My views on the argument

2008-01-30 21:05:33 / 个人分类:talk with the heaven

New Roman">As is my habit to browse some of the updated articles here, I occasionally find a hot argument, or a dispute, in Monica’s blog between Ray, a guy from Guangdong Province, China, and Monica, a lady from New Zealand and I want to show my views here.

Firstly, I would like to remind you of the purpose of the founder of the website. Thanks to him, we can meet here and put forward any views on any issues. No matter what other purpose he may have, it is he that made it possible. I don’t think he has founded this website for us to touch upon sensitive political issues and make hot disputes on any of them. The administrator here, as may be the supervisor of all things here, will have trouble if we do so.

Secondly, I would like to remind you of our purpose of building my blog here. I have never had any intention to show off my English here, though it is a foreign language to me. I have to confess that I have built my blog here to make friends all over the world, though till now I have made foreign friends with only Monica, who is a kind and open-minded and pretty lady; to keep a record of my life, which is the very reason why I have tried to find time out of my tight schedule to drop several sentences down here each day, to tell others that if one day when I cease to be, there will be some friends who can have a good memory of me; to use English to think, which is very important to put to use what I have learned, as obviously there is no such an environment where I can speak English so freely. What above said are my purposes of building a blog here. There are absolutely no political intention for me to write anything down here, not for fear of certain political persecution, but because I am not in the least interested in it. Political issues, in my mind, should be the center of discussion only for these politicians, or those who are ardently interested in them.

Thirdly, we should have patience and tolerance to other, especially to those foreign friends. We have several foreign friends here and Monica is one of them. She is from New Zealand, and also quite young. She is only 26 years old. Frankly I don’t agree with some of her points of view on something. However I would like to make friends with her, and that is the very reason for me to grade her as the No.1 friend on my friend list. I am not kissing her ass. She is so kind to have read nearly every article of mine and given me comments and advice. Her help is tremendous I think, not only to me, but also to others. Westerners are quite liberal in giving their views, though sometimes the views are given in a very sarcastic and bitter way. Patience and tolerance from both sides of the argument are very importance for us to maintain a lasting friendship. There is a famous Chinese saying: It takes one hundred years for us to be brought together on a boat trip by God. I don’t know the translation is expressive, but I treasure friendship so much.

Fourthly, if we think others are hostile, we should always bear in mind that what we think to be the hostility may derive from a different cultural background. Different customs and traditions have made us think differently. Our jokes may sound ironical and bitter to others, while in our own country they may arouse great laughter among the audience. Even if our expression in the language is poor, our offer of friendship will bring something for us in return. I have written an article on the misunderstanding between people of different cultural background.

Fifthly, I want to reiterate that we are not politicians. We should feel free to express what we want to say here. But it is no use making hot disputes on political issues. Furthermore, if what we talk doesn’t do any harm to our country, then we should say what we like to say. I think both Ray and Monica love their respective country very much. But we should not take it into everything we may touch upon, for otherwise we will find our talk here too tedious, naïve and meaningless. Country concept, is irrelevant to us here. We are not preachers for our country.

Sixthly, I would like to say something on what Kathy put forward in her article, which is responsible for the hot argument. Education system in China, is backward and with very bad results. Kathy, not only her herself, but also several of her family members, are teachers, so she has the right to say something about the education system. What is more, I agree with her, since I am the victim of the present education system. I love China, because it is my motherland. I love teaching, because I love my students and love to be with them as a job. All my students proclaim that they are heartfelt happy in my class because I am in their eyes, humorous, responsible, fair and square, and teach them in an effective way. Nevertheless, I am rendered a patient of heart attack. Heavy pressure and workload, combine to bring me down. In hospital the doctor said that my heart was as inefficient as a sixty-year-old man. I am only 36. I have strained myself too much in the past in my work. They advised me to change my job. Any Chinese will know that it is impossible to change my job at my age. At school only those who have social background can do less work. I have to do as a common teacher does. What is the worst, once I was given a hint by one of the leaders that I am not a capable teacher. I don’t know what to say.

The students, in many schools, especially in senior high schools, are at school, as Kathy said, from five in the morning and ten at night, with only a day off in a month. What can you expect from them? Personally I think they are only meek, obedient, passive, inert, foolish and unhealthy animals at the yoke of heavy homework and exercises. They are not as happy as when I was young. Though we were so poor, we could enjoy life more. I don’t think it is a complaint to say so. And I have no intention to mind who I may talk to. In actuality I have no courage to say anything I want to say, so here I am telling the truth. I have never kissed any other’s ass. However, I am eager to meet responses.

Though the students and teachers are under so much pressure, I don’t think for them to have a way out. The most advantageous part of the present education system is that it metes out an opportunity to everyone in the society, in the most impartial way, especially to the poor. The equitable chances for everyone who are eligible to enter a university (whether they are eligible or not are largely determined by the marks they get at the college entrance examination.) is the only advantage of the present education system in China.

What above said is my views on the argument between Ray and Monica. What I would like to say most is that the two sides of the argument should calm down and try to get reconciled to each other. I believe that if we smile at others, we will get smiles back. If we smile at life, life will smile back to us.

I hope we can reach an agreement on the idea of China's education system. By this can we fight against the sick situation side by side. ------------

We have the same attitudes towards the current education system in china, so do a lot of other teachers. I just don't know how to change it. You know what a deplorable and pathetic situtation we are in now.

Piggy,

Don't feel upset. I don't mean to hurt you.

I just want to make my opinion clear.

I understand the current situation you (we) are in, and that's why I 'm worried and eager to find the problems in it in order to change it.

That's why I exchange ideas with not only you but also foreigners, as long as you can help to find out  what are the problems and possible solutions. Why not?

We are both teachers. Teachers have a great influence  on coming generation. That's why I argue with you, I hope we can reach an agreement on the idea of China's education system. By this can we fight against the sick situation side by side.

To Monica,
What you said is true. Teachers in a university are comparatively free to express their thoughts. However as middle school teachers, we are simply not permitted to do so. There is just a written rule against uttering any complaints, let alone others. We are bondaged, not free. We have to exactly what we are supposed to do. I have been called a reactionary in a way because I want to show my opinions. I have already suffered a lot for my persistence in doing something against the school rules which I think undue.

To Kathy,

Piggy has missed the main argument point which I and Ray carried on...

Since I made it clearly in my message to him, he has shown the exactly the same attitude as you:

Chinese should NOT feel ashamed to talk about problems in China to foreigners!

So basically, you guys don't have much difference in belief.....maybe you two have different working environment and personalities, that's why you choose different re-actions to the same issues....

To mingming,

Imaging if Monica were not here, how boring we are.......
She is so important for us, as we can learn so much native english....
--------------------

Are you trying to impress me, baby?...thanks...

Leave this kind of messages in my message box next time.....
Monica1981的个人空间 删除 Monica1981 发布于2008-01-31 16:48:53
To piggy for Kathy's messages,

She didn't say anything about feeling ashamed about China and Chinese people....If she said it somewhere, please directly quote it for me, thanks!

So I don't know why you say that to her.......

However, after reading Kathy's messages, I have to say her thinking is pretty western...maybe because she has many western workmates around her everyday....

Some of things she said reflect exactly how we treat each other and look at some issues.....

It is true that Western people don't smile to everyone.....that's why I keep saying you people's messages are full of fake politeness...

It is true that western people always have sth to say on every single bloody issue which make our government so headache.....

It is true that western people won't give a shit to what purpose of this website...they just leave all sorts of messages....you can find political messages on a hookers' website....so funny....

It is also true that western people believe that argument is a good thing....however, I know Chinese (most Chinese) think harmony is always better than arguments ina family....but we believe that only arguments can finally bering the true harmony in a family....

That's why I don't and never take any arument with any perosn here as a negative thing...it is good to argue so that more people will be aware of the issues.....

Say I and Ray both left messages there....when the next person comes in, she/he will read messages from both sides and make his/her own judgement.....and that's called speech freedom..

If only one opinion exists there, other readers can only get one type of messages so they may make the wrong judgement....

Whatsoever, the more you hear, the better you choose.....

I don't think ray harboured evil intentions......Your declaration makes me so sad. I have regarded you as my best friend here.
----------------------------

Of course, he is not.....he is home-schooled but it doesn't mean he is evil....

Reagrding the friendship issues, you mistook what I mean....

You add Ray123 as your friend...but I won't....

I don't make friends with super stupid ideas....

That's why I say we have different opinions on what make a person qualified as our friends...

And that doesn't worry me if he is your friend...none of my business anyway....

We are friends....since we have exchanged opinions on so many issues.....

To Kathy,
I NEVER THOUGHT THERE WERE ANY PROBLEM WITH YOUR VIEWS ON THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IN CHINA.
However, you are only too radical.
If you are so brave, summon all your family members to make a strike, or a protest, rather than sneaking here wailing aloud.
Shame on you for feeling ashamed of your country and your countryman.

your last paragraph,---------What I would like to say most is that the two sides of the argument should calm down and try to get reconciled to each other. I believe that if we smile at others, we will get smiles back. If we smile at life, life will smile back to us.
-----------------------------

I 'm glad to smile to some animal, say, cow , I mean, if I'm in good mood, but I'm afraid if he is able to show me a smile.

To someone who has nothing in common with you, just ignore him, let him be.

You write,----------What is the worst, once I was given a hint by one of the leaders that I am not a capable teacher. I don’t know what to say.

----------------------------
If a diligent teacher like you couldn't satisfy the bloody leaders, who else could??
And if I were you, I would bombard him on the spot instead of saying nothing.
Lukily, no leader of mine has once faced my rebellion for I have been considered to  be a very capable staff member.

you write,--------------Thirdly, we should have patience and tolerance to other, especially to those foreign friends.
--------------------

If a foreigner insulted you, don't be patient and tolerant, beat him to the ground.
If a foreigner criticized you bitterly because you did do something in a stupid or wrong way, that's NOT patient and tolerant if you didn't get angry, that should be GRATEFUL.

To Piggy,

In fact, what you write in this article doesn't match the title of MY VIEWS ON THE ARGUMENT, I couldn't find your supporting details to neither side in the argument, but your view on HOW TO KEEP YOURSELF AWAY FROM TROUBLE WATER.

I feel very very sad then, because according to you, your students love you so much, so I guess you must have a great influence on them, but if the influence is not positive, I 'couldn't help worring about next generation.

Besides, I also find some pionts I don't agree with you as the following.

you write,--------------------
I don’t think he has founded this website for us to touch upon sensitive political issues and make hot disputes on any of them...as may be the supervisor of all things here, will have trouble if we do so.
---------------------------------
Firstly, I definitely don't think discussing educational problem is to touch sensitive political issue, as many professors even criticize it on CCTV, which is broadcasted to the whole world.
I feel safe to talk about education system as long as I didn't shout Taiwan is not supposed to belong to a province of China.

And I also believe the purpose of the group who founded this space is to give people freedom to say anything they are interested, including political issues.
-------------------------------

Political issues, in my mind, should be the center of discussion only for these politicians, or those who are ardently interested in them.

-------------------------

You are wrong, gentleman. Political issues SHOULD NOT BE the center of discussion only for these politicians. Every adult who loves his motherland should keep eyes open for what kind of world he is living in. yes, It is may not be your responsibility to establish and revise the political system, but at least you should care about it, but not turn a deaf ear like an outsider.
I have to say, Piggy, we are teachers who influence possible thousands of students in our whole life. If we don't plant  in their minds the seeds of caring, thinking, questioning and creating a new and better world, our nation will die...
---------------------------

Westerners are quite liberal in giving their views, though sometimes the views are given in a very sarcastic and bitter way. Patience and tolerance from both sides of the argument are very importance for us to maintain a lasting friendship.

I do agree Moni helps you a lot in English and she's a sweet girl in fact and I even envy you rate her as No.1 of your friend, but you know, she's worthy being loved because of her lovely character.
what I don't agree is not only western people give bitter comment, so do some clever Chinese. Bitter comment is far far better than fake commpliment.

To Monica,
It is not bad for you to have had that argument with ray. Now you can understand a lot of life in China.
Most of us are either uninterested in talking about, or unwilling to touch upon politics in case there may be some trouble.

To Monica,
I don't think ray harboured evil intentions.
We can't expect everyone agrees with our opinions and we can't make friends with all the people in the world. We seek and find all those affable, congenial in our eyes to be our friends.

Honestly, the way we define friends are different....I don't treat anyone as my friend and I believe if I do, that's only fake friendship!
----------------------------------------------
Your declaration makes me so sad. I have regarded you as my best friend here.

I also feel very disappointed about it...

And I have decided that if Ray keeps writing all the shits that he left.....I will ignore him....

And meanwhile, I believe it is because he knows exactly what's wrong with his belief but in order to save his face, he has to attact NZ to show that he is winning.....

So pathetic.........

What we can do is to persuade, not shout at them into doing as we want them to do.
