2008-06-18 10:24:38
Bachelor Carl Weisman got fed up of being classified as a playboy, a loser or a commitment-phobe so he set out to find out exactly why he and a growing number of eligible men were steering clear of marriage.
Weisman, 49, conducted an online survey of 1,533 heterosexual men.
He concluded that most men were not afraid of marriage -- but they were afraid of a bad marriage.
"Men are 10 times more scared of marrying the wrong person than of never getting married at all," Weisman said.
"This is the first generation of people who have grown up with bad divorces. People assume there is something wrong if you don't marry but these are men who have made a different choice and not given in to social pressures."
Weisman said U.S. figures showed that in 1980 about 6 percent of men aged in their early 40s had never married but this number had now risen to 17 percent.
Weisman said his online survey found there are three groups of bachelors -- about 8 percent who never want to marry, 62 percent want to marry but of which half won't settle for anything less than perfection, and about 30 percent who are on the fence.
Four out of 10 bachelors did not want children compared to three out of 10 wanting to be a father. The rest were undecided.
But while 72 percent of respondents said they were not afraid of marriage, about half of them said the situation that scared them most was marrying the wrong person.
"It's so important to these men to get it right. My best advice to single women after bachelors is to be patient. If you're in a hurry to get married you'll be frustrated," he said.
Weisman also found that financial issues, both positive and negative, played a large part in men's fear of commitment.

If the Tall Run Things, Why Aren’t Americans Taller?
By Frank Deford
Did you see that Yao Ming got married not long ago? Well, if you were there in Shanghai you couldn’t miss it. After all, he’s 7'6", and his petite bride, Ye Li, is 6'2".
But then, this is telling. Americans are getting shorter. Well, we’re not getting shorter, it’s just that Yao Ming and Ye Li and lots of other people around the world are getting taller. Good grief, Dutchmen now average — average — more than 6 feet.
However, for about the last 50 years, our guys have been stuck at around 5-feet-9-and-change. No wonder we don’t win basketball games against other countries much any more. How can this be? The very image of the American was of that long-legged, rangy, raw-bone type.
Now our most popular sport, which is significantly known as “American” football, features some fat 300-pounders. Maybe the American century1 was really just the tall century. Why shouldn’t we have ruled the world? After all, studies have shown the long and short of it2: Tall men do better in life. They win the best jobs and the best-looking women. And a study at Princeton reveals that tall people are simply smarter than the wee ones. Me being 6'4", I accepted this news with the height of smugness3.
Our two greatest American leaders, Washington and Lincoln, were exceptionally tall, and right up until the end of the American century — the tall century — it was unusual for the shorter presidential candidate ever to win. Indeed, given what a mess of things the shorter choice, George W. Bush, has made of his presidency in the fat century, Hillary Clinton’s main obstacle may not be that she’s a woman, but that she’s shorter than most men.
In sports, though, the best athletes still get taller. Some basketball guards now are the size of centers of a couple generations ago. Cal Ripken4, who just went into the Hall of Fame, might best be known for his iron-man credentials5, but his lasting influence was to prove that a shortstop could be a tall stop.
Nonetheless, honesty compels me to offer this grudging addendum to the Princeton study. That is, it is the little guys who invariably end up running sports. I call it the Coxswain Authority — coxswain being the peewee who sits forward in the back of the scull and just screams at the giant rowers: “Stroke, stroke, stroke ...”
The Coxswain Authority is especially, ironically evident in basketball. Hoop coaches in the tall sport are invariably short guys. Oh, occasionally a forward like Phil Jackson or Don Nelson becomes a successful coach, but the really big guys are still thought of as mindless goons. Generally, we just assume that the little players are the brains6 of the outfits.
As a tall person, I say it is time to end this gross discrimination in sports and let tall people have their rightfully ordained place, smartly running games, the way we run everything else so very well.
1. “American Century” is a saying coined by Time publisher Henry Luce used to claim preeminence of the United States during the 20th century.
2. the long and (the) short of it:总的情况,要点。例:The long and the short of it is that he can’t cope.(总之,他这人拙于应付。)又如:The money isn’t there, and that’s the long and short of it.(钱不在那里,情况就是如此。)
3. smugness /`smVgnIs/ n.
Some of the best brains in the country are working on this project.(从事这项工程的是全国一些最优秀的人才。)

2008-06-18 10:16:50
How much of a millstone is Iraq to John McCain, as he strives to become America's next president Although the Republican candidate strenuously tries to avoid the charge that his presidency will amount to nothing more than a third term for George Bush, his support for the war is the single clearest policy difference between him and Barack Obama. Mr Obama's supporters are never likely to cease trumpeting that, back in 2002, from his perch in the Illinois Senate, he denounced the prospect as a “dumb” adventure which would lead to “a US occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences.”That proved remarkably prescient. And the polls suggest most Americans agree with Mr Obama. A recent poll for CBS shows 62% of Americans believing that the war is going badly, and 61% thinking that Iraq will “never” become a stable democracy.
2008-06-18 10:13:00
US President George W. Bush, scrutinized in the memoir by his ex-spokesman McAllen, is considering writing a memoir of his own.Bush has been silent on former spokesman Scott McClellan's book, which said the White House shaded the truth and conducted a propaganda campaign to make its case to invade Iraq and topple Saddam Hussein.
Asked if he planned to pen his own book after leaving office in January, Bush said it was a possibility.
"I'm going to think about that, yes -- writing a book," Bush said in an interview with Britain's Observer newspaper published on Sunday.
The White House and former Bush aides have dismissed McClellan's book and allegations and have also questioned why he did not speak up if he disagreed with policy decisions or the way events were presented.
Bush's predecessor Bill Clinton wrote a best-selling book after leaving office that chronicled his life as well as his eight years in the White House. He has made more than $23 million from his memoir "My Life."
Bush also said he never saw the award-winning network television show "The West Wing" about a fictitious U.S. president, preferring instead to watch sports and read books.
"I seriously don't watch TV. You know, I watch sports, but I'd much rather read books. And I do. I read a lot," he said.

2008-06-18 09:52:26
New York City Opera has commissioned American composer Charles Wuorinen to write an opera based on Annie Proulx’s short story "Brokeback Mountain," a love story about two US ranch-hands that won three Oscars when it was turned into a movie.
The opera house's spokesman Gerard Mortier said in a statement on Sunday that Wuorinen had accepted an invitation to compose an opera of the short story. It is slated to premiere during City Opera's 2013 spring season.
This would mark New Yorker Wuorinen's second world premiere at City Opera. He also composed "Haroun and the Sea of Stories," an adaptation of a Salman Rushdie novel which opened in 2004.
"Ever since encountering Annie Proulx's extraordinary story I have wanted to make an opera on it, and it gives me great joy that Gerard Mortier and New York City Opera have given me the opportunity to do so," Wuorinen, 70, said in a statement.
"Brokeback Mountain" is the story of two men who meet and fall in love on the fictional Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming in 1963 with their complex relationship lasting 20 years.
The story was made into a film in 2005 by Taiwanese director Ang Lee which won three Oscars. The late Australian actor Heath Ledger, who died in January this year of an accidental overdose of prescrīption drugs at the age of 28, was nominated for an Oscar for his role.

2008-06-18 09:50:07
The heavy ocean traffic (and its cargo) spawned a surge in sea piracy and a new breed of pirates, the bloodiest the world has seen. More than 2,400 acts of piracy were reported around the world between 2000 and 2006, roughly twice the number reported for the preceding six-year period. Although pirate attacks have at least tripled during that time period, the actual number of attacks remains unclear. And nearly every group of government monitoring sea piracy believes that number is seriously undercounted. The Australian government estimates the actual number of piracy attacks is 2,000% higher. Piracy is estimated to cost between $13 and $16 billion every year and could cost substantially more in coming years.
今天我们就来聊个轻松的话题——we'll talk about movies。An interesting topic, isn't it? I'm pretty sure that every one of you has enjoyed wonderful experiences in the wonderland of movies.
Today, you will have a chance to wander in this magic world, and listen to and talk about them in English. Besides, you will found it easy to understand English movies. Well, I see you cannot wait any longer. Let's go!
Now you will hear a conversation between two friends, Ella and Tom. They are discussing which film they are going to see tonight.
When you give your opinions on movies, you may use such adjectives as "wonderful, great, OK, or terrible" to show your likes or dislikes. Many English learners in China do not have much to say in their conversations and lack the ability to develop their ideas fully. For instance, when you and your friend are talking about Titanic in English at a party, you may say It's great. When your friend asks why, you answer It's a moving story. That's all. 其实,如果想深入聊下去,我们可以谈谈影片的story, the characters, the acting,or even the music and costumes。 你可以尝试一步步地get your ideas fully developed。 1 What is the name of the movie? 2 When was it made and by which movie studio?
3 What is the movie about?
4 When and where was the movie set?
5 What is the genre/type of the movie? (romance, adventure, action, science fiction, drama, thriller, Western, horror, costumes, musical, comedy, etc.)
6 Who are the main characters?
7 What is the plot?
8 How does the movie end?
9 What impressed or touched you most?
10 Do you like the theme or the music?
11 Who stars in the movie?
12 Who is your favorite actor or actress in the movie?
13 What did you learn from the movie?
14 What do you think of the camera work?
15 What do you dislike about the movie?
2 Pretty woman
3 My best friend wedding
4 Erin Brockovich
5 There's Something About Mary
6 Vanilla sky
7 Sleepless in Seattle
8 You've got mail
1 Philadelphia
2 The Graduate
3 Rain Man 雨人
4 Kramer Vs Kramer
5 The Shawshank Redemption
6 Legends Of The Fall
7 Jerry Maguire
Sex and the City, Friends
What strange connotations the eggplant has inspired! A Lebanese eggplant recipe is called baba ganousb, which means "spoiled old daddy." Eggplant is also one of the ingredients in a Turkish recipe called imam bayaldi. Translated, this means "the priest has fainted."
Eggplants originated in India and were introduced to Spain in the twelfth century by the Arabs. Before the fifteenth century, the vegetable was used only for decoration, as people believed it was poisonous. In Italy, where eggplant was suspected of causing insanity, it was called mala insana, "mad apple". Later, when people had begun eating the vegetable, Europeans called it the "apple of love", for it was believed to arouse passion.
From apples we move to eggs. Why do we now call this large purple vegetable an eggplant?
As with most vegetables, there are different types of eggplant. The edible part of one variety is small and white. It was named eggplant since it looked as if it were growing eggs. Once the name was established in the middle 1700s, it was also applied to the purple vatiety.
Wouldn't you think that history would have recorded the name of the person who came up with something as terrific as the pretzel? But that's not what happened. All we know is that in 610 A.D. a monk in northern Italy first twisted the pretzel into its unusual shape. When children learned their prayers, he rewarded them with the bread shaped to represent the folded arms of children in prayer.
The word pretzel comes either from the Latin pretiole, which means "little gift", or from the Italian bracciatelli, which means "small arms".
