But since it is solid-looking generals who have reduced Pakistan to this dire pass, Mr Zardari deserves, if not the benefit of the doubt, then at least the help due the constitutionally elected leader of a country of 165m people that is,or should be, a vital NATO ally in the war in Afghanistan. In return, he needs to show that he really does have at heart the national interest rather than self-aggrandisement or self-enrichment.

因为不知道上下文，但根据我的理解，应该是说，这位新领导人因为是民选的，符合美国的民主价值观，并且在阿富汗战争中巴基斯坦对美国是说一不二，因此美国应该帮助这位民选出的领导人。You are welcome
