  • Learning to be a good mother

    2009-4-24

As a mother of a 3-year old girl, I am learning to be a good mother.

Maybe I should know the “what” before I answer “how”. Because “what” is the aim and destination, and “how” is the way. The education of children is a systematic project, and it is like to build a building, the base determine the height.

It is said the education a people received in his first 3 years is critical for his whole life. In this period, the character is forming and the value system and the way of thinking is established. Children learn from the people they live with and contact in everyday life, such as the parents, the kindergarten teachers, the kids in their classes. The behavīor of the “educators” is the model of the children. They tend to follow them.

So If I hope my girl to be a tender, patient and happy girl, I must be tender, patient and with a smile in face. But actually, I’m not always so good as that. I got angry with her and shouted at her when she did not do as what I told her, and I lost temper when she could not sit at the table and finished eating her meal by herself time and time again. I do not know how to keep happy all time and even just when I am with her.. How could I be a good model of my girl?

Sometime, I really got angry and disappointed with myself. I am not a good mother, I can’t spend enough time companying her. I am not so excellent to be a model of a smart girl. I don’t know how to dance, and I have no idea of any of a music instruments. I do not have enough ideas in taking good care of her and make her a winner in this society of violent competitive.

Then what can I do ?.

    China and Tibet

    No middle way for China

    Mar 10th 2009

After 50 years in exile, the Dalai Lama seems close to despair

    AP/Reuters

MARCH is the cruellest month in Tibet, breeding protests on the roof of the world, each of which in turn creates an anniversary to remember and mourn. As the Dalai Lama, Tibetans’ spiritual leader, put it in a speech on Tuesday March 10th in Dharamsala, his seat in exile in northern India, it is a time “to pay tribute and offer our prayers for all those who died, were tortured and suffered tremendous hardships…for the cause of Tibet”.

His speech included the offers of friendship and conciliation to China with which he usually tempers criticism of its rule. But much of it was angry and pessimistic in tone. It reads like the exasperated outpouring of a man despairing of the compromise he himself continues to promote. The Dalai Lama also reiterated the claim for an autonomous Tibetan homeland that extends beyond what China calls the Tibet Autonomous Region, into other parts of China.

In March 50 years ago an uprising against Chinese rule led to his flight into exile with tens of thousands of his followers. In 1989 commemorative protests in Lhasa were bloodily suppressed and martial law briefly declared. Last year saw an outbreak of vicious rioting in the Tibetan capital, directed at ethnic-Han Chinese and symbols of their commercial dominance.

The region is still suffering from the crackdown that ensued, in which, the Dalai Lama claimed, Tibetans “live in constant fear, and the Chinese authorities remain constantly suspicious of them…In short, the Tibetan people are regarded like criminals deserving to be put to death.”

The unusually harsh words from the Dalai Lama reflect both the bleakness of conditions in Tibet at the moment, and the poor prospects for political progress. Human Rights Watch, a monitoring and lobbying group, this week reported that there were thousands of arbitrary arrests after last year’s unrest and that hundreds of detainees remain unaccounted for.

To forestall protests during the anniversary season, the Chinese government has deployed a massive security presence both in the autonomous region and in the neighbouring provinces of Sichuan and Qinghai. Foreigners have been largely excluded from the region; the mobile-telephone network in Lhasa is undergoing “system maintenance”; and some websites have become inaccessible.

Exile groups have reported protests in some places, and in one part of Qinghai two small bombs damaged police vehicles. But the precautions are such that it seems unlikely that large-scale protests could erupt.

But those precautions themselves show how even the Chinese government realises the extent of Tibetan unhappiness with its rule. It continues to blame this on the influence of the Dalai Lama himself. It likes to harp on the feudal serfdom of historic Tibet, and is even marking March 28th as “Emancipation from Serfdom” day.

Yet the Dalai Lama has democratised his “government-in-exile”, and remains more moderate than many of his followers. Not only does he accept Chinese sovereignty, arguing instead for a “middle way” of genuine autonomy within China—a compromise he has repeatedly to defend from the criticism of more radical Tibetans that it is leading nowhere. Also, the Dalai Lama is unwavering in his opposition to violence.

Last year China did resume a sporadic and desultory dialogue with his representatives. They reported no hint of flexibility from China. China’s unspoken hope is presumably that with the passing of the Dalai Lama, who is 73, Tibetans will lose both their international figurehead and their internal unity. However, China will also lose perhaps its best and last hope of reconciliation with the Tibetan people it claims as its own.

  • May you a happy holiday !

    2008-9-28

The 7-day holiday is around the corner again, and what's your plan ? Travelling to a longing for places? Staying at home and having a big rest? Studying in a training school to charge up yourself? or shopping in the discount season? Anyhow,May you a happy and significant holiday!

I am expecting the holiday because I really want a break from the boring bus-shift life. I want to stay at home and enjoy the time with my families, to do exercise in the sports field rather than to be jammed in the crowded bus in the beautiful early morning. I want to enjoy a one or two-day trip in the countyside with my baby. I plan to read an interesting book and meet some friends in the free days.

Er, too much ideas for the coming holiday, and I hope I can carry out my plan and have an good holiday!

Again, happy holiday  to you all !

  • Problems Outbreak in the Areas we do not pay Attention to

    2008-9-19

I went to see the dentists the fifth time this year today. I always have confidence in my own health, I ate the green food, drink clean boiled water, do  exercise regularly, go to sleep at the set time and have a open-hearted mind, which will ensure my body and mentle  health as the saying of the doctor. I never thought there were problems in my mouth, but it did.I have 3 teeth mend and one redone just in the few months.Seeing the dentists is a painstaking thing--long time waiting, sore in the teeth, blooded watering mouth and the postache...That's really bad.

But problems do outbreak in the areas we do not pay attention to.

The baby milk food , even the liquid milk for our daily comsuption, who have ever thought they should have mixed with industry chemical materials? Who have ever thought the well-known national brand SANLU, MENGLU,YILI and BRIGHT DIATY would be the leading actors f the scandal? It is really out of the expection. It's only an accident? I will say NO.There must be some underground rules in the milk industry, which the government does not pay attention to, as well as the  the puplic who take it grant that the milk must be good and safe to the health.

Maybe it's time to roll, to give attention to the virgin areas, both the government , you and I !

  • about financial crisis

    2008-9-17

Moral hazard needs to be faced. There is an inherent contradiction when financial entities are permitted to reap extraodinary profits and manage vast assets and the, when conditions change, are declared too large to be permitted to fail, requiring taxpayer's bailouts. Fiancial institutions, whether investment banks or hedge funds, need oversight in a way that protects the taxpayer's interest.

From Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems, Vol.12, No.3, June 2003

    I. INTRODUCTION

SINCE this is a personal commentary, I will use the first person, something that no proper writer of scientific dis-course would ever do. As an author of many technical papers over my 35-year academic career, I have too often felt the anx-iety of opening that envelope from the journal editor, which, from its bulk, obviously contains my precious manuscrīpt, re-turned to me for either minor revision, massive rework, or—the ultimate wound—assignment to the manuscrīptal trashbin.

Now, having spent some 17 years on the opposite side of the table, my cumulative experience with many manuscrīpts and almost equally many unhappy authors is that the primary reason reviewers attack certain manuscrīpts is that those manuscrīpts are genuinely flawed. Many, if not most authors won’t agree, at least not at first. So I thought it would be helpful to authors if I were to set down some practical suggestions for preventing the reviewer’s axe from giving the authors a whack.

A scientific manuscrīpt is intended to communicate new in-formation and to teach new material to a willing audience. Many authors forget this simple fact; rather, they view the writing process as an opportunity to bolster their own egos and impress the reader, even discomfit the reader somewhat, either with too much material or too little. Since there are many different styles of paper, I will select a hypothetical example of an experimental paper in which the authors make a minor advance in an estab-lished experimental method, and they then use this method to obtain some new results that are to be compared with a model Digital Object Identifier .1109/JMEMS.2003.814319 that is also a minor modification of already published work. Along the way, some unusual behavīor is observed that the mod-ified model cannot explain. The authors believe that they under-stand why this behavīor is observed, and wish to propose their explanation, even though they have not yet done the definitive experiments to prove their hypothesis.

From Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems, Vol.12, No.3, June 2003

Editor’s Note: Stephen D. Senturia has been a member of the Board of Editors for IEEE/ASME JMEMS since the journal’s first issue in 1992 and was named a Senior Editor in 1998. This experience, coupled with his service from 1985–1995 as the Solid-State Sensors Editor for the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRON DEVICES, adds up to 17 years in an editor’s chair. Over the years, Steve has kept mental notes on the myriad of problems that authors have with reviewers and has been inspired to compile the following “advice to the author” about ways to keep reviewers satisfied; hence, to keep them “at bay.”

IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON DEVICES Solid-State Sensors
Abstract—Based on his many years of experience, a JMEMS ed-itor provides guidelines for authors that will, if followed, greatly reduce the risk of a devastatingly negative result from the review process. The premise is that there are certain things that rightfully anger reviewers, and, once angered, the reviewers become both negative and aggressive in their judgments—hence, the imagery of “the reviewer’s axe” and how to avoid it.

    2008-8-22

    Jamaican secrets

from August 19, 2008 China Daily

New Zealand's biggest free-to-air broadcaster TVNZ said the explanations for Jamaica's success in producing the fastest man and three fastest women at the Olympics range from the power of root vegetables to the study of genes.

Jamaica, an island of 2.6 million people, has made remarkable achievements on the tracks of Beijing's Bird's Nest and let the yellow, green and black flag fly with pride.

Once known for being the land of laid-back reggae culture, Jamaica's athletes are giving their country a new image as the island of power and pace and many are asking the question - why?

"It's part of the natural ability of Jamaicans," Jamaican Sports Minister Olivia Grange told Reuters when asked the question recently.

Men's 100-meter gold medalist Usain Bolt's father credited the local yam for his son's success and while that might raise smiles there are many on the Caribbean island who believe their diet - full of root vegetables and herbs - is behind the pace of their youth.

The popularly held idea among Jamaicans that they are born quick has been given some academic support by Professor Errol Morrison of the island's University of Technology.

Morrison told the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper that research conducted with the University of Glasgow has identified a special component, called Actinen A, found in the "fast twitch fibres" in muscles.

Morrison says the gene is present in a disproportionately high number of Jamaicans and others of West African descent.

"What it says to us is what is happening is not a flash in the pan, but there will be many potential Asafa Powells, Sherone Simpsons and Sherikas (Sherika Williams), because the genetic predisposition is there," he added.

"The question is always there. What is it, nature or nurture, that makes us so good? The answer seems to be coming that there seems to be a strong underlying genetic or nature predisposition as to why we are able to perform like this." There is also the power of tradition - athletics has long had strong roots in Jamaica.

Arthur Wint won the 100 metres gold medal at the 1948 Games, the first the country had entered while still a British colony, and Herb McKenley won four medals from 1948 to 1952 and later Merlene Ottey enjoyed success throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

"I think it's a combination of factors," Jamaican athletics chief Howard Aris told Reuters."We have the tradition from way back, from 1948. We have the talent, we have the certified coaches. From the very early stages, they are taught the right things - how to eat, how to train, how to sprint."

Whatever may be pushing Jamaicans to run fast - it is certainly working in Beijing.

He did not slow down, or stretch his arms or slap his chest, this time. But he still won the 200m sprint in world record time, giving himself the best present on the eve of his 22nd birthday.

Maybe he did not want to take a chance till he crossed the 200m finish line yesterday. After all, it was the great Michael Johnson whose world record he was after, unlike the 100m in which he broke his own on Saturday.
