THE SPRING FESTIVAL

New Roman">Today is really a special day for nearly all Chinese, whether they are at home or abroad notwithstanding.

I watched TV until after midnight last night. The programs on TV this specially designed for the eve of the Spring Festival are not as interesting as we expected, although it is admitted by all that it is hard for designers to have met the demands of so many people with different social background, different tastes, and what is more, different education. However, with nothing at hand to do, I have made do with them. What impressed me most among the programs is still the short play acted out by Zhao Benshan, the most prominent short play actor in China. Every word uttered from his mouth seems to be beads with so much humor and intelligence, which have been inspiring me. What is more, I think a lot of Chinese, like me, have been edified by his acting. Zhou Jielun, the most outstanding singer who has been winning the hearts of all youngster at present, didn’t receive as much attention and applause as the young people expected.

At midnight, when the toll for the new year was hit and sent vibrations through to every Chinese, home or abroad, as a sign of the ushered-in of the new and saying goodbye to the past. Everyone stood up and cheered, what ensued was a lot of fireworks outside, which made a lot of noise. After that I went to bed and had a sound sleep until about 10 on the morning next day, interrupted by continual outbursts of fireworks by some fervent adorers of the festival.

Thanks to the rapid development of the economy in China, our life has changed a lot for the better over the past years. Seldom is there anyone who is on the brink of starvation. The main concern of ours lies in the bettering our living standards. I have bought a lot of things in preparing for the festival. So we, my wife, my son and I, simply stay at home and enjoy the tasty dinner and the fireworks and the TV programs.

Unlike what we were when we were young, though we were so poor, things have become so different. At that time everyone longed for the festival to come and then we could have a taste of something we seldom met at table, and could play with fireworks, which was such a luxury for children then. Now we have plenty to enjoy but we lose the interest in it. What a weird thing it is!

As far as I am concerned, I think however important the Spring Festival to everyone in China is, it is only a common one, with nothing extraordinary but an increase of drunken pedestrians or drivers on the road. I have never attached any importance to it since I have grown up and bettered my living conditions.

it is difficult to cater to the interests of all kinds of people in any part of the world.

删除 Faywu 发布于2008-02-18 16:05:17: Every New Year's Eve, my whole family will watch the special programme until the toll for the new year was hit. Though the programme is judgeed worse and worse year by year,the reason of which may be the justice level of commonage is higer and higer.
Thanks to Zhaobenshan &Sonddandan, their performances make the programme more intresting.

The roundest moon is that one you watched in your hometown.
However, wish you overcome your homesickness and nostalgia.
It won't be easy for everyone to have that opportunity to study abroad, so don't let your parents down.

删除 LindaYe 发布于2008-02-15 06:43:16: so envy you guys,still can feel the spring festival air arond you,you know,this time is the hardest time for the people overseas,just like me,lonely,homesick all come to you.spring festival eve enterment is suck and boring all the time,never fulfill people's requirements,at least to me when i was in china,hehe,but now,in the foreign country,in such special night,all the oversea students try their best to see the programm,no matter how disappointed it is,we eager for it,it is the bridge between us and relatives in china,as well as a colourful ribbon to link us and family members.i didn't understand it till now,the programm is of real worth,spreading the happiness to all the chinese,wherever you are,in or out.

There are a lot of dialects in China, Cantonese is only one of them. I can not understand anything if a Chinese speaks Cantonese in front of me.
However Chinese government has been popularizing the common spoken Chinese---Putonghua.
what you know about chinese is putonghua.

删除老曹发布于2008-02-08 09:03:33: Sure, Zhao Benshan is the best actor in China, most of people used to see his acts in Spr Fes. TV program, especially Northerner, some Sourther maybe do not understand the dialect, just like I do not understand Shanghai dialect however I have been here almost 4 years.
