01.什么是Trip-Hop？Trip-Hop是英伦／欧洲跳舞音乐的一种，它的名字来源是“ Trip＋ Hip Hop"＝ Trip-Hop"，因为它发源自英国的Bristol,因此最早时称作"Bristol Hip-Hop".。由于把把Hip-Hop（其实很多音乐都是架构在Hip-Hop上的...不知啥是Hip-Hop的去看看跳街舞的人, 他们多半是用Hip-Hop音乐来跳的.）节奏变慢(有时很慢很慢),加入一些迷幻的味道,如很阴沉,肥厚的Bass,轻微但迷幻的 合成音效,或是些唱片的取样,有时可能连唱片的杂音都会被"故意"取样进去.所谓“ Trip"，指迷幻，氤氲的药物「旅程」，所以， Trip-Hop是种慢板的迷幻的、有 Jazz感觉的、迷糊的、带点 Hip Hop节奏的 Break beat音乐。它虽然隶属跳舞音乐类，但其迷幻迷糊特色已令它跳一般跳舞音乐所有的明确节拍特色相去很远。 外国 Trip-Hop代表人物： Trip-Hop中公认的铁三角,ortishead, Tricky, Massive Attack. 02.什么是World Music？World Music是西方角度观点的词汇，意思指非英、美及西方民歌 /流行曲的音乐，通常指发展中地区或落後地区的传统音乐，例如非洲及南亚洲地区的音乐，有些地区如拉丁美洲的音乐，则能普及到自成一种类型。今天大家说的 World Music通常是指与西方音乐混和了风格的、改良了的传统地区音乐。非洲的 King Sunny Ade，东欧的don Byron，中国的朱哲琴，巴基斯坦的 Nusrat Fatehali Kahn等是西方乐迷较熟悉的 World Music乐手。
03.什么是New Age？New Age是种宁静、安逸、闲息的音乐，纯音乐作品占的比重较多，有歌唱的占较少。 NEW AGE可以是纯 Acoustic(即以传统自发声乐器演奏)的，也可以是很电子化的，重点是营造出大自然平静的气氛或宇宙浩瀚的感觉，洗涤听者的心灵，令人心平气和。 New Age很多时与音乐治疗有关，不少New Age音乐说可以治病，也有不少与打坐冥想有关，这与 New Age思潮哲学有莫大关系。 New Age音乐通常被目为颇为中产阶级的音乐， WINDHAM HILL是最具代表性的 New Age唱片公司。 New Age代表乐手有 Enya， George Winston， William Ackerman， Yanni， Kitaro等等。
04.什么是Dream-Pop？Dream-Pop是种“梦”般的流行曲，它有一种迷离的气氛，多靠Synthesizers（电子合成器）造成，加了ECHO效果的电结他也是重要的成分，歌唱部分往往很 'Breathy'即呼吸声重，歌词也往往有梦般的诗意色彩。代表乐队有 Cocteau Twins， Lisa Germano， St.Etienne， This Mortal Coil， My Bloody Valentine， Mazzy Star和 Dead Can Dance等。
05.什么是Classical Pop ？Classical Pop是指带古典响乐味道的流行曲，多用弦乐伴奏的歌曲都可列入此类，例如 The Beatles的 "Eleanorrigby"就是。澳洲乐队 Crowded House的一些作品也可列入此类。如果说 Classical Pop，则是指经典的流行曲。
06.什么是Acappella ？ ACAPPELLA是指没有乐器伴奏的歌曲，但凡纯以人声唱的歌都是 ACAPPELLA，不过今天我们说 ACAPPELLA通常是指有多重和唱的那种唱法，连乐器伴奏都由人声唱出。 ACAPPELLA的相反是 INSTRUMENTAL，即纯音乐乐曲，任何类型的歌曲都可以以 ACAPPELLA形式唱出。香港人最熟悉的 ACAPPELLA歌曲是 "SO MUCH IN LOVE"，香港 ACAPPELLA乐队有姬声雅士等。
07.什么是Bossa Nova？ 在“谜”新专辑中传达了了许多自然的、哲学的观念。这个观念的主题就是“为什幺”。《冥界之外》是“谜”一首经典的单曲。通过克里图的声音铺垫首一种不可抵挡的圣歌迭句和有力的旋律。 BOSSA NOVA是种带 JAZZ味道的巴西音乐， 1950年代作曲家 ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM将巴西音乐节奏与美国西岸 COOL JAZZ混合而成，柔和、舒服、轻松、懒洋洋、浪漫乃特色。每两个 BAR的第 1,4,7,11,14拍为重拍。歌手 JOAO GILBERTO的纯厚歌声是 JOBIM音乐的出色拍档， 50年代中期传入美国后大受欢迎，其它着名 BOSSA NOVA乐手有 CHARLIE BYRD,STAN GETZ和 ASTRUD GILBERTO等，最着名的歌曲为 "THE GIRLFROM IPANEMA"。 OSSA NOVA于 60年代最流行，其馀年代亦不断有捧场者。
08.什么是Post Rock? Post-rock是九十年代中期冒起的一种实验性、前卫摇滚乐，多带催眠感觉，风格取自ambient、free-form jazz、avant garde及电子音乐。代表乐队有Tortoise，他们视他们的音乐不是歌，而是不断改变、晚晚新鲜的作品，大部分Post-rock乐队都反主流音乐，也反indie-rock，不过也有些比较pop，如Stereolab等。 Post-rock 乐队例子还有Cul De Sac、Ui、Flying Saucer Attack、The High Llamas、Mogwai、Trans Am等。
09.什么是Britpop？ Britpop虽有个“ Pop"字，但其实是 Rock的一种，源於九十年代英伦，中文可译为“英式摇滚”，这是英伦乐坛对美国 Grunge潮的一个回应，主要是以乐队形式出现。不过， Britpop风格其实十分广泛，如 Oasis是结他摇滚乐队， Blur则Pop很多，而Pulp则接近Glam Rook及跳舞风格，不过他们都被列作 Britpop。 英国 Britpop代表人物： Oasis Blur Suede Pulp Radiohead
10.什么是Dub? Dub可说是将歌声抽离只剩下音乐的Reggae(瑞格，也有称之为雷鬼,一种很有节拍性 ,唱腔特别的南美黑人音乐)。而将Dub运用在 电子乐上,则是将部份歌声抽离,将Bass和鼓声加重,并且加入大量的Echo(回音)等效果。这种技术常在现场表演时,将歌曲重新混音(Remix)呈现。像Massive Attack 的专辑Protection便由Mad Professor从Trip-Hop音乐混音成了Dub版本。
11.什么是Electro? 早在70年代末,80年代初,那时还没有House,Techno...这类玩意儿,电子音乐也较不盛行,只有Electro这类电子音乐而已. Electro可说是纯粹以电子合成器(Synthesizer,长得有点像Keyboard)来发声的音乐,通常蛮轻柔的,且常使用Roland公司的鼓机(Drum Machine)TR-808来发鼓声。德国的Kraftwerk乐团可算是代表。 现在的Electro音色比以前明亮,透明许多。后来一些DJ利用Electro变形成了一种Hip-Hop乐,被称作Old School。现在的Fatboy Slim(流线胖小子)也融合了一些Electro和Old School在音乐中。
12.什么是Jungle? Jungle就是Drum'n'Bass的前身。Jungle的速度比Drum'n'Bass快很多,而且节拍更为 复杂,比较强悍,有时会搭配一些Rap,不像Drum'n'Bass会融合一些Jazz,Soul等元素,听起来比较柔，连"摇滚变色龙" David Bowie现在都搞起Jungle了。
13.什么是Drum'n'Bass? 对某些人来说,Drum'n'Bass的音乐可能很烦,因为Drum'n'Bass很注重在节奏上玩花样,还有Bass的表现, 像是很快很快,复杂的碎拍,以及运用各种不同的电子鼓,或是取样而来的鼓声。因此Drum'n'Bass也是Breakbeat的一种，4Hero为Drum'n'Bass的知名乐团
14.什么是Big-Beat? "大节拍",把Brit-Hop变得更快,节奏更重,更有摇滚的味道,可说是将Brit-Hop改良后, 更成熟的一种曲风,你可以想像一下又重又碎,又有点快的节拍是什么样子。如The Prodigy,The Chemical Brothers, Fat Boy Slim即是Big Beat的"大角
15.什么是Brit-Hop ? 把黑人Hip-Hop的节奏加快鼓声加重,配合些许电吉他,Bass,有摇滚乐的味道, 如The Chemical Brothers的曲风即是。
16.什么是Break beat ? 不像House的拍子Boom-Boom-Boom-Boom那么规律,而是以破碎的节拍呈现,像是切分拍。如在两拍中加入小碎鼓,等等,Breakbeat只是一 个总称而已,有很多种音乐都属Breakbeat,如以下的Brit-Hop,Big-Beat,和黑人的Hip-Hop便是一种。
17.什么是Psychedelic Trance ? 又名Goa Trance,发源于印度的一个小岛上。Goa即为这小岛的名字 ,旋律常带有印度风味，这类Trance的特徵,就是很重视旋律,音符之间的细微变化,且常有重叠的旋律,和高亢的TB-303声音出现，有点Ambient的味道。
18.什么是Trance ? 迷幻舞曲,由Techno演变而来,听了会让你有"出神"的感觉,但还是保有舞曲的律动 ,很注重Bass的表现 ,某些听了会有"催眠"的效果，拍子也是以4/4拍为主。
19.什么是Ambient ？ 听起来起伏不大,但其实一直在做改变,像是长时间的音效, 或是渐进式的音乐编排等等,常会营造出有层次的空间感,所以被称为"情境音乐", 且常对於生活周遭的声音做取样,如人声,汽车声,甚至是其他音乐的旋律...等等。为70年代的Brian Eno所创,是一种很"高深"的电子音乐.后来Ambient也有分支,如Ambient House, Ambient Techno...等等,相信大家从字面上就能了解,其实在很多种音乐中都会有Ambient的影子,甚至某些古典乐中 也有Ambient的味道。
20.什么是Techno ？ Technology, 即表示"高科技舞曲"啦!利用电脑,合成器合成,做出一些特殊音效,这种音乐常常是许多音效组合起来的. Techno的节拍也是4/4拍,但速度较House快,且听起来具重复性,较强硬,较机械化,所以某些人称Techno为"工业噪音",但某些还是会注重旋律的. Techno起源于美国底特律,有三名DJ: Derrick May,Kevin Saunderson Juan Atkins尝试将电子乐与黑人音乐结合,而产生了Detroit Techno. Detroit Techno通常较平缓, 不像一般的Techno那样强劲,可说是现代Techno的起源。

中国改变决定 允许美国航母访港(CHINA REVERSES DECISION TO BAN US CARRIER)

The Chinese government yesterday reversed its decision to bar a US aircraft carrier group from visiting Hong Kong, but the about-face came too late to save the Thanksgiving holiday for 8,000 American sailors and airmen and their families.
中国政府昨日改变先前拒绝美国“小鹰号”(Kitty Hawk)航母战斗群访问香港的决定。不过这一转变来得太迟，已无法挽回8000名美国水兵、飞行员及其家属的感恩节假期。“The ships will not be coming back,” the US consulate in Hong Kong said. “They are 300 miles out to sea and there is a storm in the area.”

WILL WINE MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER?
Depression is flourishing. Less, of course, like a bank of daffodils and more like an irruption of dry rot: hidden, silent, pervasive, and a vast drain on national and universal wellbeing. According to The Depression Report produced by the London School of Economics' Centre for Economic Performance in June 2006, depression and chronic anxiety cost the UK £12bn a year in total loss of output. In Britain, nearly 9 per cent of adults suffer from some form of depression in any given week.
Why is it on the rise? Human misery has always caused depression, and there are now many more humans alive to endure misery than in the past. For those whose lives are not materially miserable, depression can be, paradoxically, a consequence of better education and the global communications revolution combined with a sympathetic imagination. Family breakdown and the hyper-mobility which cuts social roots are further factors
According to statistics assembled by the Samaritans, only 20 per cent of sufferers from depression ever seek medical help. The rest, if they do anything at all other than make the lives of intimates dank, will self-medicate. The self-medication of overwhelming choice is alcohol: the favourite drug of the non-Muslim developed world. The sensation of short-term wellbeing provided by alcohol is inexpensive, widely available and culturally acceptable. Yet alcohol and depression are closely linked, with 40 per cent of heavy drinkers showing depressive symptoms. Given that 38 per cent of men and 16 per cent of women in the UK drink above recommended limits, the size of the problem is unsurprising
Alcohol itself, following the initial rosy flush, is a depressant, and can cause depression in those who would otherwise not be depressed. The advice from the Royal College of Psychiatrists to those prone to depression is unambiguous: “Beware alcohol!”
I am an alcohol worker, in that around two-thirds of my professional life involves tasting, drinking, talking or writing about alcohol, and my experience corroborates the findings of experts in this field.
The social context in which alcohol is consumed can be benficial when depressed but downing half a bottle or more may dramtically darken the hours which follow.
I greatly enjoy entire days spent tasting wine when judging wine competitions for their sensual challenges and rewards. But thanks to the alcohol ingested during the process and the loss of vital fluids consequent on repeated acts of spitting, I usually feel drained and depressed afterwards. The best therapy is glass after glass of green tea. True drunkenness and its aftermath are unredeemed horror, both physical and mental.
Yet there are nuances which sensible blanket advice necessarily overlooks. The balance of evidence is that small quantities of alcohol are physically beneficial, and physical health promotes mental wellbeing.
More important, though, is the understanding that not all alcohol is alike. For me, red wine – and particularly dense, dark, extractive and tannic red wine – will raise spirits, if taken in small quantities, in a no less satisfactory way to that of the neurotransmitter-lubricating SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), such as Prozac, or Citalopram, which are the usual prescrīption. A small quantity of vodka and Red Bull, or gin and tonic, does not achieve the same effect.
The area is under-researched, yet it seems at least possible that this is an additional benefit of red wine's phenolic compounds – those same compounds which are already thought to be behind the other benefits of moderate red-wine consumption in preventing heart disease and strokes, keeping the neurotoxins associated with Alzheimer's at bay, retarding or inhibiting certain cancers and decreasing the likelihood of thrombosis. Phenolic compounds are derived from grape skins – and, when not drinking, I try to eat dark-skinned table grapes (though the quality of the bloated waterballs sold as table grapes by British supermarkets is execrable).
There is something more fundamental and more impalpable at work, too. All of our nourishment comes from earth and sky, and in no other food or drink substance can one get quite the same sense of tasting soil and stones and light as from dark red wine. SSRIs are no doubt a dandy invention but the drug feels alien in the blood, with a strange lurching sensation which rarely goes, whereas a glass of good Madiran or Bandol not only feels wholly tonic but brings, for an hour or two and without unpleasant regress later, a sense of universal connectedness, wholeness and compassion which briefly fills the void.

酒精本身，在让你的脸色开始变红之后，就成了镇静剂，可能会导致本来不抑郁的人患上抑郁症。皇家精神科医学院(Royal College of Psychiatrists)给那些有抑郁倾向的人提出来十分明确的建议：“小心饮酒！”

喝酒的社会环境，在感到抑郁时可能是有益的，但喝下半瓶或更多酒可能会让接下来的几小时变得昏天黑地。
在给酒类竞赛做评委，评判他们的感官刺激和奖项时，我非常享受花整天时间品酒。但在品酒过程中喝下的酒，以及其后反复吐口水所损失的生命液，通常都让我在事后筋疲力尽而且抑郁。解酒的最好办法是一杯又一杯地喝绿茶。真的醉酒及其后果都可怕得无法挽回，在生理上和心理上都是。
不过，明智的普遍性建议必然有忽略的细节。客观地说，少量饮酒对身体有益，而身体健康会促进精神健康。
但更重要的是要明白，并非所有的酒都是一样的。对我而言，红酒——特别是浓郁、深色、萃取且含有丹宁的红酒——可以提神，假如少量饮用，其效果可媲美润滑神经传递素的选择性5-羟色胺再摄取抑制剂(SSRI)，例如百忧解(PROZAC)或者西酞普兰(Citalopram)，这些都是常见的处方。少量的伏特加和红牛(Red Bull)，或者杜松子酒和汤力水都达不到相同的效果。

Jacques Chirac was placed under formal investigation yesterday for embezzlement of public funds when he was mayor of Paris, making him the first former French president to be named as a suspect in a criminal inquiry.

We had a very interesting business english class today, which
invovles some case stdies.The case is about the handling of
products.It tells that a British food and drink compant just
discovered that some bottles of its coffee-flavored drink"Lift"
have some pieces of glass in them.What is woese, bottles from the
same production run have already been distributed and on sale
in six other countries in western Europe, and 50,000 bottles
are currently being shipped to the USA.The managing director
has called an emergency meeting at the company, and we students
played the roles of managers from different departments of the company
by the instuction of the teacher.We six people are grouped in a team ,
and the task is to do the decision making.
After the discussion and some hot debate ,we finally form a consensus.
The proposals follows like this:
Step1. Notify all the clients and distributors to stop the sale of "Lift'
Step2. Hold a press conference to explain but keep reserved on the issue
Step3. Investigate the cause of the event.

Peanuts
Behind our house there lay half a mou vacant land.Mother said:”It’s a pity to let it lie waste.Since you all like to eat peanuts so very much ,why not plant some here ?”That exhilararated us children and our servant girls as well ,and soon we started buying seeds,plouging the land and watering the plants.We gathered in a good harvest just after a couple of months!
Mother said ,”How about giving a party this evening to celebrate the harvest and inviting your Daddy to have a taste our newly-harvested peanuts ?”We all agreed.Mother made quite a few varieties of goodies out of the peanuts, and told us that the party would be held in the thatched pavilion on the peanut plot.
It looked like rain that evening ,yet ,to our great joy,father came nevertheless.”Do you like peanuts?”asked father.
“Yes,we do!”we vied in giving the answer.
“Which of you could name the good things in peanuts?”
“Peanuts taste good ,”said my elder sisiter .
“Peanuts produce edible oil,”said my elder sisiter.
“Peanuts are so cheap ,”said I,”that anyone can afford to eat them.Peanuts are everyone’s favourite.That’s why we call peanuts good.”
“It’s true that peanuts have many uses ,”said father ,”but they’re most beloved in the one respect .Unlike nice-looking apples ,peaches ,and pomgeranates, which hang their fruits on branches and win people’s admiration with their brilliant colours ,tiny peanuts bury themselves underground and remain unearthed until they’re ripe.When you come upon a peanut plant lying curled up on the ground , you can never immediately tell whether or not it bears any nuts until you touch them.”
“That’s true ,”we said in unison.Mother also nodded.”So you must take after peanuts,”father continued,”because they’re useful though not great and nice-looking.”
“Then you mean one should be useful rather than great and nice-looking,”I siad.
“That’s what I expect of you,”father concluded .
We kept chatting until the party broke up late at night .Today ,though nothing is left of the goodies made of peanuts ,father’s words remain engraved in my mind.
