A RESPONSE TO "TO ALL ENGLISH TEACHERS"

2008-01-17 09:08:26 / 个人分类:talk with the heaven

New Roman" size=5>TO MONICA AND KATHY

I agree with most of what you are discussing and what is in Monica's article.
However, things in china are a lot different from that of foreign countries.
I agree with Kathy that the students are greatly restrained by the word limit when they are supposed to write a composition. They can't express their thoughts and ideas clearly. I ask my students to write something down daily as a journal. They can write everything may pop up in their minds and they can write as long as they like. It is ok for them to drop only one or two sentences down for one journal.

For vocabulary, I have reiterated several times here I have been misled by the educational system in China. You can go to any university and inquire into the students' English study, you will instantly find that the priority for a students to learn english is to learn my heart the words. They are so tough a task for students to fulfil. They are like monks, reading books of vocabulary every morning as a mass. I have done the same job. Luckily later on I changed my way into reading english literature instead of only memorizing each word without contextual usage. Nevertheless, vocabulary has helped me a lot in a lot of exams and in reading. As to my daily teaching english, I think we have put most of the time to word learning.

Monica, I respect your help to every english learner here. However since you are from Newzealand, you never will know in what a way chinese students are learning english. What I want to tell you is that English is the most important subject in china. No students can afford to give it up. The main purpose of the students to learn english is to take exams, and then to communicate with foreigners.

Especially in writing, as foreign learners of english, my students including me, can't find the most suitable and adequate words to express what we are thinking. We have to use the words or phrases that are available in our mind to express our thoughts and ideas. So we from time to time may write Chinglish. I don't think we can write perfect english as you  native english speaker may do. I don't know if  you know any foreign languages. If you do, you may make the same mistakes. If we say "hello" "how are you?" and then shut our mouth, maybe you will say that we are speaking perfect english. If we continue talking, then our chinglish will inavoidably been brought to the light.

I have been using english-english dictionaries for a long time. However, I don't think the oxford Dictionary of english is as useful as longman dictionary, which is concise, clear, and with a lot of word usage. So I asked my students to have Langman dictionaries each.

To Piggy,
I agree with Kathy that the students are greatly restrained by the word limit when they are supposed to write a composition.
-------------
In my opinion, students couldn't express themselves clearly not only because of limited vocabulary but also the messy logic. They don't even think how to hit the piont before they start writing. How can we expect they could make themselves understood? Personally, I think logic is more important in an article than word choice when we train students to write, by saying this, I don't mean denying the the importance of choosing correct words, but to mention what we ignore in teaching is to foster students' logic.

As a Chinese English teacher, we should at least make students know about the different thinking patterns between Chinese and English. I personally guess, by doing this can we reduce their using Chinglish.

Piggy, I found that You don't read my article properly...

So You only get half meaning of my article...

Just like Hugh, if you can't get the point of what I am saying, there is no point to show a different opinion.

I don't even don't know what you are arguing for?

I also dont think there is a controversial issue between what I think and you think.

1,

Students can write whatever they want as long as not in the exam.

All the exams will give student word limites....and if you want your students to pass, you need to give them more practice to write sth closely around the topic within a certain number of words.

Kathy's students were supposed to write " Lending money to friends"....but I saw so many using 80% of words saying what friends they should choose.....

Do you think those articles will pass the exam, uh ???

That's why you need to give them word limit...

Most articles I posted here can only treated as casual writing....any of them except the 2 serious ones (one essay, one report) can not be used as example articles for students.

2,

Did I even say ANYWHERE here that "Voc" IS NOT IMPORTANT ?????

Read my articles again, piggy....you didn't even get it....

I only said there is no point to keep momerizing words but not knowing how to use them...

I even suggested a method to kathy in my article "To all teachers" to help all the students to learn new words in the right way.

3,

I know exacly how you guys learn English...

That's why I am here to help..

All I suggested can both help students pass exams and improve their English practically...

4,

Chinglish is fine as long as it makes sense....

But just as Daniel said, you are learning English not Chinglish...

So really your personal choice..

5,

who give a shit what Eng-Eng Dic. you are using....

As long as it is a good one and not too old....all dictionaries are fine...

Don't tell me you are trying to argue with me about which Dictionary is better.....because I think that's stupid...

Again, babe, read my article word by word, sentence by snetence...don't just look at the tiltle and read some paragraph randomly, Okay?

Also after reading, make sure you have a think about before you leave message....

Not to think about what you should leave...but think about " Did I really get the meaning of the article?"
