC used to be considered as far to the right or far to the left. "You can never please everybody all of the time," says Maher. "But you can try within the parameters of the system and environment that the broadcasters operate to provide a better standard of news bulletin."
Maher takes the media-State relationship in China as a fact of life and a matter of acceptance: "When you work for an organization, it's like being selected to play in the team and there is a captain in the team and there are rules of the game. You have to abide by the rules. If you don't like them, you get out."
Maher grew up in New Zealand and began his broadcast career in Wellington in 1965. In those days, broadcast media was totally controlled by the government. There was only one news bulletin on radio at 9 pm, most of which consisted of handouts by government departments.
Recalling his early work, Maher says: "The government, realizing that radio was becoming a very popular medium, decided to close down the private radio stations and it was the sole operator right up until the 1970s. It was not that long ago. Then gradually the change came, the system changed and there is private and public broadcasting. Changes always come."
As for the changes in Chinese media, Maher says he has "seen great changes at CCTV-9 in a relatively short period of time". Current affairs programs which were once recorded, such as the daily interview program Dialogue, can now broadcast live, allowing a freer flow of views on controversial issues.
CCTV-9's promotion "CCTV International - Your Window on China and the World" was voiced over by Maher. "Over the past three-and-a-half years, I have seen that window opening wider and wider."

Scientists at the University of Kentucky have created a mouse, which is resistant to cancer, even highly aggressive types based on the discovery of a tumour-suppressor gene called 'Par-4' in the prostate by UK College of Medicine professor of radiation medicine Vivek Rangnekar and his team.
The Rangnekar's research team found that this gene kills cancer cells but not normal cells. There are very few molecules that specifically fight against cancer cells, giving it a potentially therapeutic application.
Rangnekar's study is unique in that mice born with this gene are not developing tumours. Each of the mice grew normally, had no defects and lived a few months longer than normal mice, indicating that they have no toxic side effects.
"We originally discovered Par-4 in the prostate, but it's not limited to the prostate. The gene is expressed in every cell type that we've looked at and it induces the death of a broad range of cancer cells, including of course, cancer cells in the prostate. The interesting part of this study is that this killer gene is selective for killing cancer cells. It will not kill normal cells and there are very, very few selective molecules out there like this," Rangnekar said.
To further examine the potential therapeutic benefits of this gene, the team introduced it into the egg of a mouse. That egg was then planted into a surrogate mother.
"The mouse itself does not express a large number of copies of this gene, but the pups do and then their pups start expressing the gene. So, we've been able to transfer this activity to generations in the mouse," Rangnekar said.
The researchers said that implications for humans could be that through bone marrow transplantation, the Par-4 molecule could potentially be used to fight cancer cells in patients without the toxic side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
"When a cancer patient goes to the clinic, they undergo chemotherapy or radiation and there are potential side effects associated with these treatments," Rangnekar said.
"We got interested in looking for a molecule which will kill cancer cells and not kill normal cells, but also would not be toxic with regard to the production of side effects to the entire organism. We are thinking of this in a holistic approach that not only would get rid of the tumor, but also not harm the organism as a whole. Before this animal study, we published a lot of work indicating that in cell culture, there's no killing of normal cells. This is the proof that it doesn't kill normal cells because the mouse is alive and healthy," he added.
However, Rangnekar admitted that there is much more work to be done before this research can be applied to humans.
"I look at this research from the standpoint of how it can be developed to the benefit of the cancer patient and that's really what keeps us focused all this time," said Rangnekar.
"If you look at the pain that cancer patients go through, not just from the disease, but also from the treatment - it's excruciating. If you have someone in your family, like I did, who has gone through that, you know you can see that pain. If you cannot only treat the cancer, but also not harm the patient, that's a major breakthrough. That's happening with these animals and I think that's wonderful," he added.
The research was published in the October edition of the journal Cancer Research.

Salzburg 'creche' for Xmas-weary men

Women in Salzburg will this year again be able to pursue their shopping with abandon over the Christmas period, free from sourpuss boyfriends and husbands.
For the second year in a row, a 'creche' will be set up in the town centre where women can leave their partners for a few hours so that they can hunt down all those last-minute presents, without a bored and whingeing spouse.
In a large white tent set up on Salzburg's central Herbert-von-Karajan square, the men will be able to play computer games, leaf through newspapers or magazines such as Playboy, or simply have a drink at the bar with co-suffering "shopping widowers".
Between December 13-23, women can "surrender" their partners at the tent's entrance free of charge between 4:00 pm-10:00 pm.
They are given a numbered ticket which they then have to present on their return to collect their spouse.
Salzburg toymaker Andreas Stadlbauer came up with the idea of a so-called "Maennerhort" or "men's creche" last year.
It proved such a success -- around 1,500 men found refuge there from the shopaholic tendencies of their 'better half' -- that he decided to repeat the venture again this year.
Indeed, Stadlbauer has even patented the name "Maennerhort". And with big-name sponsors such as the German luxury sports car maker Porsche, Playboy magazine and Nintendo, he is planning to set up similar creches in Vienna, Hamburg and Munich.
In Germany, where men have a reputation of being particularly averse to shopping, the creches might even operate all year round, the entrepreneur suggested.
斯塔德尔鲍尔已将“Maennerhort(男士托管所)”申请了专利。

Money first, love second
When it comes to love, it is money that talks?
It was love at first sight for marketing executive Lu Yun when he was introduced to his girlfriend two years ago.
But the 28-year-old man from Shanghai has found that when it comes to the four-letter word, it is money that talks.
In fact, it was the subject of the couple's frequent fights - before they decided to "take a break" from the relationship early this year, he said.
"She made it very clear: An apartment works. No apartment, no-go," Lu said.
A recent snap poll conducted online by the China Youth Daily and qq.com showed a growing number of the country's young adults shared the view of Lu's girlfriend.
Nearly half the 8,932 respondents said that money and other financial packages are the most important preconditions for love.
Many young singles are also checking out the financial status of their potential partners before getting married.
Of those surveyed, 85.5 percent said the younger generation paid more attention to financial status when considering potential life partners than previous generations.
Lu, for example, said he cannot afford to buy an apartment.
"The mortgage is about 7,000 yuan ($950) a month," said the man, whose monthly salary is about 8,000 yuan.
"Housing prices are so high and everything is expensive in the city. Marrying a rich man equals a good marriage," he said.
But all is not lost for love.
The survey also found 40 percent of those polled considered true love paramount in a relationship, while 40 percent still believed in love at first sight.

Jet Li
Monks from the real Shaolin Temple show off their skillsActor Jet Li has hit the headlines this week because he has broken the record for the highest salary earned by a Chinese film star. China’s highest-earning star will receive 100m yuan (£6.5 million) for his latest movie, 'The Warlords (投名状)'.The film, directed by Peter Chan is a martial arts drama, telling the story of three brothers) who turn against one another over a beautiful woman. It is set in the 1860s, during the Taiping Rebellion. The other two brothers are played by Andy Lau, and Takeshi Kaneshiro.
As a teenager, Jet Li was a Wushu champion, and won many medals for his martial arts. His fame from martial arts led to his film debut in 1982 in 'Shaolin Temple', having acquired the screen name Jet Li as a change from his real name Li Lianjie.
He has an extensive filmography of Chinese and Hong Kong cinema, including the famous series of films 'Once upon a time in China', about the legendary hero Wong Fei Hung.
However, Jet Li has also in the last 10 years become a Hollywood star, in films such as 'Lethal Weapon 4', 'The Kiss of the dragon', 'Romeo must die', 'The One' and 'Hero'.
Next year his film catalogue will increase again, with his next two films both coming out in 2008. One is the second sequel to The Mummy – 'The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor'. The other, 'The Forbidden Kingdom' will see Jet Li teaming up with the renowned kung-fu and film star Jackie Chan.
'The Warlords' will be released across Asia on 13th December, and hopefully we’ll see it in Britain next year. Although Jet Li has now sworn off doing any more Wushu epics, I'm sure we'll continue to see his work in Chinese and Hollywood films in years to come.

Faced with a tough job market, fresh graduates are dreaming of running their own businesses instead.
But a recent survey has showed that such ambitions lack the required support and remain just that - dreams.
The Shanghai Municipal Employment Promotion Center poll of 1,276 graduates in several universities and colleges in the city, released last Friday, showed 59.78 percent of respondents considered the possibility of setting up a company or at least a small store.
"But they just stop at the 'thinking' stage," it stated.
Respondents put the top reasons for not going it alone down to a shortage of investment and a lack of business opportunity.
They also listed lack of business experience and social networks, the need for advanced study and objections from family members as factors that stood in their way.
More than 90 percent of the interviewees said they would rather take up a job after graduating and then consider starting their own business two or three years down the road.
Guo Bing, a senior student in Shanghai International Studies University majoring in English, decided he wanted to be his own boss last year.
But he is looking for a job first. "If I fail to find a satisfying job, I would like to establish a company in exhibition services," Guo said.
The Shanghai native has some relatives working in a local printing plant.
With their help, Guo hopes to produce exhibition brochures at a relatively low price. He is also confident that his English language skills can help him do well in the industry.
"Social networking is an important factor leading to business success," Guo said.
Guo said that the shortage of graduate jobs is the main reason driving more university students to set up a business right after their graduation.
The parents of university graduates are more willing to help their children start up alone, the survey showed.
"Once you win the support of your family, you have won half the battle," Guo added.

Matt Damon was named as the "sexiest man" alive by People magazine.
Matt Damon, 37-year-old actor, named the "sexiest man alive" by People magazine -- the honor he said was a surprise to him, media reports said Thursday.
"You gave an aging suburban dad the ego boost of a lifetime," he says in a letter published in People’s annual issue, "My 9-year-old stepdaughter now thinks I'm cool -- well, cooler."
Damon, who has a 1-year-old daughter, Isabella, with Bozan, says "all the campaigning" by Clooney and Pitt had finally paid off.
"Unfortunately, after all those years out on the trail, the meet and greets, the fund raisers, the stump speeches, I've finally come to terms with the fact that this is a mantle I wasn't meant to hold." he says in the letter, which was signed "Matty."
"Don't get me wrong, though. I was really shocked and happy (Lucy said I actually blushed) when I heard the news. So I can't thank you enough for that."
Damon won a screenwriting Oscar with Ben Affleck in 1998 for "Good Will Hunting." Both Damon and Affleck starred in the movie.
He has also starred in "The Departed," "Syriana," the "Ocean's" franchise with Clooney and Pitt, and "The Bourne Identity" and its two sequels.
People's "sexiest man alive" list began in 1985 with Mel Gibson. Others on the list: George Clooney (1997 and 2006), Brad Pitt (1995 and 2000), Denzel Washington (1996) and Johnny Depp (2003).

2007-11-19 15:25:11

Engineers last week finished work on one of the world's most ambitious conservation projects: a doomsday vault carved into a frozen mountainside in the archipelago of Svalbard, a few hundred miles from the North Pole. Over the next few weeks, the huge cavern - backed by the Norwegian government and the Gates Foundation - will be filled with more than a million types of seed and will be officially opened in February next year.
'This will be the last refuge for the world's crops,' said Cary Fowler, of the Rome-based Global Crop Diversity Trust, which is building the vault. 'There are seed banks in various countries round the globe, but several have been destroyed or badly damaged in recent years. We need a place that is politically and environmentally safe if we are going to feed the planet as it gets hotter.'
About 500 seeds from about 1.5 million types of crop - donated by individual countries - will be placed in envelopes and about 400-500 of these envelopes are stored in a single box. Boxes will then be stacked like library books along shelves inside the vaults.

Wal-Mart layoffs arouse controversyIvan Hu, working at one of Wal-Mart's global purchasing centers in Shanghai, recently received a surprising notice terminating his labor relationship with Wal-Mart as of November 30.
Hu is not the only unfortunate one. Wal-Mart's recent purchasing center layoffs are leading some to question whether the company is avoiding obligations it faces under an upcoming Chinese labor law.
According to the Law of Labor Contract of China, employers may revoke a labor contract only if the employee loses work ability due to illness or injury, or becomes unqualified for the work even after training or post adjustment, or if the objective conditions taken as the basis for the contract have greatly changed. In addition, the laborer must be given written notification 30 days in advance.
Thousands of Huawei staff "quit"
More than 7,000 loyal employees of Huawei, China's largest private telecom gear maker based in the southern city of Shenzhen, have quit in exchange for the chance to work for the company again. The mass resignation triggered by the company management started last month. Many legal experts believe it was an irresponsible decision to exploit a legal loophole before the Labor Contract Law takes effect on January 1 next year. Under the new law, employees can sign open-ended labor contracts if they have worked for the same company for 10 or more years in a row.
To encourage them to accept the new arrangement, Huawei worked out a compensation scheme based on length of service, salaries and bonuses. The total cost of the package is expected to reach 1 billion yuan (US$134 million).

2007-11-12 16:57:46

A day after Hollywood's writers went out on strike, the major studios are hitting back with plans to suspend scores of long-term deals with television production companies, jeopardizing the jobs of hundreds of rank-and-file employees whose names never appear in the credits.
Assistants, development executives and production managers will soon be out of work, joining their better-paid bosses who opted to sacrifice paychecks as members of the Writers Guild of America. At some studios, the first wave of letters are going out today, hitting writer-producers whose companies don't currently have shows in production."Anyone who's not working on pilots or shows is going to get suspension letters," said one top studio executive.

Whenever the world's tropical seas warm several degrees, Earth has experienced mass extinctions over millions of years, according to a first-of-its-kind statistical study of fossil records.[Agencies]
Whenever the world's tropical seas warm several degrees, Earth has experienced mass extinctions over millions of years, according to a first-of-its-kind statistical study of fossil records.
And scientists fear it may be about to happen again - but in a matter of several decades, not tens of millions of years.
Four of the five major extinctions over 520 million years of Earth history have been linked to warmer tropical seas, something that indicates a warmer world overall, according to the new study published in Britain.
"We found that over the fossil record as a whole, the higher the temperatures have been, the higher the extinctions have been," said University of York ecologist Peter Mayhew, the co-author of the peer-reviewed research published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, a British journal.
Earth is on track to hit that same level of extinction-connected warming in about 100 years, unless greenhouse gas emissions are curbed, according to top scientists.
A second study, to be presented at a scientific convention, links high carbon dioxide levels, the chief man-made gas responsible for global warming, to past extinctions.
In the British study, Mayhew and his colleagues looked at temperatures in 10 million-year chunks because fossil records aren't that precise in time measurements. They then compared those to the number of species, the number of species families, and overall biodiversity. They found more biodiversity with lower temperatures and more species dying with higher temperatures.
The researchers examined tropical sea temperatures - the only ones that can be determined from fossil records and go back hundreds of millions of years. They indicate a natural 60 million-year climate cycle that moves from a warmer "greenhouse" to a cooler "icehouse." The Earth is warming from its current colder period.
Every time the tropical sea temperatures were about 7 degrees warmer than they are now and stayed that way for millions of enough years, there was a die-off. How fast extinctions happen varies in length.
The study linked mass extinctions with higher temperatures, but did not try to establish a cause-and-effect. For example, the most recent mass extinction, the one 65 million years ago that included the die-off of dinosaurs, probably was caused by an asteroid collision as scientists theorize and Mayhew agrees.
But extinctions were likely happening anyway as temperatures were increasing, Mayhew said. Massive volcanic activity, which releases large amounts of carbon dioxide, have also been blamed for the dinosaur extinction.
The author of the second study, which focuses on carbon dioxide, said he does see a cause-and-effect between warmer seas and extinctions.
Peter Ward, a University of Washington biology and paleontology professor, said natural increases in carbon dioxide warmed the air and ocean. The warmer water had less oxygen and spawned more microbes, which in turn spewed toxic hydrogen sulfide into the air and water, killing species.
Ward examined 13 major and minor extinctions in the past and found a common link: rising carbon dioxide levels in the air and falling oxygen levels.
Mayhew also found increasing carbon dioxide levels in the air coinciding with die-offs, but concluded that temperatures better predicted biodiversity.
Those higher temperatures that coincided with mass extinctions are about the same level forecast for a century from now if the world continues its growing emissions of greenhouse gases, according to the Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
In April, the same climate panel of thousands of scientists warned that "20 to 30 percent of animal species assessed so far are likely to be at increased risk of extinction" if temperatures increase by about 3 to 4 degrees Fahrenheit.
"Since we're already seeing threshold changes in ecosystems with the relatively small amount of climate change already taking place, one could expect there's going to be severe transformations," said biologist Thomas Lovejoy, president of the H. John Heinz Center for Science, Economics and the Environment in Washington.
University of Texas biologist Camille Parmesan, who studies how existing species are changing with global warming but wasn't part of either team, said she was "blown away" by the Mayhew study and called it "very convincing."
"This will give scant comfort to anyone who says that the world has often been warmer than recently so we're just going back to a better world," Pennsylvania State University geological sciences professor Richard Alley said.

A man sunbathes on a Hong Kong beach over the weekend.[Agencies]
It's autumn in Hong Kong but the island's beaches are still crowded with sun worshippers desperate to catch the last rays of sunshine before winter.
"I love the bronze color," says sunbather Richard Tong.
A growing trend in East Asia to soak up the sun either on beaches or in tanning salons is worrying dermatologists in the region who say they are seeing a rise in skin cancer, which is caused by cumulative over-exposure to the sun.
The number of cases is low but the tanning trend has raised concern of cancer risks in a region where a porcelain complexion was traditionally considered the ultimate sign of beauty and refinement.
"Asians, including South Koreans, used to think they were pretty safe from skin cancer. However, due to increased outdoor activity, more (sun) exposure and sun tanning, there is an increasing incidence of skin cancer amongst younger people," said Ro Young-suck, head of the Korean Dermatologist Association.
"There has been a huge increase in skin cancer rates in Korean men in particular. We predict it's because while most Korean women usually wear sunscreen while putting on their makeup, men aren't used to this, aren't aware how dangerous it is, and so they don't bother to."
While incidences of skin cancer in most places in Asia are small compared to the United States and Australia, the number of cases have jumped markedly in recent years.
There were 1,712 new cases of skin cancer diagnosed in South Korea in 2005, up from 777 in 1995, according to the Korea Central Cancer Registry. Incidences in Hong Kong went up to around 650 in 2004 from 370 in 1995.
"People who are constantly exposed to UV (ultraviolet radiation in sunlight) won't get cancer immediately," said George Li, a plastic surgeon at Hong Kong's public Queen Mary Hospital.
"It takes a long time to cause skin damage, as people get older there is a high chance to develop skin cancer."
Skin cancer is one of the commonest forms of cancer and is linked to other risk factors like fair skin, light colored hair and eyes, a compromised immune system, genes and old age.

Oven-baked Chestnuts with Sugar
Ingredients/材料:
500g Chestnut/500
45g Sugar/45
30g Water/30克 水
Method/
Rinsenuts and make a slit in the side of each one, using a very sharp knife. Preheat the oven to 220C/430F. Dissolve the sugar in water.
Line a tin foilin a baking tray and place the prepared chestnuts on it. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes. The cut should be split and cracked open.
Take out the baking tray and slowly pour the sugar solution over the slit of chestnuts . Return to the oven and bake for about 5-10 minutes. Turn the chestnuts and bake for another 15 minutes.

A 19-year-old German woman has escaped from prison by hiding in a friend's suitcase.
The fugitive hid inside the large case when her 17-year-old fellow inmate was released from the youth prison in northwest Germany on Friday, Lower Saxony ministry spokesman Dennis Weilmann said
on Monday.
The girl simply walked out of the building with her friend concealed in her luggage, "Our staff are going to make sure they inspect big suitcases more carefully in the future," Weilmann said.
Neither of the teenagers has since been caught. Both had been jailed for theft. The escaped prisoner had less than two weeks left to serve.

He's just a pretty good engineer - at least to his mates back in Britain. But in the frozen wastes of Siberia Neil Smith is a rock legend... even though he has only ever played in a pub band.
The bemused 52-year-old found himself judging a national beauty contest, being interviewed on TV, and even being introduced to Russian president Vladimir Putin. He was also mobbed by a horde of screaming girls demanding his autograph.
Neil, an electrical projects manager from Rotherham, Yorks, was working in the remote Siberian town of Sayanogorsk when he revealed to a local bar manager, through an interpreter, that he once played bass guitar for a local band called Rocco. He said: "Something got lost in translation. Next thing the Rolling Stones are being mentioned and I'm whisked off to judge the Miss Siberia beauty contest as a VIP guest.
"Suddenly I'm picked up in a limo, with crowds of girls and TV cameras and shaking hands with Mr Putin. It was too late to explain, so I just had to go along with it.My mates wouldn't believe me till they saw the pictures."
