    2008-12-01 12:06:01

    Steven Jobs
    Apple Computer
    3-year return: 26%
    AGE: 42

Here's a guy with enough savvy and brainpower to effectively hold down two CEO jobs at once--and do a pretty amazing job at both. We've listed him for his post at Apple, but of course Steve Jobs also runs Pixar, the animation company. Jobs arrested Apple's slow death spiral and even put some oomph back into the pioneering computer firm he helped found. Coming in after a $1 billion loss in fiscal 1997, Jobs turned a $106 million profit--38 percent above Wall Street's consensus target. A lot of credit goes to a very simple idea: Make computers in different colors. Jobs was the only one who thought to make it happen. The colorful mid-priced iMac has also succeeded by playing down the compatibility conundrum. Apple positioned it as the machine for the Internet, where compatibility questions are no big deal. Behind the scenes, Jobs also streamlined the product line, reduced the head count, consolidated distribution, and slimmed inventory. Meanwhile, over at Pixar, A Bug's Life nabbed a total $159 million in domestic box office, the highest domestic animated take since Toy Story and third highest ever, after Toy Story and the leader, The Lion King.

Business philosophy: "The technology isn't the hard part. The hard part is, Who's going to buy it? How are they going to buy it? How do you tell them about it?"

Headaches: Multifold. Apple is still a pip-squeak to the Wintel Goliath. With less than 10 percent of the computer market, Apple needs to lure more software makers into producing programs for the Mac. The company has cut about as much as it can. Now it has a tougher job: Make sales grow. And what's the follow-up? Jobs probably also hasn't been spending as much as he should on research and development. Finally, where is his successor? Pixar, a collegial place, can run without him--but what about Apple? Not a good place for a boss who refuses to remove the "interim" prefix from his CEO title.

Management Style: At Apple, Jobs is a mercurial micromanager--some say nanomanager. Virtually every decision goes by him. "At any time, 10,000 employees are wondering, 'What would Steve say?,' not 'What is the right thing to do?'" said a former Apple exec. At Pixar, realizing that he isn't a film visionary, he leaves the experts to their knitting.

Habits: Known for casual dress, he cruises the office shoeless and in a sport shirt--but don't mistake him for laid-back. Snacks on granola doused with apple juice.

How he got the job: The Apple board begged him to return.

True story: Former Newton palmtop chief Sandy Benett told his underlings that the subsidiary would be folded back into Apple--before Jobs had made an official announcement. After the news leaked, Jobs fired Benett.

Financial reward: His Apple rewards are minimal--a salary of one dollar a year so that his family is eligible for the health plan. But his 69 percent share of Pixar is worth about $1.3 billion.

Some people think that passion and work are not supposed to mix. After all, we work to make a living, not to feed our souls, right?

She says your passion is part of your "core essence(精神内核)" - your talents, your gifts, and all of the things that make you who you are. Your passion is your life force or energy. "It's a part of you that you bring to everything you do," she adds.

But, your true passions never go away; sometimes, you just have to rediscover them.

Here are some of Miller's tips to help you discover - or rediscover - your passions and live the life you were meant to live.

      1. Reflect on your past

Miller says a great way to identify your real passions is to think about your life, especially your childhood, and identify things that you love. What has given you the most joy? What comes easily to you? Think about your favorite subjects in school or your favorite games as a child. If you loved playing with puppets or putting on plays, you might have a starved performer inside you waiting to get out. Once you identify your predilections (爱好), you can figure out how to utilize them. For example, the person who is yearning to perform can find opportunities at work for public speaking. "A lot of our passions are right there in front of us," Miller says.

      2. Identify your dreams (明确你的梦想).

If you want to uncover your passions, you need to identify your dreams. Make a list of things that you long to do, things you would do if you had nothing to lose. Miller says it is important to challenge your assumptions. Maybe your dream is to be a dancer on Broadway. Identifying this might not get you all the way to New York City, but it will point you in the right direction. Don't leave something off the list because you think it is not feasible. Sometimes just being willing to identify your dreams opens you up to something new.

      3. Look for opportunities to nurture your passions

Miller suggests picking up a course catalogue from a community college. Look through the classes offered and mark each that elicits a strong reaction in you. Give yourself the opportunity to follow these reactions. If you get a feeling about something, try it. If you are interested in the arts, take an art appreciation class. If you dream of being a photographer, take a photography course. Sing, dance, write - do whatever you feel drawn to. "You have to be willing to do some experimentation," she says.

      4. Build a world and lifestyle around your passions

Miller says that everyone needs to follow the things that motivate and inspire us. She uses the analogy of a seed. Each of us is born with an inner seed and this is where our passions lie. If this seed is deserted, never watered and deprived of sunlight, it will not grow. But, if it is planted in the right environment, it will bloom. Like that seed, you need to put yourself in the right environment. If you yearn to be creative, a conservative corporate environment might not be the best choice. "Look for a work environment that fosters who you really are," says Miller. Once you do, you will find that your passions are able to be expressed more freely, which will lead to more opportunities.

Learning how to live your passion takes time, exploration and the willingness to take chances. The important thing is to start now. "This life is not a dress rehearsal(彩排)," says Miller. "You need to put something in your life that gives you joy."

  • “Sorry” First

    2008-12-01 12:02:31

There is one word that is on the lips of Americans, day and night: “Sorry.”

One time as I was walking on the street, a young man ran by hurriedly, brushing against my handbag. Even as he continued on his way, he turned back and said “sorry” to me. Even in a rush, he didn’t forget to apologize. One day, after I bought a mango, the salesman was giving me the change, but I wasn’t ready for it and a coin dropped to the ground. “I’m sorry,” he said while bending down to pick it up. I was puzzled—why would he apologize when it is my fault?

Another time, I stepped on a man’s foot in an escalator, at the same time, we both said “sorry”. I thought it interesting, was it really necessary for him to apologize? Later on, an American friend explained to me that according to the American mentality, the escalators a public place, and everyone should be able to stand in it. After someone occupies a position in the elevator, making it difficult for someone else to find a place to stand, isn’t it necessary to express an apology?

If you go to the movies and the tickets happen to be sold out, the ticket seller will say: “Sorry, the tickets are sold out.” Whenever one of your hopes goes unfulfilled, an American will say “sorry” as a sign of sympathy.

During my stay in America, I often came across situations in which I was supposed to say “sorry”. Gradually, I realized that when friction occurs in daily life, Americans don’t care much about who is responsible; If someone is troubled, a “sorry” is always necessary. When this happens, even if the other person is hurt, the “sorry” cools tempers and human generosity is displayed. Perhaps this is why I never saw anyone quarreling on the buses, subways or streets of America.

    2008-12-01 11:59:11

Russian journalist Oleg Blotsky holds his book entitled "Vladimir Putin: Life Story" during a news conference in Moscow, January 21, 2002.

He is fearless, altruistic, steel-willed, hospitable, unbelievably hardy, unpretentious and warm -- and he has lost none of these qualities since becoming Russia's president.

It is a scrupulously unbiased snapshot of Vladimir Putin if you believe the author of the first volume of a Kremlin-backed trilogy on Putin's life, written in the unmistakable style the Soviets once reserved for Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin.

"I do not think it is a eulogy. I simply conveyed what people (who met Putin) said," Oleg Blotsky told a news conference on Monday as he posed for photos with his "Vladimir Putin".

The book, complete with a genealogical tree back to the beginning of the 18th century and a chapter dedicated to Putin's ancestors, spans from his birth to the start of his career as a KGB spy.

Putin contributed to the work with extensive interviews to Blotsky. The result is a selection of memories by Putin's friends and acquaintances who hold nothing but the warmest recollections of him. The only person in the book who does not heap praise on the president is Putin himself, who is characteristically humble.

Praise bestowed on the Kremlin leader ranges from young judoist Putin fighting "like a snow leopard" to many years later his being visibly moved when decorated war veterans in the Kremlin stood up in salute as he entered the hall.

  • How do I love thee

    2008-12-01 11:57:06

How do I love thee by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861)

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
    I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

  • Angels are Always There

    2008-12-01 11:53:51

    Surrounding you are angels,
They are there to guide your path,
    If weakness overcomes you,
They'll give you strength if you will ask.

    They are your protection
When life seems too hard to bear,
And though you feel alone at times,
The angels ... they are there.

    Their faces may be hidden
And their voices you might not hear,
But they are ALWAYS with you,
Through your laughter or your tears.

    They'll walk along beside you,
They'll guide your steps along the way,
They'll comfort you and hold you,
    Protect you night and day.

They'll hold to your hand tightly,
They'll not ever let it go,
And they'll gently lead you forward,
    Taking each step very slow.

    For even as you slumber,
    They watch closely over you;
    They are there beside you
In each and every thing you do.

    When life is overwhelming,
And your spirit has grown tired,
Know they'll be there for you,
    To uplift and to inspire.

And when you're torn and lonely,
And you see no hope ahead,
Know that they will nourish you,
    Your spirit will be fed.

And if there comes a time in life
That your heart has been broken,
Hear the words, "I'm here, my child,"
And know your angel has spoken.

For even in the darkest hour,
When all of hope seems gone,
They'll give you strength to live your life,
    And desire to go on.

And if your faith in Heaven,
    Should ever fade away,
    They'll help renew your spirit,
And help you find your way.

Even though you're ever filled with doubt,
    About the life you live,
Know that they are there to give you
    All that they can give.

For you see, the Father sent them,
Because to Him, you mean so much,
That He sent them "just for you," my friend,
And your life, they will touch.

    They will always be here,
    They will "never" leave your side;
And upon their strength and guidance,
    You always may rely.

    Take comfort in their guidance,
    Draw strength from up above,
And know that their sweet presence,
Is God's precious gift of love.

Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday expressed his 'deep condolences' over the death of a Chinese UN observer killed in an Israeli air raid on a UN post in south Lebanon.

President Hu "demanded the Chinese departments concerned properly handle the aftermath of the incident and take every measure necessary to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals in Lebanon," said the statement from Chinese Foreign Ministry.

单词aftermath指“the result following a bad event such as an accident or war”(由事故或战争而导致的结果),很确切地表达了汉语“余秧,余波”的内涵。

由此,“善后” 的相应英文表达就是“to properly handle the aftermath of the accident”。新闻中,由上下文,accident可用incident(空袭这一事件)来代替。

    2008-12-01 11:44:13

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.

      Write,for example,'the night is starry

and the stars are blue and shiver in the distance'.

The night wind revolves in the sky and sings.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.

I loved her,and sometimes she loved me too.

Through nights like this one I held her in my arms.

I kissed her again and again under the endless sky.

She loved me,sometimes I loved her too.

How could one not have loved her great still eyes.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.

To think that I do not have her.

To feel that I have lost her.

To hear the immense night, still more immense without her.

And the verse falls to the soul like dew to the pasture.

What does it matter that my love could not keep her,

the night is starry and she is not with me.

         This is all.

In the distance someone is singing. In the distance.

My soul is not satisfied that it has lost her.

My sight tries to find her as though to bring her closer.

My heart looks for her,and she is not with me.

The same night whitening the same trees.

We,of that time, are no longer the same.

I no longer love her, that's certain, but how I loved her.

My voice tried to find the wind to touch her hearing.

Another's.She will be another's.As she was before my kisses.

Her voice, her bright body. Her infinite eyes.

I no longer love her, that's certain, but maybe I love her.

Love is so short, forgetting is so long.

Because through nights like this one I held her in my arms

my soul is not satisfied that it has lost her.

Though this be the last pain that she makes me suffer

and these the last verses that I write for her.

        这就是一切了。

      远处有人在唱着歌。

      那么远。

      我的空虚因为没有她。

      我的目光搜寻她,想要把她拉近;

      我的心寻找她

      而她并没有和我在一起。

      相同的夜让相同的树木泛白。

      彼时,我们也不再相似如初。

      我不再爱她,这是确定的,但我曾多爱她。

      我的声音试着循风来抚摸她的听觉。

      别人的

      如同她曾接受的我的千吻,

      她的声音,她洁白的身体,她无尽的双眼,

      她将会是别人的。

      我不再爱她,这是确定的,但也许我还爱她。

      爱情太短,遗忘太长。

      借着如同今晚的夜,我曾拥她入怀

      我的灵魂因失去了她而失落。

      这是她最后一次让我承受的伤痛

      而这些,便是我为她而写的最后的诗句。

    Connection

It is snowing outside. I am a little depressed because of the chilly winter. Looking through the window I can see a mother and her daughter making a snowman. I am deeply moved by their laugh and happiness. It reminds me of my mother. What is my mother doing now? Is she missing her youngest daughter who lives far away from her? At this moment I miss my mum so much that I remember an unforgettable experience happened years ago. Does she still remember it?

When I was ten, there was not VCD or DVD in my village, so we kids were overjoyed when there would be a movie showed for the whole village. A movie was more attractive than candies and new clothes. Whenever and wherever it showed, I always made every effort to persuade my mum to let me go with my fellows. So when I knew there would be a wonderful movie at that snowing night, actively but unusually, I cleaned the dinning table. Then I begged my mum to let me go. She could not stop me. I can not remember what that movie was about but I exactly remember my strong will to watch it. She asked me to put on her woolen scarf and gloves. Wearing like a penguin, I went to watch the movie. After the movie, my neighbor’s girl suggested that we continue to watch TV in her house. As kids, we always loved doing things together, even having meals. So I agreed without hesitate. I took it for granted that my mum knew where l went and I thought she would not worry about me, therefore I didn’t tell her. I will never forget the moment when I saw my mum in our yard calling my name, with tears on her face. She has looked for me from door to door of every friend of mine. She has run in the snow for nearly two hours, looking for her selfish daughter. Smiling, with tears she looked like a kid when she saw me. She hugged me tightly without blame. From then on, I believe there is a connection between mother and her kids. For that snowing night I felt I really heard my mother’s call.

It is still snowing. The mother and her daughter have finished their snowman. They have left, leaving a beautiful snowman with black eyes and red nose. I determine to make a snowman just like this with my mum this winter vacation. Suddenly I am sure my mum is missing me now, for the mysterious connection. I am so eager to phone my mum that I quicken my pace…

    Autumn Days

Came along the fall, it’s a sense of chill, abandoned leaves,

      that glory of gold turned pale;

Fall’s breeze, it’s a sense of direction, helpless leaves,

that splendor of green faded away.

Came along the fall, hint of forever wait,

      that empty soul trembled in a poor breakable shell;

Fall’s breeze, sign of heavenly pray,

that desperation dripped out of a solitary life.

    Heartful mercy, faithful bless, vanished all;

      Glorious harvest, sole destiny,autumn days

-- with a sincere respect to this amazing season

    肖邦之秋

      秋天来了,些许寒意,伴随几片落叶,落下的是几分潇洒;

      秋风吹过,何去何从,瞬间带走落叶,不见的是几丝绿意。

    秋天来了,茫然的空白,久违的等待,任意找一个角落,

      钻进冬眠的贝壳,让自己蜷缩起来;

    秋风吹过,感激的默哀,心底的无奈,冰雪般寒冷的贝壳,

      发呆的表情在颤抖,为生命轮回倒数。

    秋天真的来了,带走了美丽,带来了什么,或许你可以告诉我;

      秋天成熟,所以写满了收获;秋天虚伪,所以到处是无情。

      默默的祈祷,倒数,为了那份美丽,幻化自己。

    值不值得

    我们总是处在决定和选择之中,决定一件事情是否该做,是否值得做;选择我们认为重要的,放弃我们认为不重要的。而这个过程往往是艰难的,痛苦的,我们会反复地衡量得与失,理性地分析对与错。也许只有当我们静心独处,仔细倾听内心的声音的时候,才能做出一个不后悔的选择。

Horror gripped the heart of the World War I soldier as he saw his lifelong friend fall in battle. Caught in a trench with continuous gunfire whizzing over his head, the soldier asked his lieutenant if he might go out into the "No Man’s Land" between the trenches to bring his fallen comrade back.

"You can go," said the Lieutenant, "but I don’t think it will be worth it. Your friend is probably dead and you may throw your own life away." The Lieutenant’s words didn’t matter, and the soldier went anyway.

Miraculously he managed to reach his friend, hoisted him onto his shoulder, and brought him back to their company’s trench. As the two of them tumbled in together to the bottom of the trench, the officer checked the wounded soldier, then looked kindly at his friend. "I told you it wouldn’t be worth it," he said. "Your friend is dead, and you are mortally wounded."

"It was worth it, though, sir," the soldier said.

"How do you mean ‘worth it’?" responded the Lieutenant. "Your friend is dead!"

"Yes sir," the private answered. "But it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive, and I had the satisfaction of hearing him say, ‘Jim, I knew you’d come.’"

Many a time in life, whether a thing is worth doing or not really depends on how you look at it.

Take up all your courage and do something your heart tells you to do so that you may not regret not doing it later in life.

John was waiting for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t, the girl with the rose. Thirteen months ago, in a Florida library he took a book off the shelf and found himself intrigued with the notes in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind.

In front of the book, he discovered the previous owner’s name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he located her address. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond.

During the next year and one-month the two grew to know each other through the mail. A Romance was budding. John requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like. Later they scheduled their first meeting-7:00 pm at Grand Central Station in New York.

"You'll recognize me, " she wrote, "by the red rose I'll be wearing on my lapel." So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for the girl with the red rose.

A young woman in a green suit was coming toward him, her figure long and slim and her eyes were blue as flowers. Almost uncontrollably he made one step closer to her, and just at this moment he saw Hollis Maynell-a woman well past 40. The girl was walking quickly away. He felt as though he split in two, so keen was his desire to follow her, and yet so deep was his longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned him and upheld his own.

He did not hesitate. He squared his shoulders and said, "I’m John, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner?"

The woman smiled, "I don’t know what this is about, son," she answered, "but the young lady in the green suit begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should tell you that she is waiting for you in the restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!"

It’s not difficult to admire Miss Maynell’s wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in it's response to the unattractive.

"You are the only one who can make you happy." We have all heard that so many times in our lives.

There are times it is a pretty tough pill to swallow. In reality, the people that surround you have a huge impact on your current mood. When your children are grumpy in the morning, you find a nice pile the dog left you over night, you hit the road and the traffic won't allow you your normal speed, then when you get to work and your co-worker called in sick... these are all things that might contribute to your overall Happiness of the day.

However, moods and temporary emotions are not the same as happiness. Happiness exists when you look at the overall picture of your life and you smile, that is happiness. You know those times when you can't wait for your children to go to bed, then later you check on the kids and you almost cry because they look exactly like angels... YOUR ANGELS, sleeping so sweetly and soundly. You can hardly remember a time of irritation with them. That is Happiness.

As life progresses and changes, we realize that who we are, (what makes us, us)... that is what we are responsible for. We know that immediate gratification or irritation only pacifies or deteriorates our emotional stimuli short term. Our global view of how we see ourselves determines our state of mind. Our state of mind determines our Happiness.

So, how do we take control of our emotions and find the path of Happiness? This seems to be the million dollar question. There are tons of books on or related to the subject. You could read and practice until you are completely confused. Or, we could spend the rest of our life introspectively evaluating what makes us happy. Which might take more time and energy and actually frustrate us more.

How about this? What if we looked at ourselves and decided what we liked and didn't like and set about making changes. It doesn't have to be major alterations. Maybe you are tired of your house but can't afford to move. Try painting the living room or buying flowers to set on the kitchen table. If you haven't had a vacation for awhile and just can't afford to take that cruise, go camping instead.

Maybe the issues are more personal or internal. Do you get mad too easily? Learn yoga or meditation. Are you having marital problems? Visit a counselor. Are the kids having discipline issues? Determine the major issues, establish guidelines on how you are going to correct the problem and stick to it.

You may be saying, 'Sure, that sounds so easy but...' Of course it sounds easy. Problems are always easier to talk about than to take the obvious actions to fix them. But, for the most part, things are as difficult or as easy as we determine them to be. Sometimes we just make things harder than necessary.

If your unHappiness stems from a situation beyond your control then find other ways to compensate. If, for example, money is so tight and no apparent windfall is coming your way any time soon, find inexpensive entertainment. Backyard ballgames, picnics in the park, movie night with popcorn and snacks in your bedroom are a few alternatives to an expensive night out. If the issues are more serious and you feel powerless, that is the time to seek professional help.

Otherwise, look in the mirror and be glad. If you don't like what you see, change it. Make the solution that simple!

  • The Many Faces of Love

    2008-11-30 14:23:05

    The Many Faces of Love

Love.. what is love? A lot of people shared their views to what Love really is, or at least what Love is in their eyes. Perhaps love is just an illusion. A strong illusion, especially for those who are searching for a purpose of life. Is love an answer? Love can be wonderful, special, complicated, a distress, a gift, a curse, a tragedy, and most of all, an experience.

Love is a mysterious and a complicated force. What do a person mean when they say they love someone? Love is many different things. Each of us have our own understanding of Love is, and most of the time we base our definitions from feelings and experiences. The book defines love in many ways. "It is a strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties." It can be an affection and tenderness felt by lovers. Love is the object of attachment, devotion, or admiration.

Just when we thought we finally grasp what love is, somebody asks:

"Does anyone really know what 'LOVE' mean? I believe I have a true love, but 'True love' is always hurt, isn't it?"

I scratches my head with this thought and began to wonder. What is the answer to this? "This I have to know!" I said to myself. I looked in the mirror and asked "Is it a true love when you know you want to live with this special person for the rest of your life? Have we reached 'true love' when we are ready to give everything away towards our subject? Or maybe when can go as far as to sacrifice ourselves for our love? What about love as an obsession? Is that possible?

"But isn't love suppose to be an obsession? If it is not, then you'd have to rationalize. If you rationalize then it's not love, because there is always a better rationalization."

"I think the "in love" phase is obsessive but according to Williamson (and backed up by my paltry experience), love does not involve the ego, is selfless and the opposite of obsession."

According to Marriane Williamson, the author of "A Return to Love," there is a "holy love" and a "special love." "The latter type is the obsessiveone; finding that one 'special' person absorbs _ALL_ your attention."

So who is right and who is wrong about love? There is no wrong answer. Love is many wonderful things. Love may not work out all the time but it leaves you a special sort of feeling, like nothing you have ever imagined. Is love a purpose of life? I think are life will be dull without it. But is it necessary? Important? It is a part of life, and forever it will be a part of us.

"Love is not thinking about your happiness but making others happy." -anonymous

"Our hearts are created to Love." -E. Atienza

"Love is like a roller coaster, it has ups and downs."

"Love doesn't make the world go around, Love makes the ride worth while." -unknown

"Money will buy you sex but not Love." -Simon Vainrub

"The more you cry for the person you really love, the more you can understand real love." -Tsuchida Tomomi

I want nothing but the best for you,
and that's why I want you
to always have me in your life...

      Wanting the best for you
means wanting you to always have
a friend you can count on,

      a love you can celebrate,
arms you can come home to,
and a life that feels fulfilled.

      Wanting the best for you
      makes me wish that
you'll always want me in your life,
because nobody will love you like I will.

      Nobody will try as hard
to give you what you need
      and what you wish for,
      and nobody could feel
      as happy as I am
      or as privileged
      or as hopeful.

I want the best for you...
      and that includes me.
      Not because I'm perfect...
      but just because
I'm perfectly in love with you.
