able形容词

having knowledge or skill; capable有知识或技能的，有能力的

 

场景再现：有很多人老是自以为是，感觉自己能力很强，你可以这么说：
They are able because they think they are able.

他们能力出众是因为他们以为自己能力出众。

短语 be able to do sth.

Have the power, means ot opportunity to do sth.有能力、办法或机会做某事。

 

场景再现：员工拿着病假条去老板那儿请假，老板说这么说：

If you are able to go to the doctor, you are able to come to work.

如果你能去看医生，你就能来上班。

 

ability 名词

Capacity or power to do sth. Physically or mentally

做体力或脑力工作的能力或力量

 

It is a great ability to be able to hide one's abilities.
能隐藏自己的能力是很强的能力。
注：人们不喜欢锋芒太外露的人，所以要学会适当隐藏自己的能力。

 

辨析 ability, gift, skill, talent

Ability智力或体力上做事的能力，这种能力可以通过学习或锻炼得到，也可以是天生的。如果指智力方面的能力时，常用复数形式abilities.

Gift--- natural talent or ability指天生的才能、天赋

Skill--- ability to do sth. well做某事的技能或技巧

Talent--- special or very great ability指某方面或某种突出的才能

 

I gave him a chance to show his abilities yesterday.

我昨天给了他一个施展才能的机会。

 

If I have ever made any valuable discoveries, it has been owed more to patient attention, than to any other talent. --- Newton
如果我有过任何有价值的发现，那也应更多地归功于耐心的注意力，然后才是其它才能。
注：牛顿这么说真是太谦虚了。耐心关注一件事情的人太多了，有几个人能象牛顿那样牛？

注：Thyping拼写错误。就会打字，结果还typing还打错了。

Absence 名词

Being away 缺席；离开；不在某处

 

What is better than the presence of mind in a railway accident? 

The absence of body.
火车发生事故时什么比镇定自若还好？——人不在现场。
注：presence of mind镇定自若；absence of body人不在现场。

 

Absent 形容词

 

1、Not present at sth. 不在场的

Dear School: Please excuse John from being absent on Jan. 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, and also 33.
亲爱的学校，请原谅John 1月28、29、30、31、32、33不能去学校。
注：你写过这样的请假条吗？

 

2、not existing, lacking 不存在的，缺少的

Money was totally absent from my past years.我一直非常缺钱。

 

3、茫然的，恍惚的

An absent-minded professor stood in front of a mirror for two hours, 

wondering where he’d seen himself before.
一个心不在焉的教授在镜子前站了两个小时，想知道他以前在哪儿见过自己。

 

Absent 动词：不在；不参与

 

I am able to absent myself from trouble five minures a day.

每天我都能有5分钟置身于是非旋涡之外。

 

Absorb 动词：

 

1、吸收（能量、热、光、知识）等。

In a front-end collision,[碰撞] the horse will absorb most of the impact.[冲击]
正面碰撞时，马会吸收大部分碰撞。
注：汽车碰撞时保险杠吸收能量，马车碰撞时马吸收能量，这种思维跳跃就是幽默的表现。

 

2、合并，吞并，同化

The surrounding villages have been absorbed by/into the growing city.

周围的村庄已经并入了不断扩展的城市，（我很欣慰）。

 

3、完全吸引住某人的注意力或兴趣

My business absorbed me.

我专心做我的生意，（争取迅速积累我的第一个100块）。

 

短语 be absorbed in全神贯注地（做某事）

I have formed the good habit of being absorbed in eating.

我已经养成了全神贯注地吃饭的好习惯。

 

辨析：absorb, drink, suck, swallow

Absorb动词：表示对光、热、水、气、能量等的吸收，也表示吸引注意力，使全神贯注。

Drink动词：指饮、喝一种液体。Drink sth. in/up (water)表示吸收、吸入水分，也可作“看或听得出神”解。

Suck动词：表示用嘴吸、吮一种液体，或把某种东西含吮在嘴里，也可表示抽出（液体、气体等）。

Swallow动词：指从嘴通过喉咙不经咀嚼吞下食物或饮料，也可用作比喻。

 

The towel absorbs water well.

这种毛巾吸水性很好，（用这种毛巾显着有身份。）

 

The dry soil drank in the rain.

干燥的土壤吸收雨水，（干瘪的脑袋汲取知识）。

 

He stood there drinking in the beauty of the landscape.

Accept及物动词

 

1、接受某事物

场景再现：教堂布告栏里贴出的通知：

The Lord loves a cheerful giver!

We also accept gifts from those too embarrassed(不好意思) to say no.
上帝爱愉快的捐助者！我们也接受那些因为不好意思说不而捐钱的人。
注：意思是不管你是自愿捐钱，还是不情愿捐钱，我们都接受。

 

2、接受（提议，邀请等）

I offered her a lift and she accepted it.

我请她搭我的车，她接受了，（但前提是我不能骚扰她。）

 

If you don’t accept my proposal(求婚), I will lower my standard to get married.
如果你不同意跟我结婚，我就降低标准和别人结婚

 

3、同意，认可，赞同

They accepted the judge’s decision

他们同意法官的判决，（因为法官长得慈眉善目的，不象坏人）。

 

短语 accept sth.认为某事属实；相信某事。

I think you should accept the fact that I’m better than you.
我认为你应该接受我比你好的事实。

 

辨析：accept, receive

Accept 动词：强调主观同意接受

Receive动词：表示客观收到，可能接受，也可能不接受。

 

场景再现：如果别人写匿名信指责你的缺点，诽谤你，你可以很自信地说：

I know better than to accept letters when I don't know who they are from!

我比接受那些不知谁寄来的信更了解我自己。
注：accept letters接受信的内容。Receive lettesr收到信。

 

It is more blessed to give than to receive. 
给予比接收更有福。

注：receive收到了别人送的东西，但不一定愿意接受。
