They're downsizing, and I got my walking papers last week.(公司裁员,我于上周收到了解聘书。)
当然,在日常生活中,“I am pink slipped”(我被公司裁掉了)这句话还是不说为妙,我们宁可告诉别人:I dismiss my boss.

Actor Heath Ledger was found dead at a Manhattan apartment Tuesday afternoon in what appeared to be a possible drug-related death; he was 28. The actor was discovered in one of the SoHo apartment's bedrooms at 3:31 p.m., when a ①masseuse arrived for a scheduled appointment and the residence's housekeeper went to inform the actor of the masseuse's arrival. He was found unconscious and unresponsive; the New York Times at first stated that the apartment ②in question belonged to actress Mary-Kate Olsen, but a publicist for the actress later said that Olsen did not own a unit in the building in which Ledger was found. An initial police report also cited by the New York Times said that ③foul play was not suspected and that pills had been found near Ledger's body.
A native of Australia, Ledger shot to fame as a teen heartthrob in 10 Things I Hate About You before graduating to more adult roles, most notably his Oscar-nominated turn in Brokeback Mountain. Engaged at one time to Brokeback co-star Michelle Williams, the two had a daughter but had split in recent months. Earlier this year, Ledger ④wrapped filming on the Batman film The Dark Knight, in which he played The Joker; the film is currently set for release this summer. Further details of the actor's death were not available at press time.
【NOTES】
②in question:上述的…

A national icon is someone who, by the mere mention of their name, will remind people of their country. Whether they like it or not, they are representatives of their nation to the rest of the world.
Ronald Reagan1
Best known for his role as the 40th President of the United States, Reagan started out as a radio announcer and Hollywood actor, having made over 50 films. He realized politics was his calling2 and in 1947 became President of the Screen Actors Guild3.
He changed his party affiliation4 from Democrat to Republican and was elected Governor of California in 1966. After taking over the White House in 1981, he served in this capacity5 for two terms. During those years, he showed the world what America is all about.
Best quote: "America is too great to dream small dreams."
Ernest Hemingway6
Hemingway is considered the greatest American fiction writer of the 20th century. He was an ambulance driver during World War I and a war correspondent during World War II. He wrote about his experiences as an American expatriate7 in Paris during the 1920s, hunting in Africa, and fishing off Cuba.
His direct and sparse way of writing became his trademark, which has often been imitated and parodied8. His works have earned him both the Pulitzer9 and the Nobel Prize. He supposedly committed suicide while struggling with a bout10 of depression, but he still remains one of the most prominent literary ambassadors America has ever had.
Best quote: "All things truly wicked start from an innocence."11
Frank Sinatra12
The single most popular crooner13 of all time, Frank Sinatra had early ambitions of becoming a journalist. By the time he was working as a sports reporter, a second career in singing was taking off. Before long, he was touring with a big band orchestra and embarking on a solo career in 1942.
He was a bona fide14 sensation, selling records faster than they could be printed. Regarded as the greatest entertainer of the 20th century, Sinatra deserves his status as an American icon.Best quote: "A friend is never an imposition."
James Dean15
James Dean was a kid from the Midwest. He studied acting and law in California but quit after getting a taste of the real thing on a TV show. He then moved to act on Broadway and got more guest appearances16 on television. His soft, unforced acting impressed both audience and producers.
He made three movies before his 1955 death in a car crash. East of Eden, Rebel without a Cause and Giant were not only critical and financial successes, but they showcased17 a new kind of actor that people had never seen before. Dean became more than an idol; he became a legend.
Best quote: "Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today."
Michael Jordan
Here's a man who lives the American Dream. Originally from Brooklyn18, Michael Jordan attended the University of North Carolina and proved that he truly was the best basketball player that ever lived by taking his team to the NCAA19 championship. He was soon drafted into the NBA as a guard for the Chicago Bulls. He led his team to six league championships and won the MVP20 award five times.
Also a savvy businessman, Air Jordan's fortune was estimated at $408 million in 2003.
Best quote: "I can accept failure, but I can't accept not trying."
Martin Luther King, Jr.
He had a dream. When he heard about a pacifist in India named Mahatma Gandhi21, and became enamored with22 Gandhi's methods of peaceful protest.
Openly supporting Rosa Parks23 and her refusal to relinquish her seat to a white bus passenger made him a target for his opponents and his house was bombed. But that just served to fuel his desire to see segregation terminated. He became a national advocate for civil liberties and inspired a nation to change its ways. His assassination in 1968 only proved that he was on the right track24.
Best quote: "If a man hasn't found something he will die for, he isn't fit to live."
John Wayne25
The "Duke" was forced to leave college after an injury put an end to his football playing days. He had been working odd jobs at Fox Studios when he was finally noticed by executives. After a lead role in a major production failed to make him a star, he began to appear in low-budget films.
The movie that put him on the map was 1939's Stagecoach26, directed by John Ford, with whom Wayne would have a long professional relationship. The Duke became famous for playing tough guys in westerns and war pictures. He is the personification of the American of those days, a private and honest man of action.
Best quote: "I never trust a man that doesn't drink."
Since his death, he's been spotted at grocery stores, gas stations and diners; irrefutable evidence that his fans will love him eternally and still can't seem to accept his passing. He grew up in a poor home and taught himself how to play the guitar.
Later he recorded a song for his mother, which attracted the attention of a small-time producer. Elvis then recorded a couple of rockabilly28 singles, which became local hits. He finally shocked the nation in 1956 as a performer on The Ed Sullivan Show29--the nation had never heard, or seen, anything like it before. He will always be known as the King of Rock 'n' Roll.
Best quote: "I don't know anything about music. In my line you don't have to."
Marilyn Monroe30Marilyn Monroe proved that where there's a will, there's a way. She overcame a childhood of abuse, worked as a swimsuit model, and eventually became one of the most famous movie stars of all time.
Her performances in films like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes confirmed she had as much talent as she did beauty. She even allegedly had affairs with President Kennedy and his Attorney General31, Bobby Kennedy. Her tragic death on August 5, 1962 was ruled a suicide by overmedication, which only intensified her perpetual allure and legendary status.
Best quote: "Sex is a part of nature. I go along with nature."
John Fitzgerald Kennedy
The Kennedy clan is often considered the only Royal family the United States has ever had. What makes it so is not their wealth or political role, but rather the aura of nobility surrounding them. JFK was the embodiment of this. A Navy officer during World War II, he became a senator in 1952. Nine years later, he became the 35th American president.
His term in office was often dubbed the New Frontier32 since it was an era of change. He put an end to segregation, established the Peace Corps33, and masterminded the resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis.34
Unfortunately, he is often best remembered for his assassination in 1963. For all his youthful energy and magnetism, he represented the quintessence of America.
Best quote: "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."

2008-02-26 09:10:45
1. Yoba!
Do you like to go swimming with us?"
2. Bam chi ga bon-bon. Do you have sex last night?" I have a girlfriend for 2 years, but no Bam chi ga bon bon at all."
另外有一个词 hanky-panky 跟 Bam chi ga bon-bon 很像,同样是指一些暧昧的事,例如: "There's something hanky-panky going on in the restroom."
例如,"Damn-it boy."
4. He is not my type. He is not my type."
5. He is a muscle man. 有些美国女孩子很欣赏那些肌肉很多的男人,她们称之为 muscular type,或是可以说 a muscle man,或是 "He is beefy." 。如果你跟一个老美说"I have no muscle." I am not a muscle man."
I am semi-muscular with 6-pack ab. 6-pack ab 意味着 "six piece of muscle on the abdomen" 就是有六块腹肌的意思,也可以说成 washboard ab.
6. I saw a girl throw herself on him. That girl drapes herself all over him."
7. You can go commando.
8. There is a big hole in my head. Oh! There is a big hole in my head."。
There is a big hole in my head."
9. My aunt Flo is visiting. 所以大家应该不难猜到,所谓的 "My aunt Flo is visiting."
10. I am not gossipy.
例如 "You are so talkative. I can't put up with you anymore." -
不过你有没有married,have you ever been dumped?
In British English when you have a boyfriend or girlfriend and they tell you they don't want to be with you anymore. They dump you--or you say--I've been dumped!
It's probably the most common way of saying someone didn't want to be with you anymore.
下次,如果有人抛弃了你,那就是 they dump you 或者你被抛弃了,就用 you are dumped。
To dump--to dump someone--or to be dumped.
例句:
A: Have you spoken to Kate recently?
B: Yes I have and she's really upset. David dumped her last week.
A: Kate was dumped--no! I thought he really liked her.
A: How are things going with Jake?
B: I don't really like him that much – he's quite boring. I think I might have to dump him.

Ask not what your country can do for you,ask what you can do for your country."
1.锻炼英语的发音,语调与节奏;
2.使口腔各发音部位灵活,增进说英语时的流利程度;
3.使耳朵增加听英语的机会,从而提高英语听力;
So we go forward today,a nation still mighty in its youth and powerful in its purpose."
长句中有短暂的停顿,藉以调和呼吸,这是自然的现象,但停顿的地方必须恰到好处。通常在:1. 有标点符号的地方;
We must do/what we know is right,/and do it/with all your might.
2008-02-16 13:22:11
English is a crazy language.
There is no egg in eggplant (1)nor ham in hamburger(2); neither apple nor pine in pineapple(3).
English muffins(4) weren't invented in England or French fries(5) in France.
Sweetmeats(6) are candies while sweetbreads(7), which aren't sweet, are meat.
We find that quicksand(8) can work slowly, boxing rings(9) are square and a guinea pig(10) is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
If a vegetarian(11) eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian(12) eat?
How can a slim chance(13) and a fat chance(14) be the same, while a wise man(15) and wise guy(16) are opposites?
How can overlook(17) and oversee(18) be opposites, while quite a lot(19) and quite a few(20) are alike?
Look和see是近义词,但oversee监视,overlook意思怎么就是忽视呢;A lot和a few是反义词,但与quite连用,怎么都表示很多的意思呢!
When the stars are out(21), they are visible, but when the lights are out(22), they are invisible.
When you wind up your watch(23), you start it, but when you wind up an essay(24), you end it?

Watch out for John; I'm sure he's a stool pigeon for the police.(防着约翰,我肯定他是警方的眼线。)

Love is ... not sending a Valentine this year, claim green campaigners转载
Forget an extravagant bouquet of roses or an exquisitely packaged box of chocolates this Valentine's Day.
Forget an extravagant bouquet of roses or an exquisitely packaged box of chocolates this Valentine's Day.If you want to be a good lover, start thinking about the impact your romance has on the environment.
Campaigners say the traditional tokens of affection exchanged on February 14 should be ditched because they damage the planet.
Instead, couples should be striving to "enjoy a greener romance" - at least according to a pressure group in Wales.
Waste Awareness Wales is promoting e-cards to try to reduce the waste caused by the 13 million Valentine's cards bought in Britain each year.
Couples are also being urged to make their own cards from left-over wrapping paper.
Other advice includes buying flowers planted in a pot instead of a bunch of cut ones. Those who insist on buying chocolates are urged to buy ones with the least packaging.
Better presents than those involving packaging are "waste-free" gifts such as theatre tickets.
People wishing to cook a romantic meal are advised to check the quantities of food required for their recipe so they do not waste food by making too much. They are also urged to compost any peelings.
Give organic chocolate is another environmental-friendly choice.
Giving organic chocolate helps you to "go green" and stay healthy. Organic chocolates are free of pesticides and are farmed in a sustainable way. Also, scientists have proven that organic chocolate, especially dark chocolate, has many health benefits, including helping your heart and boosting serotonin levels.

Do You Know My Work?(图:齐永斌)Do You Know My Work?
One night a hotel caught fire, and the people who were staying in it ran out in their night clothes.
Two men stood outside and looked at the fire.
"Before I came out," said one," I ran into some of the rooms and found a lot of money. People don't think of money when they're afraid. When anyone leaves paper money in a fire, the fire burn sit. So I took all the bills that I could find. No one will be poorer because I took them."

"What is your work?"
"I'm a policeman."

Aries considers sleep too easy and makes a dare with themselves to stay up all night. Taurus forgot to pick up their silk sheets at the dry cleaner. Gemini's twin just isn't tired. Cancer worries how everyone else is sleeping. Leo is afraid to move around at all, fearful of what bedhead can do to their lovely mane. Virgo keeps getting up to re-tuck the sheets and fluff the pillows. Libra can't quite decide what to wear tomorrow. Scorpio is doing something else entirely. Sagittarius can't stop thinking of all the better things they could be doing other than sleeping. Capricorn already took a strategically planned power nap. Aquarius suffers from a chat room addiction that keeps them up until all hours. Pisces has fitful dreams of past lives. -
