What is Feminism ?
Monica1981 发布于 2008-01-18 19:07:20
It has been about 27 years since China adopts its Open Policy.
Therefore, during the last 27 years, Chinese especially young people have recieved many western ideas.
People say China is losing its traditional culture...I don't think it in that way...I would like to say China is embracing its new culture.
However, will the new part of the culture which you have learnt from western countries be really what it is?
I don't think so...because China has no independent free media and therefore, your decisions and opinions may be biased due to you have NOT heard many different voices as you should do.
I am not going to talk about politics in this article...I am going to introduce the concept of Feminism.
Feminism is a word which Chinese women have heard about but not fully understood. Therefore, if young girls have watched too many American movies, they may get this idea totally wrong. In that case, they will feel very hard to find themselves a position in the new culture of China.
And this is the purpose of this article: to help you understand what Feminism really is.
Let's start with the history of Feminism.
Generally, the history of Feminist movements consists of three stages.
In 1880s, the word feminism first appeared in France (that's why Women are the most highly respected in France). The first stage mainly dealt with the suffrage movement, which was proving that "Women should be able to vote and get involved with politics as men". NZ was the first country which enabled women to vote (That's why 7 out of 12 ministers in NZ are women today).
The second stage is between 1960s to 1980s, which dealt with Sex Revolution. It was mainly against the issue which the bible has taught hundreds of female generations: "Women should not have sex before marriage and can not devoice with their husbands". This stage began with a match in 1961 which was held by all the girls in Oxford University in England. It was recorded that Oxford girls were walking NAKED on the street with various signs saying "Women also need sex!".
The last stage started from 1990s until now. It has percieved many mistakes which women made in the second stage and argues : "Should women keep being a traditional housewife?" Important laws developed during this stage were relating to the topics of "Sexual Harassment" and "Equal employment rights".
-----------------------------------
Today, Some Feminists believe that women should prove that they are able to do whatever men can and should not become full-time housewives.
I agree with some of their ideas. However, I don't agree the idea of competing with men in any aspect. I believe that women and men are not comparable (just like comparing an apple with an orange).
I also believe that Women should be independent Financially and mentally.
What does it really mean?
It doesn't mean that you should become a business woman who can earn as much as a man or even more than a man.
It doesn't mean that you should abandon the idea of being a housewife.
It also doesn't mean that you should NOT mentally love a man deeply.
It means, as an adult, you should be able to support yourself for living no matter you have a boyfriend/husband or not.
It also means women should always keep themselves happy mentaly no matter you are in love, or being dumped or still seeking a boyfriend.
To be specific, girls as the following are definitely not independent fanancially and mentally:
Girls who want to have sex with a guy but worry that she will be despised by others in future;
Girls who always expect to meet a rich man who can change her life over the night;
Girls who abuse her body to have sex with different guys but meanwhile feel bad about herself;
Girls who try to kill themselves or feel less confident after being dumped by guys;
Girls who mentally rely on a man or treat her relationship as her whole life;
Girls who expect men to provide them everything;
... ...
Of course, there are more but I can't list them all.
In China, there are women who are described to "use their bodies to write". One of the books (English Version) I have read is written by MU ZI MEI, a female Cantonese writer.
And I would like to point out that she is not a feminist, she is a slut and loser because she is not respecting herself as a person or a woman. Her behavīors explain the mistakes which the earlier feminists made in the second stage. And the major mistake is "freedom = having as much sex as you can".
Feminism is not who you are but what you are believing.
Therefore, I reckon that a prostitute who enjoys her job everyday is better than girls who try to kill themselves for love;
a single woman who enjoys her sex life is better than those virgins who want to have sex but cannot due to the social pressure;
a happy housewife who love doing housework is better than those business women who always complain she can't find the perfect man.
To me, Feminism is not to compete with men but to have a closer relationship with men.
It is more like self-concious, which means you should know what you actually want and be responsible for yourself.
---------------------------------
In the end, I would like to say:
feminism has no fix explanations. You need to know how others define this word and have a good understanding of its history. Then, you decide how you want to be a 21st century feminist.

How to improve your English
Monica1981 发布于 2007-11-22 17:20:56
Honestly, I can't finish reading any of the articles posted here.
I am not being nasty, just trying to help.
Rule No. 1: Never trust Chinese-English dictionaries!!! If you need one, make sure that you buy an English-english dictionary (The Oxford English Dictionary is the world's most trusted dictionary!)
Rule No. 2: Never do translations in your writing. It does not work if you write sth in Chinese then translate it into English unless you are a professional interpreter. You have to write in English, speak in English and think in English.
Rule No. 3: Never read old English books unless you knows all the English Morden words. Don't use words like haply, thee, or hath etc etc etc...because you are NOT Shakespeare.
Rule No.4: Please read English news everyday because that will really help!
Rule No.5: Speaking and writing are two different things.
Rule No. 6: Don't just write sth in English about your life. You are not the frog sitting in the well. why don't you contribute some ideas about the world? What do you think about the current education system? What do you think about American movies? What do you reckon about the English culture? What do you think about the Arabs in the middle east? Show people that you know something, you have the ablity to think, to argue and to comment.
Rule No.7: Try every single effort to learn about Western countries' culture. How many types of wine do they have? How many types of cheese do they have? What is the meaning of "6 feet under"? How is English sense of humor different?
Rule No.8: Don't find excuses for yourself. "I don't have opportunities to speak to a foreigner". That is not true. If 1.2 billion Chinese all try to practise their English with 1200 western people, I am sure you have to wait for a long time for your turn. You can speak to your own people. Find yourself a Chinese friend who also likes speaking English and give her/him a call everyday.
Rule No.9: Read my articles. And if you don't know what I am talking about, make sure you check it out on google. I am writing sth which the Chinese media will never dare to write. And I am writing sth which will expand your whole world.
Rule No.10: There is no fixed rules to study a Language. English is more than a language. It is a culture, a type of knowledge, and a whole new world! The eagerness to know more is the priority before any learning!
Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you
will get from it!
