A:It was the job of me and my co-director to make one film, the best way we knew how. Our goal was to make it a complete experience but we wanted to feel like the film had much history leading up to it and much history after it. If that means that audiences want there to be other stories from that world, then I suppose that is a good thing. I'm sure there will be other opportunities to tell Kung Fu Panda stories.
问：粉丝们都急切地想知道是不是还有续集？
答：我和我的同事之前的工作是做一部电影，而且尽可能地做好。我们想让这部片子感觉很完整，同时也让片子的前后剧情都有一定空间。如果观众们想继续看发生在那个世界的故事，我觉得是好事。我确定还有别的机会再讲《功夫熊猫》的故事。 Q:I heard a Kung Fu Panda series is up to six films, and is likely depending on the overall performance of the initial film's release. So are you sure now there is a sequel of Kung Fu Panda? If yes, do you have a time table? Or any progress can tell us?
A:I have no idea of any timetables. If the film continues to be a success then I suppose sequels will follow.
问：我听说《功夫熊猫》最多可能有六部，之后看电影的市场表现来具体定夺制作情况。你确定《功夫熊猫》会有续集吗？如果有的话，有时间表吗？现在有进展吗？ 答：目前我还没有时间表。如果电影继续表现良好的话，我想续集也将会继续出现。
Q:Are you satisfied with the box office performance so far? What's your final prediction of the box office worldwide?
A:I think we are doing very well worldwide. I can't predict the outcome since there are so many factors contributing.
问：你对目前的票房情况满意吗？对全球最终总票房有预期吗？
答：我觉得现在全球票房表现很不错。因为影响因素太多，所以我也不能做出准确预测。
Q:A Chinese artist called Zhao Bandi who specializes in panda-related designs suggesting the film should be boycotted. On the controversy, Zhao's complaints has prompted a backlash online, some even questioned whether this is just a publicity stunt by the artist. And the film's opening was enthusiastically received in China. I know you study Chinese culture for years. What's your attitude to those kind of negative voice?
A:I suppose I try to take a zen approach to such negativity hoping that it will all work it self out in the end. I must trust the universe.
问：近期中国有个叫赵半狄的“行为艺术家”呼吁抵制《功夫熊猫》，不过舆论和网友对他不屑和认为他是作秀的居多。而且《功夫熊猫》在中国上映至今的反响非常好。我知道你研究了中国文化很多年，那你对目前中国有极少数抵制《功夫熊猫》的声音怎么看？
答：我觉得我要用禅意(译者按：指清空安宁的心)对待这些消极声音，我觉得这些声音会随时间逐渐消失的。我也相信大众(的判断力)。 Q:When Chinese audience watch Kung Fu Panda, they obviously enjoy it very much, but some of them also have a little thought: why Chinese can not make such a wonderful animated film ourselves?You know Chinese animated film do not develop well these years. lots of critics think them lack of imagination and technology. What's do you think? Any advice? A:It is very hard to tell a good story. It is one of the hardest things in the world sometimes. I would suggest anyone who wants to to keep trying to find you own way of doing of things, your own way of telling a story. This is the lesson Po learns and this is the lesson we as filmmakers learned. That is how you can find success. That is the advice I give any filmmaker. Find your voice!
问：中国大多数观众都非常喜欢《功夫熊猫》，同时有一些人也会心底有一个想法：为什么中国人自己不能拍出这么好的动画片？你知道中国动画近些年发展不是很好，一些评论也认为中国动画业缺乏想象力和技术水准。你是怎么看的？有这方面建议吗？ 答：讲一个好故事挺难的。有时这可能是世界上最难的事了。我会建议人们按照自己的方式来做，按你自己的方式来说故事。这是熊猫阿波从片中学到的，也是我们电影业者一路而来学到的。这就是你成功的方法。这也是我给电影业者们的建议，找到你自己的方式。
Q:Have you been to China? Which part of Chinese culture do you like? Which one is your favourite Chinese film?
A:I have not been to China but would love to visit. I love the art in China. It is very beautiful and inspiration to me. My favorite Chinese film would have to be Hero. It is a beautiful film.
问：你到过中国吗？对中国哪方面文化比较喜欢？最喜欢哪部中国电影？

哈佛校长按照这所古老大学的奇怪的传统，我应该是站在这儿，告诉你们那些永恒的智慧。我就站在这个讲坛上，穿得像个清教徒牧师一样——这个打扮也许已经吓到了我那些高贵的先人们，让他们以为是巫婆现身(校长是女的，译者注)。这会让英克利斯(Increase)和考特恩(Cotton)父子俩(他们反对清教，译者注)忍不住想审判我的。但是，我还是要站在这儿，跟你们聊聊。
你们已经上了四年的大学了，我当校长还不到一年；你们认识三任校长，我只认识大四一个班的学生。那么，经验是什么？也许你们应该搞清楚。也许我们可以互换一下角色，我可能就会以哈佛法学院惯有的风格，在接下来的一个小时里自说自话。
从这一点上说，我们似乎都做到了——不管程度多少。但我最近才知道，从5月22日开始你们就没有晚饭吃了。虽然我们会把你们比作已经从哈佛断奶的孩子们，但我从没想到会这么彻底。

听我的回答。2007年冬天，助理就告诉我要有这么一个演讲。当我在Kirkland听中午饭的时候，在Leverett吃晚饭的时候，当我在我上班时和同学们见面的时候，甚至当我在国外碰见我们刚毕业的学生的时候，同学们都会问我一些问题。你们问我的第一个问题，不是问课程计划，不是提建议，也不是问老师的联系方式或者学生的空间问题。实际上，也不是酒精限制政策。你们不停地问我的问题是：“为什么我们的学生很多都去了华尔街？为什么我们哈佛的学生中，有那么多人到金融、咨询和电子银行领域去？”
这个问题可以从好几个方面来回答，我要用的是威利萨顿(一个美国银行大盗，译者注)的回答。你们可能知道，当他被问到为什么要抢银行时，他说“因为那儿有钱”。我想，你们在上经济学课的时候，都见过克劳迪亚·戈丁和拉里·凯兹两位教授，他们根据七十年代以来他们所教学生的职业选择，提出了不同的看法。他们发现，虽然金融行业在金钱方面有很高回报，但还是有学生选择了其它的工作。实际上，你们中有37个人选择做教师，有一个会跳探戈的人要去阿根廷的舞蹈诊疗所上班，另一个拿了数学荣誉学位的人要去学诗歌，有一个要在美国空军受训作一名飞行员，还有一个要去作一名治疗乳房癌症的医生。你们中有很多人会去学法学、学医学、读研究生。但是，根据戈丁和凯兹的记录，更多的人去了金融和咨询行业。Crimson对去年的毕业生作了调查，参加工作的人中，58%的男生和43%的女生去了这两个行业。虽然今年的经济不景气，这个数字还是到了39%。 高薪、不可抗拒的招聘的冲击、到纽约和你的朋友一起工作的保证、承诺工作很有趣——这样的选择可以有很多种理由。对于你们中的一些人，也许只会在其中做一到两年。其他人也都相信这是他们可以做到最好的一份工作。但，还是有人会问：为什么要这样选择。 其实，比起回答你们的问题来，我更喜欢思考你们为什么会问。戈丁和凯兹教授的研究是不是正确的；到金融行业是不是就是“理性的选择”；你们为什么会不停地问我这个问题？为什么这个看似理性的选择，却会让你们许多人无法理解、觉得不尽理性，甚至有的会觉得是被迫作出的必要的选择？为什么这个问题会困扰这么多人呢？
我认为，你们问我生活的意义的时候，是带着指向性的——你们把它看成是高级职业选择中可见、可量度的现象，而不是一种抽象而深不可测的、形而上学的尴尬境地。所谓“生活的意义”已经被说滥了——它就像是蒙提·派森(Monty Python)电影里可笑的标题，或者说是《辛普森一家》里的那些鸡零狗碎的话题一样，已经没有任何严肃的涵义了。
让我们暂时扔掉哈佛人精明的处世能力、沉着和不可战胜的虚伪，试着来寻找一下你们问题的答案吧。 我想，你们之所以会焦虑，是因为你们不想只是做到一般意义上的成功，而且还想过得有意义。但你们又不知道这两个目标如何才能同时达到，你们不知道在一个大名鼎鼎的公司中有一份丰厚的起薪，并且前途很有保障，是不是就可以让你们自己满足。
你们为什么要焦虑？说起来，我们学校这方面也有错。从你们进来的时候，我们就告诉你们，到这里，你们会成为对未来负责的精英，你们是最棒的、最聪明的，我们都要依靠你们，因为你们会改变这个世界。这些话，让你们个个都胸怀大志。你们会去做各种不平常的事情：在课外活动中，你们处处体现着服务的热情；你们大力倡导可持续发展，因为你们关注地球的未来；在今年的总统竞选中，你们也表现出了对美国政治改革的热衷。 但现在，你们中的许多人迷惘了，不知道这些在做职业选择时都有什么用。如果在有偿的工作和有意义的工作之间做个选择，你们会怎么办？这二者可以兼顾吗？ 你们都在不停地问我一些最基本的问题：关于价值、试图调和那些潜在竞争的东西、对鱼与熊掌不可兼得的认识，等等。现在的你们，到了要作出选择的转换阶段。作出一个选择——或工作、或读研——都意味着失去了选择其他选项的机会。每次决定都会有舍有得——放弃一个可能的同时，你也赢得了其他可能。对于我来说，你们的问题差不多就等于是站在十字路口时的迷茫。
金融业、华尔街、“招聘”就是这个困境的标志，它带来了比职业选择更广更深的一系列问题。不管你是从医学院毕业当了全科医生或者皮肤科医生，从法学院毕业进了一家公司或者作了一名公设辩护律师，还是结束了两年的Teach for America项目，在想要不要继续教书，这些问题总会在某种程度上困扰你们。你们之所以焦虑，是因为你们既想活得有意义，又想活得成功；你们知道你们所受的教育，让你们不只是为自己的舒适和满足而活，而且还要为你们周围的人而活。现在，到了你们想办法实现这个目标的时候了。 我想，还有一个原因使你们焦虑——这个原因和第一个原因相关，但又有所不同。你们想过得幸福。你们一拥而上地去选修“成功哲学”和“幸福的科学”，想从中找到秘诀。但我们怎么样才能幸福呢？我可以提供一个不错的答案：长大。调查数据说明，越老的人——比如我这个岁数的人——比年轻的人感到更幸福。但可能你们都不愿意等。
当我听着你们说你们面前有如何的选择时，可以听出来，你们在为搞不明白成功和幸福的关系而烦恼——或者更确切地说，什么样的成功，不仅能带来金钱和名望，还能让人真正地幸福。你们担心工资最高的工作，不一定是最有意义、最令人满足的工作。但你们想过没，艺术家、演员、 公务员或者高中老师都是怎么过的？你们有没有思考一下，在媒体圈里该怎么生存？你们是否曾试想过，在经过不知道多少年的研究生学习、写了不知道多少篇论文之后，你们能否找到一个英语教授的工作？
所以，答案就是：只有试过了才知道。但是不管是画画、生物还是金融，如果你都不试着去做你喜欢做的事，如果你不去追求你认为最有意义的东西，总有一天你会后悔的。生活的路还很长，总有机会尝试别的选择，但不要一开始就想着这个。
我把这个叫作职业选择中的停车位理论，几十年来我一直在和同学们说这些。不要因为你觉得会没有停车位，就把车停在离目的地20个街区远的地方。先到你想去的地方，然后再到你应该去的地方。
你可能喜欢投资银行、喜欢金融、喜欢咨询，它们可能是最适合你的。也许你和我在Kirkland碰到的一个大四学生一样，她刚从西海岸一家很有名的咨询公司面试回来，她问：“我为什么要做这行？我讨厌坐飞机，我不喜欢住酒店，我不会喜欢这个工作的。”那就找个你喜欢的工作吧。要是你醒着的时间里，都在做你不喜欢的事情，你也不会感到幸福的。
但是，最最最最重要的是，你们要问出这个问题——问我或者问你们自己。你们选择了一条路，也就选择了一份挑战。你知道自己想要什么样的生活，只是不知道该怎样到达那儿。这是好事。我觉得，从某种程度上说，这也是我们的错。关注你的生活，思考怎样才能把它过好、怎样才能把事情做对：这些也许是博雅教育给你最宝贵的东西。通识教育让你自觉地生活，让你在你所作的一切中寻找、定义价值。它也让你成为一个自我的分析家和批评家，让你从最高水平上掌握你生活的展示方式。从这个意义上讲，博雅教育让你自由。它们赋予你行动、发现价值和作出选择的能力。不要静止不动，要随时准备接受改变。牢记那些我们告诉你们的远大理想，就算你觉得它们永远不可能实现，也要记住：它们可以指引你们，让你们到达那个对自己和世界都有意义的彼岸。你们的未来在自己手中。

Thomas Beatie, the transsexual man who made headlines after becoming pregnant, has given give birth to a baby girl today.The birth at a hospital in Bend, Oregon, was natural, according to a source, though earlier reports said that Mr Beatie planned to have a Caesarean section.
"She's really cute, really pretty," the source told ABC News.
Mr Beatie, 34, was born a woman - Tracey Lagondino - but had his breasts surgically removed and began taking males hormones several years ago.
He legally changed his gender, grew a wispy beard and married a woman but retained his primary female sexual organs so he could one day get pregnant.
His wife, Nancy had had a hysterectomy some years earlier.
Mr Beatie sparked an international furore in March after he announced he was pregnant. "I feel it's not a male or female desire to have a child," he later told Oprah Winfrey on US television.
"It's a human need. I'm a person and I have the right to have a biological child."
Before becoming pregnant, Mr Beatie stopped the testosterone injections he had been receiving for his sex change.
He and his wife bought donor vials from a cryogenic sperm bank and he was inseminated at home.
Doctors say Mr Beatie is not the first transgender man to give birth. Writing in March, he said: "I will be my daughter's father and Nancy will be her mother. We will be a family."

人民网巴黎4月20日电 （记者顾玉清）19日在巴黎共和国广场举行的主题为“支持北京奥运 反对媒体不公”的游行示威集会上。最精彩的一幕莫过于留法学生李洹发表的长篇法文演讲。他富有哲理和逻辑思辩的行文，地道的法语，播音员般圆润、激昂、优美的嗓音，流畅而又连珠炮般的语速，让在场的中国留学生和华人为之欢呼，让法国人听得震惊和入神。他们怀疑这是中国人吗？然而，他就是来自中国西安的一名学生。目前就读于里尔第二大学，高等商学院的一名硕士生。李洹同学曾登上法国电视二台，与该台驻北京记者就有关中国问题进行过针尖对麦芒的辩论，他的语言和学识功底赢得了对方的尊敬，为中国人守住了尊严，在留学生中引起了轰动。
李洹演讲结束，似乎成了明星，中国人和法国人争相与他拍照。该演讲法文稿是李洹自己撰写。谈到他稿子的跨度和深度时，他说，生活在这么一种舆论状态下，一有时间就去研读大量中外文资料，差不多都成了西藏问题研究专家了。其动力和激情皆来自于：自己是个中国人，在国外更爱国。宁可让自己受委屈，也不能让祖国受委屈。
下面是李洹法文演讲的全文译文，略有删节。
女士们，先生们，亲爱的中法朋友们，你们好！
我想首先感谢巴黎人民和巴黎市警察局给了我们今天这次机会让我们聚集于此。这是罕见的一次，也是欧洲和法国历史上最大的华人集会。
我想代表从别的城市，乘坐大巴、火车和汽车，从几百公里以外自费赶来的朋友们说几句话。很多朋友没有能与我们相聚于此，但是我想替他们表达他们与我们一样的对中国、对法国、对法国人民，以及对中法友谊的关注。
在这次对中国的妖魔化的扭曲报道事件中，我们，全世界的中国留学生，我们感觉很痛，我们的感情受到了伤害，但是我们不怪法国人民，因为造成这样结果的责任人不是你们，而是一些不负责任的媒体和职业煽动家。
像所有行业一样，记者和媒体有自己要遵守的职业道德。媒体要求公正，客观，对所报道内容的核实，以及评论的适中。无论如何，也不能诽谤和诬蔑，没有证据地责难，扭曲事实。
在对最近发生的事情报道中，一些记者超出了他们原本的报道角色，完全变成了自认为拥有绝对真理的批判家，甚至把事件可笑地简单化。一个弱小而善良的受害者和一个巨大而残忍的暴徒。他们的角色从一开始就这样人为地被分配好了。
然后，记者们找寻各种方式和手段来证明这两个角色。比如说，选择性的阐述历史，认为中国的革命对中国不可分割的一部分是“侵略”，而故意不说95%受煎熬的藏人的黑暗的政教合一，把尼泊尔的警察当成是中国警察，用几十年前的照片来说今天的事情，传播根本没有验证的信息，比如根本没有可信度的所谓死亡人数，以及选用一些别有用心的人的口述。
那些外国游客的描述，和他们拍到的视频让我们看到暴徒对无故路人进行令人发指的暴力，没有一个媒体说这是对无辜者的施暴。更有甚者，一些不负责任的媒体制造并强迫人们接受一个根本没有任何可信和公正证据的“血腥镇压”的假设。
媒体很少邀请中国人在节目中阐述他们的观点，即使有也是把他放在被告的位置上，而另一方的则是在数量上几倍于他的“法官”。是，你可以批评中国政府在一段时间里不允许记者入藏，但是不能捏造不知道的事情。
支持奥运集会
这种处理西藏暴乱信息的方式，是一种媒体暴力，一种意识形态的欺骗行为，一种话语权的霸权，一种扭曲事实的宣传，一种无耻的欺骗。
首先受害者是法国人民，他们是多么的具有怜悯心和博爱，他们相信媒体，可不幸的是，他们被操纵和欺骗了。
西方的信息模式本来还是人们的一种效仿模式，它现在不再是了。没有人有权力操纵大众舆论，不能在中国，也不能在世界上任何地方。这是在所谓言论自由模式中的另一种压制言论自由的方式。
还有一些作为法国精英的政客的思维惰性，让我们无比震惊。
所谓人权，对某些人来说是圣战的号角，和一切有政治目的不负责任的煽动的盾牌，比如说对于罗伯特·梅纳尔（“无疆界记者”组织主席）。为什么此人在官塔那摩监狱里的酷刑不断重复，在伊拉克人被美军士兵侮辱的时候消失了？ 这是不是一种选择性的失明呢？
联合国教科文组织终止了对“无疆界记者”的支持，在一份公告中，联合国教科文组织解释说，无疆界记者多次在无客观所言地报道某些国家的过程中丧失了记者职业道德。
为什么呢？
从互联网上，同时也是我们的罗伯特先生承认的信息中，我们了解到“无疆界记者”的财政支持是源于一些与美国中央情报关系密切的组织。
我们，海外的中国学生，我们很心痛，我们的感情受到了伤害，但是我们并不怨恨法国人。
我们是两个截然不同的世界之间经验与信息交换的桥梁，我们也是这场文化、思想，尤其是政治冲突最先的受害者。
在国内的中国人非常相信我们这些留学生对国外的见解。他们对于国外的认识和印象取决于这个留学生群体的感觉。
面对捏造或者说传递虚假消息的西方媒体的指责，我们这些学生中的很多人开始反击，在互联网上辩论并呼唤报道的真实性。我们都注意到，被某些媒体 “喂饱了” 的有些法国人对于中国有着很深的偏见。
在抵制奥运，抵制中国，所谓自由西藏的叫喊声中，中国人民对西方世界的审视和不信任正在增长。中国政府的努力还远没有达到尽善尽美的地步，说它是世界上最完善的和说它是世界上最差的同样可笑。但我们这一代，我们这些20岁到30岁的年轻人，从我们年幼时起，我们就一直生活在中国生活水平不断提高及自由度不断开放的环境中。
我们很惊讶，在这一切都向好的方面发展的时刻，在这个我们生活比以前更好的时候，国外才有越来越多的人想把我们从所谓的“世界上最大的独裁”中“拯救”出来！ 我想问，你们以前在哪儿？我们这些在西方求学的中国人，我们对未来充满了自信。的确，中国还有很多事情要做，而我们，我们中国人，更是对这些进步的实现有着前所未有的信心。
支持奥运集会
中国有另一种文化，另一种历史，另一个体积。社会学不是一种像数学精确的科学。在这方面，要成为一种 “普遍的典范” 有太多的变数。
来中国吧！来看看一个真实的，完整的中国，一个很多西方媒体不会展现给你们的中国，来西藏吧！用你们的眼睛来见证那个所谓的“文化灭绝”，是否这种灭绝真的存在，是否藏语正在“消失”，那些喇嘛们是不是可以自由的信仰他们的宗教，西藏人是不是比在达赖的神权统治下过得更好！和那些上了年纪的西藏人聊聊，谈谈他们永远无法忘记的“佛教天堂”。我们需要直接的交流，更多的知识交换，我们会继续对此作出贡献！
我们中国留学生支持奥运，支持奥运在中国举行，这个占人类五分之一人口的国家有资格承办奥运会。
奥运是属于谁的？奥运是属于您的，属于我的，属于我们的，属于我们大家，属于全世界的人民。这不是一场政治游戏。亲爱的政客们，反对中国的那些政治势力的走卒们，请停止你们对于奥运的污染。
中国作为东道主国家，想为全世界人民送上一份最好的礼物。成千上万的中国人呕心沥血多年，就是为了这一天。他们正敞开怀抱欢迎世界各国的人们。
当奥运圣火在世界各地传递的时候，所传达的是同一条信息，那就是欢迎你们的到来，中国人民期待和你们一起庆祝这个充满人性关爱的盛会。
当有些媒体提到，这次圣火传递失败是给中国的一记耳光。当代表着爱与和平的圣火，受到一些专门抗议者的侮辱行径时，我认为这确实是一记耳光，但不是给中国的，而是给中国人民的，给法国人民的，给全世界所有热爱奥运的人民的。
很多法国人似乎对中国有一种恐惧，这种恐惧来自于对中国的无知。这也是为什么我们希望你们可以直接和我们沟通，通过我们，热爱并希望巩固中法友谊的桥梁，来进一步了解中国。
中国和她的文化注定了我们爱好和平的本质。自秦朝统一六国后，中国从此结束了原来分裂的状态，成为一个完整独立的国家。我们便属于一个大家庭。

北京的沙尘暴又来了春天正是沙尘暴肆虐之时。可怕的沙尘暴几乎成了大自然给我们的Irresistible Gift。面对沙尘暴的危害，北京将如何去做？
A massive sandstorm has enveloped most of northern China, covering the capital Beijing in a shroud of dense dust and reducing visibility to less than 50 meters in some areas. The storm is the strongest and most intense this spring, and hit China's north on March with fierce winds.
一场巨大的沙尘暴席卷了华北大部分地区，将首都北京埋在厚厚的沙尘中，某些地区的能见度甚至低于50米。envelope：包住，裹住；shroud：遮蔽物，罩。
Sandstorms are frequent in spring, triggered by sudden seasonal temperature changes. It covers the entire city with layers of sand, and air transportation has been affected in the storm-hit regions, which spread from the west to east of northern China including Gansu and Ningxia provinces as well as the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Therefore, many people wonder how much worse the weather will become when the spring sandstorms sweep into the mainland one after another.

In fact sandstorm has posed a serious threat to the air quality and environment. Sandstorms like these, which occurred in ancient times, are widely known among the herdsmen in Inner Mongolia as "Huang-mao-feng," meaning, "wind that carries yellow sand." In recent years, these sandstorms have occurred more frequently, at shorter intervals, and with greater intensity. A sandstorm on December 31st, 2000 was the first one to hit China in decades. Since then, there has been one every month. We cannot help but ask: is this a phenomenon purely powered by Mother Nature, an occurrence over which we have no control?

Under normal conditions, Inner Mongolia provides grazing for up to some forty million sheep; yet, as many as seventy million sheep have been feeding on that area recently. Because of the increasing price of goats' wool, herdsmen in Inner Mongolia have been hustling to raise goats--a ruminant with a twenty-times greater potential than sheep to destroy the grasslands.

In these times, desertification is a primary environmental concern. Unrestricted farming is believed to be the main cause of desertification. Serious destruction of vegetation, dating back from the Cultural Revolution in the 60's and 70's to as recently as two years ago, has prompted the ten-thousand-people-plant-trees activity, with an aim of reducing the incidence of sandstorms. However, such measures touch only the tip, but do not address the basis of the problem. No one ever bothers to care for the trees after planting them and so the survival rate of the trees is staggering low. This simply is not a viable method of resolving the problem.

With the global climate constantly changing, sandstorms are expected to occur more frequently, and humanity will be forced to confront the delayed effects of having recklessly exploited the environment. It is only recently that some of us, who have been pursuing economic goals, have begun noticing the environmental backlash. Perhaps man, who is finally eating his own bitter fruits, will understand that economic development does not have to be at the expense of the environment. Instead, environmental preservation and economic development should go hand in hand. Take herding for example: enclosed herding is better than open herding for preserving vegetation, therefore, there are choices that could be made in this respect, with consideration for the preservation of the ecosystem.

In the future, one of the most noticeable results of globalization will perhaps be environmental destruction. Desertification is not just happening in China, and the problem of sandstorms does not only occupy the minds of Chinese. The entire world is now being compelled to face the repercussions of over-use of the earth's natural resources, including land exploitation in the pursuit of economic prosperity. We are gradually discovering how closely linked is destruction of the environment in one region, to environmental concerns in other areas around the world.

As to China, it needs to place more attention on environmental protection as a growing population and rapid urbanization threaten to wreak havoc on an already perilous ecological balance, Premier Zhu Rongji warned last year.

China has launched a massive 700 billion-yuan ($84 billion) 5-year environmental protection plan to combat a worsening pollution problem. The plan details goals for pollution control that is wreaking havoc on cities and rural areas throughout the East Asian nation. It will focus on reducing air and water pollution, and cleaning up heavily polluted rivers, lakes and seas. It also focuses on greener construction and infrastructure projects.

"Never has the Chinese government put the environment issue in such an important position. It is vital to stability and prosperity of our country and people," Xie Zhenhua, director of the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), said.

International environmental protection bodies have welcomed the plan and said that it showed that China was beginning to face up to its ecological problem. Edison Chen has "failed as a role model" and will quit the Hong Kong entertainment industry following a sex picture scandal.
"I decided to do this to give myself an opportunity to heal myself and search my soul," he told about 300 local and foreign journalists at a press conference here yesterday.
He added he will do charity work for the next few months.
The highly anticipated conference was held on Chen's return to Hong Kong yesterday morning. He had earlier issued a video statement saying he felt pain, hurt and frustration.
The actor/singer spoke in a calm voice, but his eyes were clouded with tears and he sighed before starting.
He said he had not been trying to escape responsibility while he was away, as he needed to show support to his family and loved ones.
He had helped with the police investigation, he said.
He admitted the pictures were taken by him, but stressed he had no intention of making them public.

"The photos were stolen and distributed without my consent," he said.
About 500 indecent pictures of Chen and several women celebrities, including Gillian Chung, Bobo Chan and Cecilia Cheung, appeared on the Internet last month and quickly spread.
They had been taken over a period of several years.
Chung said last week she had been "naive and silly" in the past.
Chen made an open apology for any upset caused by the images. "Most importantly, I would like to say sorry to all the people in Hong Kong. I give my apology sincerely to you all unreservedly and with my heart," he said.
"I know young people in Hong Kong look up to many figures in our society. And in this regard, I failed. I failed as a role model."
"To all the young people in our community, let this be a lesson to you all. This is not an example to be set for you," he said.
"I hope after today, I can have your forgiveness. With regard to everything that has happened, I am deeply sorry. I hope you all will accept my apology and give me a chance," he said.
Chen said he had instructed his lawyer to do everything possible to protect the innocent victims of the case.
